I really like gentle too but some people hated him tho because he was more goofy and not like overhaul or muscular but he had his own value. Gentle plays a great role in representing the issues of my hero society which is probably one of the most relevant themes. It showed that not everyone becomes a deku trying to be a hero. Just like how not everyone has the right quirk to be like deku with the shinso stuff. In gentle case he had a quirk for it and sometimes it still doesn't work out.

No cap, I had the same impression you did when this show first dropped. A quirkless MC who fakes it till he makes it and proves that you don’t need a quirk to be a hero. There could even be a sub plot where he gets excepted into UA and has to hide the fact that he has no powers but still try’s to pass his courses without getting caught. Maybe even some of his classmates/ teachers get suspicious of him? So much wasted potential.

You realize it’s not one sided right? Bakugo kept bullying Deku yeah, but you wanna know something that the series told you many times? He kept trying to get rid of Deku and just go away from him. But Deku kept going after him because he knew Bakugo was his true friend. Even Bakugo didn’t want Deku to apply for U.A, and Deku himself says reasons why he kept chasing after him. Bakugo felt that Deku had better qualities as a hero than he did, it was much more than a “oh he got upset because he helped him when he fell” thing. I enjoy watching the villains, but you're right about how simple they are, and dang they need some therapy. It makes me mad how he writes their backstories. I was all for the idea of a grey morality where the villains were partly in the right because there ARE problems with the hero society. For the Todoroki's, I feel Endeavor should've just been an unredeemable son of a bitch if they wanted this story to work. Dabi would be justified in trying to stop him. Shoto would have a reason to dislike him. It would've even furthered the idea how the hero society is terrible because of all of the abuse going on in the shadows and it being covered up by the media. But no... I guess we NEEDED to redeem Endeavor and make him sympathetic. Dabi is my favorite character and I've always enjoyed watching him. I don't let the backstory ruin him for me, but it should've been done better. I'm trying to be a writer and I often use these characters in stories I write for fun, so criticism videos like this really teach me a lot. I appreciate it.

Dabi's actions against Enii would be completely justified if Hori made Enji an actual terrible person. The whole "heroes aren't as good as we believe" plot is completely wasted because no hero is actually shown to be that bad.

@@dabiyuino123 The main theme of MHA is that tokenism is bad (All Might being the symbol of peace) and that everybody in a society needs to pitch in for it to flourish. Endeavor's redemption is essential to that theme because he was the only one who tried his hardest when All Might was getting all the praise. Narratively, you can't go from 0% to 100%, but Endeavor's presence makes the transition of showing this theme easier.

Yes, yes yes yes! FINALLY! Someone else who konws Endeavor SHOULDN'T have been redeemed! God I HATE what the author did with him. My headcanon is the author retcon Endeavor's character after All Might completly lost AFO. Because when he's first introduce, we're told Endeavor BOUGHT his wife just to have a kid to surpass All Might, ignored his kids who were "weak", physically and mentally abused his wife and child to the point his wife had a mental episode, bruned her child and has been in the hospital for TEN YEARS! Oh but he's SoRrY! He's TrYiNg to do better! Give me a break! In the real world, child abusers are NEVER shown simpathy, hell even in prison they're frowned upon.

@@dabiyuino123 But Dabi's backstory doesn't negate Endeavor being a terrible person. Endeavor's journey to improvement does not negate the fact that he was a terrible person in the past. That's what Dabi's existence is all about. Dabi's backstory, even with the knowledge that Endeavor was trying to keep Dabi away from training does not make him a good guy all of a sudden. He instilled his dreams and ambitions in a young child, and once Dabi was no longer useful to him, he cut the cord and abruptly told him to stop. Couple that with Dabi being smart enough to realize that Fuyumi, Natsuo, and Shoto were all attempts to replace him. Enji is a complex man, like many people in real life. He may not have been a drooling savage beating his knuckles into Dabi, but it's still abuse. That's what those chapters were about.

I have some problems with MHA. 1. They don't show other quirkless people (anime only i don't know anything about the manga) , they just show deku and no one elss. i want to see how the other quirkless people deal whit discrimination and bulling and are they part of the leauge of villans. 2. The villans from s1 to s3 maybe s4 without overhaul are basically delinquents. Shigaraki hates deku and has kurogiri a man who can teleport to almost anywhere he wants and he dosen't try to kidnap deku's mom or atleast try to scare him with it. 3. To many fucking students in class 1A. They should've made a class S where only characters like todoroki, bakugo, tokoyami, deku and even momo cuz the quirk itself isn't the problem she as a character is. Some people from class 1B are good enough to join: Ibara Shiozaki, Kodai Yui, Honenuki Juzo.

So i wanted to see how they deal with bullyng and discrimination because there should be some qurkless children like deku (i dont know if this is canon) Melissa Shield the daughter of David Shield he creats suport items for heros and she is quirkless so there shold be some younger peolpe who dont have a quirk. Deku and Melissa are a very rare occurrence where they are born without a quirk in their generation of children. That’s why you might not ever see any other quirkless people. I agree with your 2nd and 3rd points.

It wasn't shown in the anime (doesnt exactly mean it didnt exist in the anime's continuity), but there was a racist "cult" of people who would discriminate against heteromorphic type quirk users, such as Spinner from the league, who also mentions that he was discriminated against. They were basically the MHA version of the KKK.

To be honest, initially I didn’t by anything you were saying but it may me reconsider. However, I can’t deny that there are a lot of things Horikoshi missed out on. The series feels incredibly rushed now, and he started exploring other characters like Uraraka, Tenya and Kirishima in later parts then that climaxed. There was so much potential but the pacing in the manga just keeps getting faster and faster. Sure it’s still good in my eyes but it could of been significantly better.

I disagree with some points (like, I still don't think every good villain needs justified motives) but this video really hits the nail on the head overall. Like why do they keep relying on the kids for shit? I'm the war arc they legit single Kaminari out for his powers despite we knowing his power is actually super common! Why does the school keep letting Deku do whatever he wants? Why did Hori make Deku so busted only try and convince us Bakugou is still on his level? Why is there never any pay off to the things he sets up? Why is the worldbuilding so ass? Why do All Might and Deku never address the blatant corruption around them? Why is Shoto Todoroki so boring? And so on and so forth.

@@TheYoungGeninSasuke While emotionless characters aren't usually my cup of tea. I know it can be done well. When I say Shoto is boring. I mean that despite what all the marketing and his excessive screentime may imply... He's pretty much a side character in all facets. He's the third wheel in the central rivalry (Deku & Bakugou) and hasn't even really contributed to their development since season two. And this goes for most of his scenes with the class. While it's a complaint of many scenes and many characters, I find it pretty common for Shoto to often get some lines in but hardly ever say anything of any value or weight. Or anything that really informs you of his character in a meaningful way. Even his own subplot, he's slightly more complex there, but is secondary to his dad in terms of narrative focus, character development, and agency. Hell, even Dabi is a more major player. While I'm certain Shoto will be the one to defeat Dabi, in the journey there, it never felt like a feud between them. It felt more like a feud between Endeavor and Dabi. They're the more flawed characters that move the plot along. When he does sometimes cut loose or lose his temper, it feels more jarring than striking. He isn't a terrible character. And honestly the way he is kinda makes sense. It just doesn't make for the most entertaining watch. For me, he's just kinda meh. He isn't as good a rival to Deku as Bakugou. And he isn't as charming a friend as Iida or Ochako. And I kinda wish the series would just admit he's a side character instead of trying to force him into the role of third lead.

I think the series has no world-building than bad world-building, to be honest since for a series that has over 80% of people with quirks whether it's Japan or the world, the fact that when it comes to people from the side justice/authority only the heroes have quirks, cops, marines, army veteran, Public Security Intelligence Agency japan's FBI, hell the only thing we saw was a firefighter who had a quirk, but besides that, we ain't get shit. If Hori wasn't a shitty writer then the hero side wouldn't be so low cause anyone from those eg can also be considered a hero.

My biggest problem is that most of the characters or situations aren’t realistic for example I think it was dabi or one of the villains saying hero’s are bad or some shit because they saw hawks kill twice like bruh 😑 villians are over here killing civilians what do you expect, you want him to let him go and kill more people or destroy the whole damn city or more. This is why I like Hawks and Gran Torino because they’re more realistic compared to the others, when Gran Torino was in the hospital and gave deku his scarf/cape he said he should’ve killed the villain (don’t remember who though) and ends up telling deku it’s not wrong to kill. Meanwhile everyone else is like “you killed a villain so you’re bad even tho your protecting us and risking your life like what. Then don’t get me started on the dabi situation like he’s cool and all but cmon that’s such a stupid reason to become a fucking villain “my dad tried stoping me from hurting myself and practicing my quirk in a unsafe way with no one around” I do believe endeavor and his mom could’ve helped him by saying we’ll help you train your quirk to be a hero but let’s first start with basics or get you gear since you’ll hurt yourself if you don’t,and since I’m basically rich being the number #2 hero I could afford it then you can train with shoto and help each other out. Hell all you had to do was give him attention and be proud of his motivation since even though he hurts himself he still wants to be a hero or something. Then I think it was bakugo or someone and his ass was getting mad since all might gave deku all of one like bruh he’s quirkless to began with and at least be happy you know the number 1 hero of Japan like bruh what else do you want.

I think the fundamental issue with MHA is that the society is set up in an inherently wrong way, and all the protagonists are trying to keep the status quo rather than actually change society for the better. It would have been more interesting if the students came to realise what was wrong with society and helped change it in a good productive way, whereas the villain's went about changing society in a destructive way. Really my issue is with the idea of inherently labelling criminals and law enforcement something as weighty as villains and heroes.

The problem with deku as a protagonist is that he's already a hero. From the very beginning he embodies everything that it means to be a hero. But that's incredibly boring for a protagonist as there's absolutely no room for him to grow. It would have been fine if he didn't have powers but he kept his heroic spirit, but since they gave him the powers too his room for development went down the drain pretty quickly. He became a static boring character that barely changed, and was barely challenged (value wise)

A large theme with the Villain, the Vigilantes comic, and even a bit in the Stain arc is that superheroes ignore societal issues and allow systemic issues to persist. Another theme is the story is people passing the torch to new generations. I bet you none of these things will be properly addressed and Deku is going to continue to defend the corrupt status quo.

It’s also somewhat self centered of deku. With Naruto as a example, his goals were selfish at the start but as the series progresses it’s challenged both physically mentally and reinforced when he meets others that showed how he could’ve turned out. But with deku as you said no growth but to add to it he never questions it or weavers despite never actually doing anything about at the start or seeing the corruption of hero society and we’re not given a reason why, no I have to fix something (ei show Quirkless are treated or How the hero commission works) or i want to be accepted, just I want to be a hero that’s it. If he does succeed nothing actually is done, the hero commission is still in power Quirkless are still oppressed and no signs he will be better than all might.

The best villain in My Hero Academia is easily Gentle Criminal because he has good backstory with logical and relatable motivation. Here is someone who wanted to be a Hero, was a constant screw up who got ignored, and decided to become a villain in order to actually stand out. Yes he is played for laughs and was never a real threat, but at least his motives made sense and his relationship with La Brava was one of the sweetest moments in the series.

If only deku had a quirk named "Quirkless". Which made deku on par with the enemies duribility and strength. No ability but it just scales with whoever he ends up touching meaning he even gets the other persons immunities to their owns abilities but its a passive ability meaning unlike everyone else it doesn't even need to be triggered and it can't be seen like the visual quirk characters that can be identified like Tokoyami. Legit all it does is even the plane field. But I don't know if that is a good idea.

I mean, Dabi's backstory was a retcon. Rei was bought, remember? She was abused until she couldn't bare the sight of Shouto because of how much his fire side resembled Endevour and Endevour abused his kids, especially Touya and Shouto, because he was obsessed with creating the perfect successor to beat All Might. Horikoshi has a problem with wanting to rdeem awful characters like Bakuhoe and Endevour, but not wanting to actually put in any effort, so he retcons things to make it seem like they weren't as bad as he'd initially written them in order to make their redemptions easier.

I had a gut feeling when My Hero first came out that, despite everyone getting on the hype train, I wasn't interested in it. I grew up watching so many superhero shows like Justice League (and Ultimate), Spectacular Spider-Man, X-Men Evolution, Teen Titans, Batman the Animated Series, to even recent ones like Young Justice and Invincible. So I thought this was gonna be another "students going to school, learning how to be heroes, growing their powers and making friends along the way!" And while, yes, the sports festival was probably the only arc I saw, but even then I didn't see all of it. I didn't feel this show had much to offer.

I had the exact same premonition and wasted my time watching every single episode anyway. The author puts enough excitement in the show to keep you incentivized but betrays that excitement with excessive build up and horrific pacing. You spend every arc waiting for something to happen. I tried to give it a chance but I guess I should have listened to my quirk known as "clairvoyance". I'm not even in the show and I'm already more interesting than all of the characters.

@@kain7513 So true. I'll admit, I think the only version I COULD have given a chance is if Bakugo was the main character. The reason I believe for Bakugo's popularity is because he is a redemmed "villain" and for most animes those are usual fan favorites (Vegeta/Piccolo, Sasuke and Zuko (I don't he's not from a anime)). It's a storyline that's (I don't think) never been tackled and I would love to see it. Most Shounen protagonist are almost all the same: loud, wanting to be the best, cries a lot, bullied at the start/looked down on, always smiling and have a powerful speech for every big fight, and Midoriya is no exception. I just found his character didn't bring anything new so following his path to be a hero was boring and predictable. I will say had he been quirkless, that would be another story.

Quirkless Midoriya is just too cerebral of an avenue for for shonen's typical audience. Instead they just regurgitate the same archetypes and fool younger generations into thinking they're getting something new. Also aren't you tired of watching female characters get trash roles in shonen manga? According to them no women can have good ideas or be of any real use.

Yet another thing that vigilantes did better. The toughest character out of the "main trio" in vigilantes, Knuckleduster, is quirkless. He's not even a big gadget guy- the instances where he does use equipment, it's realistic to modern day stuff (explosives, sniper rifles, a cobbled-together defibrillator, etc.). I also think Knuckleduster does a better job of taking advantage of folks' quirks than Deku does.

One of the biggest things that always pissed me off when they came to My Hero is that we’re supposed to believe that Deku is the underdog of the show, only to get the most op quirk ever. Now the thing that threw me overboard to where I stopped watching the show all together, is how it seems like everyone is always riding Deku’s dick, even the villains love him. I actually have a nickname for the show literally called “Deku Dicksuck” for how much it happens. My Hero Academia suffers from many things, uninteresting/ underdeveloped characters, terrible world building, plot armor up the ass, a very toxic and weird fanbase that's up there for the worst, boring villans, predictable/boring shonen protagonist, and terrible writing. Although I still think it's decent, *some* charachters like Mirio, Tokoyami, Neito, All Might, and probably 2 more keep me interested in the show, I like the interactions and expressions between most of the characters and there are many funny moments, the fights are visually beautiful, and it really did have potential but the writing is this show's biggest flaw.

making arcs ad character development redundant is something I noticed with some long running manga series. Especially that "vigilante arc" that brought us nothing. Keep in mind manga authors are mostly "amateurs" Horikoshi did 2 little series before my hero and they got cancelled due to writing. My heros writing isnt great but it got popular because of likable merchandisbale characters, superhero marvel movie crazy trend and obviousky also: great artwork. But his writing? Didnt improve. He got his ass sitting everyweek to come up with a new chapter . Shits stressful I doubt he had the time to imorove his writing nor did someone pount out to him he needs to improve because at that time the series was running good in the popukarity rankings. One thing i hate most is writing that makes 100 chapters or so useless or non existent. Take for example any cliched harem manga where the main quirk is being interrupted before getting the chance to confess. Cheap tacfics to extend the mangas lifespan. Or the biggest example Dragonball super. Dbz turned into a franchise and since there is a 10 year gap between dbz and the final chapter they made shit up what happened in that time. Everything in super is out of control. The powerlevels, the introduction of gods and universes and making old villains like boo freezer and cell which wer supposed to be strongest and the finals arcs of the story absolutely useless and not as impactful anymore. Yoy are telling me? that durings gokus whole story up until he was 50 60 years old at the end of the story all that development all that strength and battle experience is NOTGING compared to 1 year of Dragonball super arcs with overpowered villains and made up power ups? Ssj 1 2 and 3 were obvious asspulls but 3 times is enough. It had its charme but now there are 4 new power ups introduced in two years and mastered? aw hell nahh Current goku and villains make Namek freezer look like a fucking ant. And he was at the time one of the strobgest and most feared beings in dbz and that didnt change untik the end. Cell was newly created. And boo was sealed. Who are these Super villains?

The point of the students participating in the war arc was to only evacuate the citizens while the hero’s take down the villains they only got involved because deku and Bakugo got involved. They were also getting sent into the field since they were technically hero’s since they had provisional licenses and it was to prepare them for the future since all might was no longer around. I stopped reading and watching early into the second saga but as I recall the scenario. Rei was the one who was actually abusive because she was the one who attacked Shoto. Even if there's more too it, it shouldn't've taken the author so long to develop the situation when he could've done that when it was most relevant to Shoto's arc. However I disagree with the "the only league of villain that actually has a good reason to become a villain is spinner" thing. The theme with most of those villains is that they're people society has failed. It actually makes a lot of sense and is one of the best written parts of the story once you give it some thought, however I'd agree that it took way too long for those characters to be developed into something interesting. I feel like if you can only sympathize with Spinner specifically than that's just a personal thing with not being able to relate how more people in different conditions could be raised to hate society other than muh racism.

Deku leaving was the best situation for him to become his own character, to buck up & become serious. But then he goes back... which outlines the issue with the entire plot. _Regression, constant status quo resets, no development. No STAKES, NO CONSEQUENCES._ *The same reason why No Way Home worked as a Spider-man film when the previous 2 movies failed,* is the same reason why My Hero is a garbage anime when it comes to Superheroes: ~ Lack of stakes & consequences That's the issue with this trash story as a project in it's entirety. The best time to change that would've been in multiple instances: ~ After a near death encounter (pick one) Deku gets serious, and tells Bakugou to fuck off, completely resetting their dynamic ~ Giving Mirio One for All, or at least sharing it ~ Killing All Might & AFO in the AFO fight ~ Deku staying solo Horikoshi has had chance after chance to do things different, but everytime he's got a chance to do something meaningful he goes back to that fucking school. Hence the name. Reset Status quo, back to classes, festivals and first world bullshit. Just watch Spider-Man cartoons or Teen Titans 2003 if you want Teen heroes getting shit done, MHA is just superpowered cosplayers being conditioned by Corporate powers to be glorified Superhuman employees, no independence, everyone's classified under an agency, everyone's categorized. Boku NO Heroes, just Superhuman Law Enforcement.

For me I’m catching up to the manga atm (and I’m like 8 chapters away from the most recent) but my main problem with the most recent installations is the damn pacing. It is so rushed that a lot of shit just either doesn’t make sense or it holds no emotional weight. Although the series is getting worse I still enjoy it for what it is tho

It's cathartic to hear someone voice many of my frustrations like this. I don't agree with everything, but a lot. I do what to push back a bit on the comment about Stain being a good villain though. His motivation to expose false heroes is great, but it's executed terribly. We're introduced to him paralyzing Ida's brother, who has never been shown to be anything but an ideal hero. I've heard push back on this that Stain targeted him because the Ida family got rich being heroes. First off, the show and manga barely even mentions the family's wealth. Second, they don't show that they got the money from being heroes or where that money comes from. And third, don't illustrate how that makes them worse or corrupts heroes. We then see Stain go after Native, yet we never see why. We're told that crime rates drop in cities where Stain kills heroes, yet those correlations are never logically connected with an explanation. At the time we see some heroes using their status for modeling careers, and there could be some commentary about not being a true hero there, but at best it's a hero slacking off on hero work. All the while there are way more interesting issues like how you're not allowed to use your quirks unless you're a licensed hero, making quirks legally treated as weapons instead of tools. That's f'ed up, and briefly touched on by the Meta Liberation Army. Yet even there the argument seems to be that people should be allowed to freely fight with their quirks. And don't get me started on the nonsense of the MLA. The logistics alone are gibberish. Horikoshi should have instead framed that entire ideology more similar to how republicans in America are a batch of whack job fanatics who can come together under an ideology and storm the capital, instead of some secret underground army that no one outside of it knows about. God, I could rant for hours. Better stop now.

Another thing that bugged me: where the hell were the 2nd years and the 3rd years during the war? Why are the 1st years only present? Horikoshi said in chapter 254 that he wanted to introduce 2A, and the war arc was a perfect opportunity to do so. But I guess he forgot that. 😑

After around 4 years i read this manga, now i realize how hard this series fell down recently... In my opinion, the series starts going downhill after Horikoshi have no idea what upgrades he’ll give to Deku, until he decided to turn him into Avatar... and even more, this All for One vs One for All shenanigans takes forever to complete, so the fans thirsty for some new fresh antagonist... i meam the ACTUAL antagonist, not like those pber the top league of villains. I hate how Horikoshi is trying to redeem EVERY SINGLE VILLAIN by gave them sad backstory or mental disease, just so the heroes can get a life lesson from it... NOOO, being a hero means you shpuld be protecting and saving as many people as possible, but in reality heroes should know best that not everyone deserves saving... Some people just deserve the worst hell imaginable, and heroes with its power and authority, unfortunately are the only eligible to commit this huge sin... I hate seeing villain defeated peacefully, i want them to die in agony, in regret, burming with revenge and pain... Of course, not all villain should end like that.Im not a sadist, but please make some place for the redeemeable villain and the ones who not, them give them the proper ends..

I don't have a problem with Endeavor as I feel he's really one of the few main characters who's story is interesting, to me at least, but the fact that so many awesome and underrated characters got side lined is bullshit. The UA teachers, other than Aizawa and maybe Present Mic, all got nothing. The 9th ranked pro Yoroi Musha got nothing. I thought that once the war arc came these guys would finally get to shine, to get arcs of their own, but no, we only see them through passing or brief mention.
