Hey, so I have 50 airbrushes. Don’t focus on the airbrush, you can use pretty much use any decent airbrush for this. It’s the technique that’s most important. For the compressor, I use a Sil-20a. It’s an oil compressor, which makes it so quiet that I forget it is on. It is whisper level, but it is pricey. However, if you take care of it. It will last a long time. I’ve had mine for 15 years.

@@kastlerock01 hey, so lacquer definitely will clean up Tamiya paints. But lacquer thinner is very toxic and you need to be careful when using it. Plus the smell is incredibly powerful. If you live with people or pets, they might complain. Thus I prefer to use Simple Green. It’s a natural cleaner you can find at your local Walmart for about $5 a bottle. It eats through acrylics like a hot knife through butter.

@@joelslutsky7370I recommend starting at 50/50 thinner to paint at 18-20 psi. Depending on where you live, if it’s really hot…you want your do 60/40 thinner to paint. Make sure to share the bottle really well.

@@coryy4543 there is a couple of ways you airbrush Vallejo Gloss with a .35mm airbrush 1) you can airbrush it straight from the bottle and thin it 70/30 primer to thinner, at 20 psi. It will cure in 24 to 48 hours. If you try to sand it before then it will most likely gum up on itself. 2) you can use Future, as I did in my video. Thin it 70/30 primer to future at 20 psi. It will make the primer more resilient. Give it one hour to dry and cure. 3) You can use my thinner mixture in my Vallejo video. Thin it 70/30 or 60/40 primer to thinner mixture at 20 psi. My thinner mixture also will make the paint resilient. But it will cause the gloss to dissipate and you will need to spray a gloss on top of the primer. Hope that helps!

Hey, you can use Vallejo thinner to thin both Vallejo Model Color and Model Air. While Vallejo states that Model Air is pre-thinned for airbrushing. That is not fully accurate, because they tested the paint in particular laboratory conditions. Unless you have the same conditions in your hobby room, you won't get the same results. Thus you have to thin the paint properly. For the best results, I recommend using the thinner mixture in my video. It will give you consistent airbrushing results and makes the paint more resilient.

@@OdysseyAviation you can use the thinner to airbrush. I would recommend thinning the paint 50/50 at 18 psi. But you will get tip dry more often with just the thinner. So just be aware of that and make sure to keep wiping the needle as needed.

I haven't tried Vallejo Thinner with Tamiya paints. I however don't think it will work because Vallejo is water-based acrylics and Tamiya is an alcohol-based acrylic. I would recommend sticking to Mr. Hobby Leveling thinner for best results or Tamiya X-20A. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the video and the mixture I will try it, because I have problems right now with Vallejo primers. Glad you like the video. Hopefully, I can answer your questions fully. My first question is: How do you prepare the surface before priming? Do you use dish soap and water or rinsing after cleaning with IPA? So most of the time, I don’t prepare the surface. I don’t know what kind of models you build. But I am an airplane guy, most modern kits don’t have the “oily residue” problem that older kits had. To be honest, it might best to wash the kits before to be safe. Now I will say, once the model is assembled and ready to be primed. I DEFINITELY wash my model with Dawn liquid dish soap. I do this because I have sweaty hands and want to make sure I don’t leave finger prints. You can also use IPA….but I find IPA is pretty expensive. Dawn liquid dish soap is $3 dollars for a bottle and lasts forever. My second question is: What is the optimal distance to prime a model? When I prime it looks like I am spraying dried particles? So if you’re getting dried particles you are probably too far from the model. I recommend 4-5 centimeters from the model. And this both for priming the model and airbrushing the paint. If you look at my videos, you can see I am about 4-5 centimeters (NOT INCHES) from the model. You want the paint or the primer to lay down wet. Laying down wet helps the paint and primer level better. But the opposite side of this is, if you are to close, it will make the paint/primer run. When you do this, don’t blast the primer on, go nice and easy. Same with paint, you should get a beautiful smooth finish. My third question is: Is the recommended psi value for the situation where the trigger is pressed? When I set my psi to 20 and press the trigger it drops to something like 17 psi. For primers, I recommend above 20 psi. You are correct, when you press down the trigger, the PSI drops. But if you start 25, it will drop but you will still be over 20psi. I DON”T recommend 25psi for painting acrylics. Stay within 15-20 psi for acrylic painting. My fourth question is: How long should I wait before painting over? Ok, so waiting time depends on how you decide to go about airbrushing Vallejo primer. If you decide to airbrush Vallejo without using my thinner mixture or adding in Future, you MUST wait at least 24-48 hours. Vallejo takes a very very long time to cure (it dries fast but curing is different). But if you decide to use my mixture or add in future, you can wait 15 mins and put paint on top. But if you need to sand the primer, wait 45 mins. My fifth question is: How many coats of primer? As many as you need to cover the model surface. So if you use a white primer, it will take more coats to cover things. That is just the property of white primer/paint. But Grey and Black primer covers pretty quickly. Normally I find 2-3 coats with Grey or Black cover everything. My sixth question is: Is 0.3mm needle is good for the job? You can, but you will get clogging faster. Better to use a .5mm. I was spraying with 20 psi from 20 cm (My first model kit) and had curing problems. Even after 5 days it seems to peel off, I will try 5 cm. I am looking forward to trying your formula. @@yasinsen6301 Yeah 20 cm from the model is way to far. But also Vallejo primers (if you don't add in Future or my mixture) take forever to dry. As far as brush painting Vallejo Air, it requires several coats. Vallejo air is formulated for airbrushing. Vallejo Model Color is made for brush painting, it is thinner and has a higher pigment count. And thank you for the kind words, I am hoping to have a few new videos out soon!

@@arewethereyetmodeling2196 I finally tried your mixture, painted from 5cm. I still have curing and adhesion problems. My kit is miniart, I washed it with dish soap before painting. Do you think I use less primer than it is needed. I usually gradually prime by pulling the trigger as little as possible. I am not sure it causes prime to dry before it reaches the surface or something else. I will try more.

I used 2 different airbrushes in the video: the Harder Steenbeck Evolution and Infinity. But don’t fixated on the airbrush, the techniques are the most important part. If you understand them, you can use any airbrush.

So introspective I didn’t clearly explain myself. Here are two ways which might help clarify things: The way to look at is, the formula is 2 parts: 90% liquid + 10% retarder. The liquid portion is 70% flow improver + 30%thinner. The retarder is just the retarder. You don’t need to be precise with the retarder portion. If you live in a colder environment you might only need 3-5% retarder and the rest liquid mixture. But if you live in a hotter environment like me, you probably want to do around 10% retarder. The thing I want everyone to note, you have to have all 3 ingredients for the formula to work effectively. And here is an even more simplified way: 7 part flow improver, 3 parts thinner and 1 part retarder

Hi, yes I can give you tips on Hataka Red line. So I tested with my thinner mixture (the one in this video) a while back. The mixture in my video works on all water based acrylics With the red line, I did 60:40 thinner to paint ratio at around 18psi. They worked really well at that range and thinning. Hope this helps!

Hi Bill, glad you like the videos. Regarding your questions 1) no matter what type of gloss (acrylic, lacquer, enamel), always use low air pressure, 12-15 psi. And make sure to do wet coats. 2) with the LP9 LP24, you can airbrush then out the bottle. But for best results I recommend using Mr hobby leveling thinner. Thin at 50/50 low pressure, so wet coats, not to far from the surface. You should get a beautiful finish. Let it dry 24 hours.

Hi, yes. Model Color is formulated for brush painting. So it has much more pigment and less carrier liquid. I have a video on how to airbrush Model color using the thinner mixture. I recommend 80/20 thinner mixture to paint.

Hi yes, I did. I tried all sort of different companies/brands. You should be fine using liquitex retarder, as long as the retarder is still good. Retarder goes bad really quickly. So as long as it’s good, you can make the mixture formula with liquitex.

Hey, so I am gonna drive cleaning airbrushes into two categories. Simple clean and through clean. Simple clean is cleaning your airbrush everytime you use your airbrush. Through clean, you should do once a month just to be on the safe side. I have a video in my channel titled "Airbrush tips and tricks" recommend you check out that out for cleaning techniques. Hi, sorry for my belated reply. Just saw your message. Yes, the primer can be thinned. So I have a newer video on my channel titled "how to get the best of acrylic primers". I thin the primer using my mixture formula. I often need to prime small areas or very confined areas where I can't blast primer on. So I thin the primer and airbrush the parts. Keep in mind depending on your airbrush (different airbrushes have different air flow) thin it 70/30 or 60/40 primer to thinner mixture. Use lower PSI like 20 and go slow. You will also need to give it more time to dry. But after an hour or so it will be smooth and sand-able.
