I agree for once, I was sucked in within the first 10 seconds of S;G, and felt something was missing from S;G0 from the start. I could never relate to everyone who says the original "picks up." I'm like, wtf I was in love throughout the entire thing from the beginning? I just loved how weird and "off" everything was in the original, and the weird camera angles and colours... 0 is just dead by comparison, visually speaking. I think there was something else off with 0, maybe the pacing or interactions or something, my attention just wasn't kept as well as in the original.

Yeah, the directing is definitely the biggest problem with S;G 0's anime, if only because the original did it so right. But to be completely honest, I wasn't at all surprised that it turned out like that, because it was an absolute fucking miracle that the original got such a good adaptation in the first place. I mean, visual novels from this studio almost NEVER get adaptations that do them justice, not just from a visual perspective, but from a plot perspective as well. Not just after S;G, but before as well. I mean, the exact same writer wrote Chaos;Head a year before, and the adaptation of that was so bad it was completely laughable. And then Robotics;Notes came out after S;G, same writer once again, also set in the same series and universe, and its anime was clearly very high-budget, but they still managed to fuck the plot completely sideways. Then Chaos;Child, then Occultic;Nine, and rather than wondering what went wrong, I have to wonder how the fuck S;G ever got it so good to begin with. In light of their track record of adaptations, the quality of the 0 anime actually makes a hell of a lot more sense.
@villadavid19974 жыл бұрын
"I mean, the exact same writer wrote Chaos;Head a year before, and the adaptation of that was so bad it was completely laughable. Only the VNs (the source materials) were written by the same people (Naotaka Hayashi and Chiyomaru Shikura) and they are all masterpieces.
@kumintsuyuri4 жыл бұрын
@@villadavid1997 Trust me, I know. But I didn't say the anime adaptations were made by the same people at all. I think you misread my comment. My point was that *regardless* of the quality of the visual novels, the quality of the anime adaptations have been spotty at best. C;H and S;G (VNs) were both fantastic, but S;G just so happened to be lucky enough to get a fantastic adaptation. And then none of the other VNs after that got so lucky ever again. So yeah, by "the same writer" I was talking about Hayashi, and I was talking about the visual novels there.

@SeralyneYT5 жыл бұрын
Welp. Guess I'm at it again. Steins;Gate 0 isn't perfect, and I completely respect your opinion. What I don't respect the reasoning behind it, as it was based off of a complete misunderstanding of the plots of both shows. 1:18 - Gonna start out with a nitpick. While yes, Steins;Gate 0 is a visual novel, the visual novel in itself is a combination of new story content mixed in with old story content originating from various Drama CDs, Light Novels and Manga. The material 0 was adapted from was, as I've said before: Arc-light of the Point at Infinity (this is where the main plot is derived from) Annually-Chained Ouroboros - The Light Novel adaptation of Steins;Gate. This is where a big portion of the concept for how the Beta Attractor Field works is laid out. The Epigraph Trilogy - Amadeus as a plot device, Kagari (child version), Leskinen and Maho being characters at all. And naturally speaking, the rest of the content is original to the anime or the VN. 4:12 - Yes. The style was off compared to the original. The characters had a breast size increase, but apart from that, the characters are themselves. They act as they would have in the original. Whether this is based off your flawed understanding of the characters (I've already gone into extensive detail about this in my previous comments on your S;G0 series), or this is a problem with the adaptation of the original as a whole, I cannot tell. 4:23 - Yes and no. Parts of the story of what would eventually become Steins;Gate 0 predates the original 2011 anime. The Science Adventure series has also gone through two release cycles at this point. Chaos;Head Noah got Chaos;Child, Steins;Gate got Steins;Gate 0. Robotics;Notes Elite got Robotics;Notes DaSH. Chaos;Head and Robotics;Notes are basically unspoken of in the anime community. Despite this, Chaos;Child got an anime adaptation, despite the disaster that was the Chaos;Head anime. Heck, Chaos;Head even got a re-adaptation (in the form of a 20 minute recap) for Chaos;Child. 5:01 - Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0 doesn't even share a villain what are you smoking? SERN and the Committee of 300 is basically irrelevant in 0. In fact, most of the villain characters we see in the original turn around and become allies in 0. All in all, you said it yourself. Your stance in the video is rather pretentious, and quite honestly, a tad hypocritical. While you paid attention to the cinematography, you might have paid attention to it to the detriment of actually understanding both the original and 0's plot. Most of your explanations for the characters is based in headcanon, headcanon which is disproved within the work you're critising.

@@SeralyneYT one of my immediate problems was that the characters weren't behaving at all like they should have been based on the original series, and I felt that way because I watched S;G0 immediately after finishing the the original series for the 3rd or 4th time. My only problem with Digi is that he never argued that point competently, and opened himself up to scrutiny to literally anyone who had watched the show attentively.
@SeralyneYT5 жыл бұрын
@@benzed37 Basing it off my personal understanding of the show. Although this is an adaptation of a visual novel. It follows the characterisation of the visual novel, which stays consistent from S;G to S;G0 and with the S;G0 anime. There are two possible interpretations of what causes the disconnect here. 1. Viewers that didn't understand it 2. The original anime was poorly adapted in terms of characterisation. The only places where I've seen people outside of Digibro's audience complain about characterisation were about Okabe going from mad scientist to sad scientist, and about Suzuha not shooting Reyes (or was it Kagari? I can't remember. It's been a while), which is basically just Suzuha admitting that convergence is absolute there. Suzuha couldn't kill them. Even if she tried. Could she wound them? Maybe, more likely she'd miss though, or be out of bullets, etc. (there's canon evidence behind this too). Could the execution have been better? Definitely. Could it have been better communicated? Of course. Is it a plot hole or bad characterisation? Not really.

maybe I forgot most of it, but the reason I never took an interest in Zero was a single idea I had of where it should have sprung from: It should have been about the "time war" that was hinted by our time-traveling daughter... but it wasn't. That is where I felt it lost me. I wanted that. In my mind: Okabe fails to save Makise Kurisu, becomes depressed about it, but somehow becomes the leader of the resistance in the "Time War". To save the timeline, and give himself another chance to save Makise Kurisu, he sends his last D Mail to his past self... and thus preventing his timeline from occurring again, as we see the Okabe of this Timeline eventually lose the "Time War". I am sure this sounds alot like a "Terminator" movie, but in my mind this felt like a natural path they could have taken with Zero... that they just didn't. Now what do you do to encourage Okabe to send this D Mail? that is the question. They always hinted at this big "Time War" as if it was something that should have involved the "failed" Okabe more... but Zero just lost me the moment they DIDN'T go with that possible route.

Oh, while I'm at it, if you want a version of Steins;Gate 0 told in a much quicker way, the original concept they expanded to make Steins;Gate 0 was a Drama CD, which is really good, called "Arc-Light of the Point of Infinity". Steins;Gate is not a sequel... it is a "what if scenario". It is a second half of the whole story, and it ties into the first season. It is basically how the Okabe that gave up was able to send the message back to the Okabe in episode 23 of season 1, and be able to try again. It is basically a worldline that occurred because Okabe gave up, and later he saw that he couldn't deal with the regret of what the worldline he chose in giving up came with. So he mustered the courage to go back and alter events, and everything that happened in Steins;Gate 0 tied in perfectly to the original Steins;Gate. The way you could view this entire anime to get the most fulfilling Steins;Gate experience is to watch season one from episodes 1-23. Then watch all of Steins;Gate 0. Finally, watch the final episode of season 1. The story becomes linear and the presentation of the story, not to mention the voice acting is phenomenal, regardless whether you choose to watch it dubbed or subbed. It is one of, if not the best time travel story that has been presented in any form of media to date. In my opinion of course.

Steins;Gate 0 is not a what if scenario. The events of 0 happened and contributed to the original's story, so it can't be a what if scenario.

It's a poorly written fan fiction based on something that went unanswered in the original show/vn. I can't think of a single thing in S;G 0 that I enjoyed because S;G 0 can't stand on its own as an anime. It is entirely reliant on you having watched or played Steins;Gate. Kagari exists for no other reason than Kirisu was popular but was dead in that world line. They could have easily made Kagari into a blonde girl or even a dude but no, she happens to look almost identical to one of the most popular characters from the previous show/vn. None of their personalities match their personalities from Steins;Gate. And the only person who has an excuse for this is Okabe but even that is done poorly. He was already depressed and stricken with grief over watching Mayuri die again and again. So why is his personality so different in S;G 0? Even when he finally falls back into his Kyoma personality, it isn't the same. And as Digi pointed out in one of his videos, Kyoma isn't some fake persona that he just cuts on or off. It's a defense mechanism he uses to cope with his social anxiety shit. But S;G 0 treats it like some quirky shit he can just turn off and on whenever he wants. And, as stated before, none of the characters have the same personalities they had before. Ruka is always around and more outspoken than he ever was in Steins;Gate. Faris, who I used to adore, is unbelievably annoying in S;G 0 because APPARENTLY being a girl in a cat costume is her only character trait. Moeka, who never spoke even in the world lines where she wasn't connected with Sern, decides she not only talks a lot but she's also super bubbly and hehe emojis so quirky. And don't get me fucking started on Mayuri. She was my favorite character in Steins;Gate and they absolutely ruined her. As if she needed a reason to believe in Okabe and slap him to bring him to his senses. I can literally bitch about this for hours but I'm ending this here and going to bed. Fuck S;G 0.

It doesn't help that Zero doesn't try to keep you invested in something. With the original it was the simple idea of what the hell was going on with everything and how it all ties back to the actions and consequences of our protagonist and crew. With Zero it goes on and on talking about interesting concepts but doesn't actually go all in and explore it. It also doesn't help that it's all science talk half the time. The great thing about the original was the fact it focused on characterization from the very beginning while giving exposition at the same time. The dialogue was always so great to listen to because of it always sounding so natural coming from these science nerds we come to love. I've always felt like Okabe should've taken a step back as the protagonist role since he doesn't contribute alot to the moving of the plot much in the first half. You can only go so far exploring trauma and rejection before you start checking your watch wondering when things will start happening. This is why I feel like we should've focused more on the lab members for the first half then switch to Okabe's point of view when it's necessary. Such as the switch to the Alpha line. Daru stepped up alot in Zero and wish we got the build up and satisfying resolution. He had alot of interesting and emotional scenes that could have had more impact if we got to see his building frustrations with Okabe. His scenes with Suzuha was always nice and getting to see him act more like a dad and mature person would be awesome. But we still don't learn much about Daru than what we already know. With Okabe in the first series we had ALOT of time to get a feel for his character. How he's so socially awkward and uses his persona to hide behind, his loving relationship with Mayuri and how saving her as a child was what is known as the birth of Hououin Kyouma. Since Okabe doesn't do much in Zero (which is the point I know. It's his character arc), we should flesh out the others more. Make them more than the tropes we know them to be. I honestly wouldn't have minded more scenes with Ruka and how he dealt with everything going on. The feeling of being left out clearly stuck with him till the very end so why not see him try to be more useful. Such as having a simple scene of him practicing with his sacred sword doing some cool as moves obviously being awkward about it since he's not confident yet. Idk there was alot to be explored with the seemingly non important characters.

@@khizarch4910 in defense of this, I didn't have a rant in mind when I was patroned and wrote the request for this after drinking a bit/getting really mad after being reminded of the fact that the Steins;Gate 0 anime exists (which is pretty evident by the way I worded it, I guess)

Steins;Gate grabbed the masses because of it's gimmicks and appeals first and foremost and kept attention with it's direction. Steins;Gate was not complete, if you payed any attention, you'd know that the end was a total ass-pull deus ex machina. The show also had a countable amount of plot holes etc, and it requires the future of Steins;Gate 0 for it to be at all justified (how they got to the ideal timeline - none of it worked at all originally, though some holes are never filled, contrary to opinions of people who think it's bulletproof). The appeal that a lot of people had with Steins;Gate was not the show itself as much as the ideas in the show. As a time travel piece it is not original in any way or particularly unique or creative; it's a standard time travel story with the well known tropes, like a hat-tip. The appeals are more on the members of the lab, particularly Okarin and his chuunibyou nonsense paired with Kurisu. When it comes to S;G 0, thi first major disconnect people have is that Okarin isn't the nutty guy anymore, he's depressed, as he ought to be given the circumstances. The second big disconnect is not having the actual Kurisu, as well as some other additional characters and changes which can seem a bit pandering to some, as if they are meant to try and fill the shoes of other chars not present for plot reasons. Steins;Gate digs far deeper into the psychology of all the characters and develops them far more than S;G did, gives plenty of juxtaposition for it as well. Not only that but plot-wise, aside from a few breaks from suspension of disbelief, it actually brings the entire plot into a place which allows it to stand out amongst most time travel stories, with the only similar i know of being the Time War lore of Doctor Who. S;G 0 was able to put everything into perspective and drag everyone though the hell that they would have in certain timelines, and would have needed in order to have the integrity to overcome what they were up against. S;G drastically underestimated the seriousness of the implications of there being multiple competing means of manipulating time, whereas S;G 0 is probably the most realistic snapshot of where such a thing would result in. Not only the warfare around it, but even the factor of the self-destructive nature of time travel technology; as the only way to fight against it is to eliminate it at it's source. I could rant and analyze S;G and S;G 0 for hours and write a massive report/review on it, but the ultimate conclusion is that S;G 0 was necessary, and brings a shitload of new things to the table, as well as follows through on premises to a degree rarely seen, especially in time travel fiction. Without the entirety of the S;G 0 timeline, the original S;G ending would be impossible. I wound S;G 0 to be far more exciting and thrilling than the original S;G due to it's level of escalation, granted it is a slow burner.

I keep seeing people online saying that Steins;Gate isn't anything original when it comes to time travel. Are there any stories you could recommend to me that you think do time travel well and in an original way?

I'm not sure how good the "originality" argument is, but I agree that it didn't make sense to begin with. The reason why S;G fans like 0 is because they never really cared about any of it making sense to begin with. People were attracted to "funny man do time travel to save cute girl".
@GenesisAria5 жыл бұрын
to the contrary, that's why people didn't like 0, because funny man was depressed man in 0, even though it made every sense for him to be despaired.

I honestly thought S;G0 kept up with the original in every regard whenever Kagari wasn’t on screen.

Yeah this criticism goes for the gross majority of sequels.

Steins;Gate 0 is the worst anime of all time. Let’s just be honest.

The worst anime of all time no, but sure it was not as good as the original Steins;Gate. I personally quite liked it after watching the whole thing for the first time and I did not really notice its flaws because of how attached I had become to the original. But yes after thinking about it I kind of understood what was the whole reason for watching it , it was about seeing my favourite characters on screen again. The one thing that really ruined the experience a bit for me was the blunt af side characters introduced in 0 except for Maho whom I really liked as a character.
