I've been driving lorries for more than 37 years and I still love going to work, the pay has suited me and I now have a 5 bed house in the country, no mortgage, am happily married and have 14 vehicles, or toys, to play with. Previous jobs include Farm Labourer, Lime Spreader, Quarry worker, plant operator, Blasting Assistant, Dumper driver, Bagger, Swing cable shovel driver, Grease Monkey and shit shoveller. I like to think I've earned what I've got and I'll tell you all that lorry driving is the best job I've had and I can not see me doing anything else. Great video Deady and yes I would agree, you do look good fella. All the best as always.

I spent 12 years working in an office until 3 months ago, took voluntary redundancy. I decided to re-train as a HGV driver and have recently passed my Class 2 with my Class 1 test tomorrow. I can honestly say, my mental health has improved massively! I'm happier, my family life is better and I'm currently (as a Class 2 driver) earning the same as I did, when I was in a highly responsible role working in an office

Deadly, you’ve just sat there and acknowledged that there are still many issues within the hgv industry ( ie unrealistic expectations from transport planners/managers, many companies that don’t care about your personal circumstances, drivers having the piss taken out of them)and then in the next breath you tell us you love the industry and will not stop defending it! If that’s not a contradiction I don’t know what is, I like you deadly I do, and you have shown with your content that there can be positives to joining the hgv industry, but even you must concede the way the drivers are treated regarding personal life , health and well-being, and just general respect isn’t good enough, I’m a driver of 14 years, came to the industry after a hand full of dead end jobs like yourself, I don’t hate the industry but I do acknowledge there is massive room for improvement across all aspects needed if it’s to encourage the younger generations to become part of it
@Deady2012
@Deady2012 3 жыл бұрын
It’s not a contradiction at all, what i’m saying is that: it’s the drivers that are supposed to be MEN that need to stand up for themselves! You all say yes to stupid shifts & yes to extra nights out when you really don’t want to do it, then phone your mates slagging the planners off and the job when it’s not them, it’s you that’s causing yourself the issue! If you think you’re unpaid move. If you think the jobs shit move. If you think the planners are wankers move. Yes it is as simple as that.

I’ve done a number of jobs In my life including time spent in the army and working for big company’s in operator , forklift and warehouse roles as well as Hgv roles , I strongly believe Hgv drivers should be paid more for what they are doing as some of the unrealistic workloads and long hours could easily contribute to having an accident and seriously injuring someone or myself. Some of the workloads people in the industry and placing apon drivers especially in class 2 roles where there is more unloading and loading involved as well as driving is far to much I believe all Hgv drivers across the board should be on a minimum of 800 a week for an average 44 hour week then maybe you wouldn’t get so many drivers complaining and also workloads should be reduced by at least 20% so that instead of driving about like a mad Man and doing crazy hours drivers can drive normal and complete there work without cutting corners or putting themselves and others at risk this would also cut down on road rage as drivers wouldn’t be as stressed 💯💯💯💯

Thankyou for my 30 seconds of fame Deady but not sure you get my point,i was not complaining about the job i was saying that our skills are not equalled by the pay.firstly you say you bring home around £600 a week but your doing over 60hrs for that 1 1/2 times an average weeks hours for a normal job.secondly you can do a plumbers course on line for about£400 quid granted your not going to be the best plumber in the world but your a plumber and you can charge £40-£50 an hour. Does a plumber have to have a medical,apply for a licence do a theory test,hazard perception,35 hrs cpc, test then another test if you want to use a bigger spanner ? Then when you have jumped through all those hoops you have other things to learn-fridges,boxes,roping,sheeting,straps,chains,de-mounts,curtains,low-loaders,tri-axles,twin axles,Urbans,rear steer all of which drive totally differently also not an issue now but all the different gearboxes you used to have 4 over 4, twin splitters the list goes on.Then if your an agency driver your expected to walk into a transport drive any truck with any trailer with any load and know what your doing,so tell me do you not need skill,knowledge and experience to be able to do this?And the dude on his feet all day for a pittance is he doing one of the 3 most dangerous jobs in the uk?and does he get home to see his kids every night? Look forward to you ripping the shit out of this one! And keep up the good work pal.

I done security work for about a year then worked in an Amazon fulfillment centre for 5 years. Been doing hgv driving for about a year now and I much prefer it, yeah the work life balance isn't great but the job itself is easy and my employer is fairly stress free and laid back. My biggest gripes would be the piss poor services in Scotland and some places that have you waiting for 3+ hours for loading and unloading. At times it feels like there's a forklift driver shortage instead of hgv.

Answer to your 1st question at 4:20 yes I worked in the supply trade for hgv goods I sold everything from suspension parts to body panels, I did this for over 16yrs from the age of 16 to around 32. I can honestly say I wasn't far off having a heart attack or something just as major. Partly because I worked with family " do not do it ever ", I've always wanted to have me hgv licence since I past my driving test at 17 & put it off for years due to the fact I got " comfortable " in my job, so when I left in Octoberish of last year I saved enough money to take my class2 " yes it took me 3trys to pass " but I did it & I can honestly say it's the best thing I've ever done, stress levels have dropped I'm not a stressy mess I'm a human being again!! Hgv driving has honestly changed me & I can't wait to take my class1 " once I've saved up again ". So if people are bitching & moaning about the job move on & do something different & try new & different things.

I’m a qualified bus driver, I completely agree with you. I detested going into the canteen to listen to other drivers that have driven buses for many years and on top rate of pay and perks etc, and moan everyday that they were leaving as it was crap etc. Yet there they would be there for many years later, just quoting the same crap and can’t stand the job, yet there they would be there slagging the job off and still moan and groan, hence why I never went to the canteen.

I'm on a walking floor and by no means is any of the work at all hard and I'm taking home 700-800 a week. Right from the start office tried pushing and I agree, you have to say no or they will contanstly expect it as your the driver you know what's can an cannot be done as most planners and transport have never even sat in a truck before.

I’ve worked in a kitchen, a bar, a office and even was a cop. I’ve done jobs with impressive titles and been stressed out my head. To the point I was going to the gym to bench or run the stress off. I’m now a truck driver, 10 years and counting. I love the industry, it has its faults but who or what doesn’t. I’m the happiest I’ve been in a job, I’m the least stressed I’ve been in a job and I’m the best paid I’ve ever been in a job for sitting on my arse. I think coming from a different industry into trucking gives you an complete different view of what we do. Truckers who have been truckers forever are somewhat blinded or have tunnel vision. That transport manager is out the get me or transport op etc… no mate they are just doing a job. Stop been a arse, treat them with a bit of respect and you might get some back. Good vid mate and I mostly agree, in fact the part I don’t agree with… I can’t even remember hahaha

Agree with you whole heartedly, Drivers are their own worst enemies. When dispatch tries to throw you another load, just say no. I've walked away from firms where the dispatch has told me I'll be fired if I don't follow their, often illegal, orders. Believe me, when the Boss finds out why you've submitted your Resignation letter his wrath is directed at the Dispatcher not you. I left General Transport, driving Class 1 and I now drive class 2, I work 5 days a week, 10 hours per day which includes loading and unloading, no more waiting time or overnighters. You've just got to be firm with Dispatch, once he knows you will not bend, he'll stop asking and the job becomes more tolerable. Your point about Drivers ego is also valid, why drive an Artic for less money than a rigid, it makes no sense to me either...

Hi Deady, HGV driving was my first proper job and basically I fit your description perfectly. I found it way too stressful doing 15 hour days etc, and I quit. Now I work a job where I’m working from home and I have such a better time. But still I think I’m just privileged and perhaps a bit stuck up, because I can absolutely see that truck driving is nothing at all compared to most jobs out there especially in the construction industry. What you’re used to before truck driving massively affects your perception of it for sure.

A high majority of english white uk born people just don’t have the work ethic. Not just in HGV but across the board. This was predicted prior to Brexit and it’s now coming to the surface. Myself as a business owner and haulage company owner from years of experience of hiring and firing I would much rather hire a young english man below 30 but would still rather employ a polish or some european. During covid i was in a hole..as iv been a chef for 31 years..i was made redundant as the hospitality sector ceased to trade completely for nearly a whole yea was a collapsed industry. So i found myself retraining as a driver on 7.5 tonnes using my grandfather rights on my licence. . No one would touch me..no experience etc..it was tough. I had a lucky brush one day..a well known and respected retailer ..offered me a driving job. In short..i fkin loved it.the customers..the drivers..the warehouse people..and transport managers the freedom it gave me out and about.... I learnt alot from these guys..and to be fair..i may have given them a glimpse of what a chef life is to them ie 80..90 hour weeks as standard in high end restaurants.. My hours were damn good whilst driving.. 45 ..at most. Breaks. Working conditions etc were spot on. I think its a brilliant industry but i can imagine if you find a shit employer it may have turned me..but i was fortunate. In short..catering reopened and im now back into kitchens as a high end chef in 5 star hotel operations. My craft..my trade. Do i miss the transport industry. You bet i do. Amazing folk . I now have a totally different respect for all professional drivers on the road and i salute them daily. You guys are the back bone of everything in this country. 🥰😉 Also your vids pushed me to get my cpc done whilst i was in the shit with no job..and no income..nice one buddy. For example, route planning, what do you look for on a route other than the obvious low bridges etc.... how do you note anything that is significant, also how you plan your breaks around work time and driving hours rules. Which sat nag do you use, are there any other practical driver aids you use? Have you got any tips on walk around checks, any help on when to put tachograph in waiting as opposed to a break or other work etc... I find no matter what job you do there is always good and bad points of the job and the health and saftey part is always a nightmare all jobs have responsibilty no matter what you do

Immigration drives wages down because, as you said, British people moan about money. When employers know there are people willing to work the same hours for less money, it makes no business sense to hire someone who wants more money. It's like people wanting an increase in the minimum wage. Seen the inside of a McDonald's lately? Those machines you order your food on replaced humans who demanded more money. Machines don't need breaks, they don't moan about the job they're doing, they just do it and they don't need to money to live.

same everywhere, people moan but do nothing to change. I left farming because it was hard graft for barely min wage but have moved on for the better. Good to see LGV rates going up. The industry does need to improve conditions to attract younger workers or women who won't do 15hr days or sleep in laybys (nor should anyone have to)

I constantly hear the ‘older driver’s’ moaning about the warehouse guys. I tell them give it ago in warehouse for a week cos I guarantee you’ll be begging get back behind the wheel after 2 shifts.

Hi Deady, best video so far, I agree with you and if those who moan did try a different job like cleaning on an MOD site with the pressure to keep them to a standard at ever decreasing staff levels they would be straight back in a truck! I took redundancy 3 years ago and have been much happier, I am finishing my cpc tomorrow then it's just a matter of booking my class 2 retest and starting driving, once I have my cpc card I may well start on 7.5tonner till I pass class 2! Have a good weekend and a good week next week😊😎

Yes the money isnt as great now as it was back when most of us was just an itch in our dads balls but it is what it is. Hopefully I can do my Class 2 and then my Class 1 soon and be able to call myself a proper diesel gypsy, keep up the great work pal and keep smashing the vids bud. As a former plasterer/tiler and hotel manager I can completey agree with you mate. Those were long hard days on my feet, granted the money was alright but If i can earn the same in a truck driving up and down the country and not doing damage to my shoulders, knees and back I'll snap your hands off... I'm pretty sure every job in the world has its problems, the HGV industry isn't any different, you can ask anyone who isn't a boss at where they work if they are treated amazing and if they love their job and I'll bet 80% of them will say no. It's working life at the end of the day, we're all just a number which can be replaced. So find a job you actually enjoy doing and enjoy yourself as best you can. I think that there are huge issues with all parts of the industry. Delivery/pick up sites, Government, Service Stations, Hauliers, Drivers and Transport Managers. The issue is, no one will work together and try to get bits resolved. Instead, drivers generally sit there slating everyone else and yet complain when they are treated badly (respect works both ways and calling transport managers 'spotty teenagers' is not going to get the industry improved, Everyone starts somewhere. Rather than slag them off, work with them and see what pressure they are under when it comes to their job (and vice versa). It's all good slagging off other people but that isn't getting the issues resolved). I think too many old timers remember how things were and want it to go back to that with the benefits and whatever. Many seem quite trade union type who are all about a lot more pay for a lot less work and the reality is, in every single industry, the trade union type isn't working. It's being shot down in almost all sectors by almost all companies. The reality is, money can be tight and no one has ever succeeded by giving a lot more pay for a lot less work. IT just doesn't happen. Companies have grown a backbone over time and are now doing things to the letter of the law, if it's legal, they'll do it (If it's illegal, report the company to the relevant authorities and move on). I've seen it first hand in the bus industry (hear me out), drivers screaming they need longer breaks, more pay, less work etc etc. I had one guy who was similar to some of these HGV drivers, slating young people sat in offices planning timetables, saying 'I need more time on this route, it's no doable' and yet often when they thought no one was around, that bus would come in 5 minutes early then they would hide away for a cigarette. You're paid to drive a bus, not stand around having a smoke. Layover, by all means, do what you want but don't claim you need more time when clearly all you want is more time so that you can take breaks, have a smoke and whatever. I don't think you work at Tesco and get a 5 minute fag break every 30 minutes! Another one 'were underpaid', there is a company over the road offering you more money, the reason you are low paid working for a small firm is because you got sacked from all the big companies because you can't stick to the rules. In which case, it's a you problem. I personally know of a driver who will purposely thrash and overheat buses to 'break down' so that they can get a swap. Leave late so they can sit on their phone scrolling through tiktok then complain they need more time. No, you don't need more time, you just need to leave on time and not sit on your phone all day. These same issues are rife in the HGV industry and it's a typical case of driver laziness or wanting to be paid while they do personal things. Go and work in any other job where you are in the workplace rather than out on the road, see how that goes down for you. Many think because there is no manager stood watching over them, they can do what they want and be paid for doing nothing. It doesn't work and if you have that attitude, you won't like any industry, no company intentionally pays you to do nothing. Not all issues lie with the operators/hauliers or whatever, a lot of drivers need to up their game else why should a company treat a driver with respect when the driver won't be a good ambassador for the company. It does work both ways but so many drivers are unrealistic with their demands.

Try Bus driving, shifts vary from day to day, split rest days no such thing as a weekend your days off may be Monday and Wednesday one week then Sunday Tuesday the next. Road users hate you passengers verbally abuse you. The lads who I worked with are leaving the industry and paying for their class 2 and class 1 license and loving it. You don’t like driving truck try driving Buses I am glad I am now retired and out of the industry, but it paid my mortgage and got my family fed. I was a bus/ coach driver for 43 years in Hartlepool. HGV easy compared to bus driving and before you ask I could not afford to leave and get a HGV job I had a mortgage and a family I now own my home and my boys are grown and are both HGV drivers as is my grandson who has just passed his class 1 at the age of 22 👍

The sooner the truckin industry is automated ( robots) the better the spare workforce then can work on all these farms that are finding it hard to find staff , There u go , all problems solved , , , by the way I worked in a carpet tile factory 3 shifts for 25y in Wigan. Mon - Fri,, at wknd we shot off to sort complaints out either in UK or Europe. I'm halfway through writing a book about what we got up too,. But I never once felt stressed or pissed off , but when I started driving HGVs. I slowly started getting pissed off with it all , I found it was a bad move, enjoyed it at first then stress and anxiety started to show its ugly head , I had 10y of it then decided to call it a day , but a suppose it's how you handle it. I've no patience for waiting hours at places , or or going to places in the middle of nowhere were you can only get the width of a wagon down the road and hope nothing is coming the opposite way , 15hr shifts , and not to mention the car brake checkers , that I could never understand ? , It's also too dangerous now too many pricks on the roads. I'm happy now . Be careful out there lad .

Worked in a call centre from 18 to 28 and then changed to HGV driving in 2017. I do think HGV driving is responsibility but isn’t most things. I enjoy it but like any job you find faults, but for every fault there is normally a positive. I think it depends on what you do within the transport industry as well. If you don’t want manual handling then drive for Tesco or Morrison’s and not company’s that want hand-balling. Where I work we are encouraged by people to take our time and I have a minimum of an hours brake a day regardless of the numbers of hours I’m on for the day.

Applied for a job with a company that puts you through class 2 and class 1 so hopefully get it. Now I became a bus driver in 2012 and in 2016 became a coach driver so used to large vehicles but if you want to talk about bag wages coach driving is terrible. I once did a 23 hour shift (double man drivikg and cleaning coach when we got back) and got paid £100 for that shift. That's why I currently work in a call centre lol. After a long break off the road I am now doing my HGV Class 2 training and you know what made me go back to driving? I used to work at Sainsbury's as a warehouse operator at a store, so unloading lorries and so on. Whilst I am looking to leave the HGV industry purely because it is having a negative impact on my mental health and general wellbeing in regards to my health, the pandemic kinda put this on hold as the job market went down the shitter. I wouldn't say it's an awful industry. Yes, sometimes people do place alot of pressure on you to get jobs done, even if its completely unrealistic. It's long hours and I'm a tramper so my work-life balance is a bit out of wack. But I get paid between 550 and 700 a week depending on hours, so it's not a bad wage. There is definately worse jobs out there. So I agree with you :) Good video Deady. :)

Call it nievety, but you Sir are a breath of fresh air! I'm currently trying to get into the industry, and as you stated in another video - why are so many sat in cabs slagging off a job they apparently hate, yet are still doing it? There are a few YT vloggers I've found that have some good content, but say how rubbish the job is. It seems to not just be this industry though, but plenty of others where people are complaining year after year, yet there they are still doing it. Why??? I just left IT after 20 years, because it *is* rubbish. People with little to no understanding telling people who have how to do their jobs, but worst of all, how long it will take, expecting highly technical work to take a matter of weeks, when months or years is more realistic. Those same idiots then complain when things don't work. Just look at Government IT projects, LOL. It's not the money that's the problem - it's the lack of time to do things right and as they should be done. You've made some interesting points in this video, and many can be applied to other industries, too. I do think there is an element of people not knowing anything else. Variety in careers is just as important as variety in the companies you work for. It's good to move around sometimes. Some of the most interesting people I know worked 2-3 different careers in completely different areas.
