My rant on why modelers are the biggest babies and why it's so harmful to our hobby.

I went to my local IPMS once last year to see about joining. At least 3-4 people berated me for using Vallejo paints telling me that their garbage and that I need to switch brands, me saying that I'd successfully used them for close to 20yrs didn't mean anything to them, they were right and I was wrong with no room for personal preference. Despite being a Vallejo fan I won't use their primer anymore as I've had multiple projects go wrong with it, while I might share my feelings with someone else I wouldn't tell them their wrong for liking it. Also when I first bought my H&S Evolution I had constant issues with tip dry, when I asked online for advice I received nothing but replies telling me to switch to solvents as acrylics are useless, even thought I'd explained that I had many years experience successfully using acrylics with Badger airbrushes. .

Same here, my go to primer is Mr Surfacer by GSI Creos. After that, anything goes- Vallejo, AK lacquer, GSI -both Mr Color and Mr Hobby. I can't stand modellers that berate others for their choices. Whatever works for you is fine.

This is the same thing that happened to me when I first started attending IPMS meetings. I would get berated on the supplies I was using. Mind you I was young and in college. So I didn't have much money for modeling. It killed any desire to go to IPMS meetings in the future.

man I know what you mean. I have not sprayed a solvent in over 25 years. I have tried your recommendations as well barbatos rex. I have been spraying since I was 15 yrs old and I am going to be 62 and I acrylics all the time. At most I will use some tamiya lacquor thinner or gunze mr leveler. Now I have a dedicated hobby room. I have heard the pissing and moaning for 30+ years. People come to there own realization in there own time

OH MY GOD! YOU ARE MY HERO!! This has been pissing we off for years. Paint in particular, people can be so adamant that their way is the right way. I use acrylics (I'm happy with them, and share living space with family members- they perfect for me). Guess what? I back flush me airbrush too. Gee, we must be so stupid. It is because of these attitudes I stopped showing my work to people (and the rivet counters and the xolour shade police 😂😂😂 ). Now living on an island 850km of east coat of New Zealand where I believe I am the only modeller (600 people on island) and am enjoying modelling and being able to use the shades of paint that look right/good to ME. Loving it.

Glad you liked the rant, haha. Funny thing is, since I made this video. Another modeler on Facebook has attacked my posts about acrylics. I had to call him out and his attitude was "acrylics sucks" and you are wrong. I am half-way tempted to move to an island like you have....just so I can do some modeling in peace haha.

Don't come back! They are all waiting for you in South Island. The models that you are painting in The Chathams are all wrong because of the purity of the light and the fact that you are eating too many crayfish salads. It is a well-known fact that acrylics do not work on an Island because you are surrounded by sea spray.

Couldn't agree more. My own personal annoyance with other modelers is when you ask a simple question and you get the "have you tried google?". Yes i have but either the answers there were unclear or contradictory, or my google foo was just lacking when I looked.

Yea, I hate that as well. The person is asking for help…just help them. Someone learn better from one on one. No need to be a dick.

It’s all about creating a sense of inadequacy in the intended recipient. Two examples-manufacturers of aftermarket products who make the claim that their replacement item is so much more accurate than the kit parts. And with individual modellers who like to berate others for their choices it is a case of “my dick is bigger than yours “ Half the time these people never build anything. I don’t have time for either.

The funny thing is, I just got into a conversation with him this past Sunday about the same topic. He responded to my post to another modeler who was considering switching to acrylics. He started with the same mindset that you can’t do anything with acrylics. I explained to him the two issues he has pointed out I can demonstrate (and do demonstrate in my videos) are fixed. But no that is not enough. I finally gave up responding to the post.

Something im really getting sick of hearing is You arent using decals are you? Real modellers use stencils and masks to paint the markings on

Yeah, me to. I don't have time to paint every damn marking. I just want to finish a model.

Nigels Modelling World is the worst. Only 7 rivets instead of 8. Nose tapers 42 degrees instead of 41.5. Seatbelts missing an extra buckle. Trashes the kit then drinks a can of Bud Light. Mind you he never finishes a model.

I personally don't get people who are so hyper focused on every detail must be exact.....it's a model. It will never be exact.

@@arewethereyetmodeling2196 I want a good looking model. I want to enjoy the process and learn through the process. I look for 5 things on a finished plane I'm proud of or I really like. But at the end of the day it's a plastic plane Noone gives 2 craps about.

The modeling world is a facet of the current times we are living it. Entitlement and “absolute truths” are dominant but that”s not the actual world. Differences, multiple angles, variety is what we are living in and modeling is the same. As you correctly say, modeling is a hobby, an enjoyment, fun moments not a gospel. There’s not one way to build a kit, painting it, weathering. The “realism”, to me, is a bunch of b@#&s%*&. I personally ignore modelers who claim to hold the absolute truth, let them be. Luckily I also see many other modelers who humbly state their work is the way they do it but not the only way. We can get inspired, motivated, intrigued by other modeler’s work but ultimately it’s our creation, creativity and passion. We have the most powerful tool: ignore the cry babies and keep going along our path. Their cries will die down….. Excellent video!
