I'll explain a bit Pepperoni is a type of salami, however it was not invented in italy. There exists all kinds of salami made differently in the world, italy has a dozen of salamis that taste differently, usually named after the region it was made from. Pepperoni is usually made from Pork, Beef and paprika and it's slightly smoky, even though it is cured it tastes better coked imo. Salamis in italy are usually made with just pork. Rarely is it made with Beef and it is, atleast to my knowledge, never suggested to mix the 2 together. We do have bresaola though, which is cured beef. In italy, salamis along with other cured meats is usually eaten as bread filling or on special occassions as appetizers with other cured meats. We snack on them every now and then though. We do have a pizza with salami topping called pizza alla diavola, which is the one I think that pepperoni pizza may have originated from, it is a bit spicy. Personally I think the closest italian salami that is similiar to pepperoni in taste is the spianata. It's made with pork, is a bit spicy and is reddish in hue. Another contender would be the soppressata which is also spicy. Both are made from the same region of calabria

@@srkares When you say "salami" you are probably thinking of a specific product (or at least you are wording your sentence as if you did), but the thing is that "salami" (or more specifically "salame") in Italy is more a GENRE of seasoned meat/cold cuts/sausages (pick your favorite translation) that includes dozens and dozens of different regional products. From an Italian's perspective the "pepperoni" (which we don't have and don't use) would be nothing else than another type of salami.

Here in italy we have like a dozen different kinds of salamis depending on how its made and/or in which region it was made. Pepperoni is made from beef, pork and paprika, it also feels like it is made to be cooked even if it is already cured. Salamis from italy are mostly made of pork and rarely beef, it is also not suggested to mix them together. Salamis here are is eaten either as appetizers with other cured meats or as filling for bread. We do have pizza toppings with salami but they are usually spicy and the pizza is called pizza alla diavola, other variations also exist such as combining it with italian sausage. But yeah all kinds of salamis can taste differently. The closest italian salami to pepperoni I can think of is the spianata, it is fire reddish like it and is spicy, it does not however use beef.

We do have something similar to pepperoni pizza in Italy: it's called pizza diavola (devil pizza), or pizza con salamino piccante (spicy salame). It's my sister's favourite, but I have never tasted american pepperoni so I'm not sure of how different they taste. Btw "peperone", which is the singular form of "peperoni", in italian means bell peppers. Chily peppers are called "peperoncini" (singular is "peperoncino"), so if you ever come to Italy and ask for pepperoni pizza, you might just end up with a pizza with bell peppers. Which is delicious, mind you: around my parts we have "pizza fiorentina" or "florence pizza", topped with bell peppers and tuscan salame, and it's simply scrumptious.

Fun fact, "pepperoni" exists in the Roman empire, but that's actually what we call bell peppers/capsicums. So if you order a pepperoni pizza you'll get a pizza with bell peppers instead. @@mareiziaNah not confusing at all. To keep it simple, pepperoni pizza was made by Italians who immigrated to the United States that were attempting to make dishes similar to dishes from Italy. Pepperoni was inspire by dishes like salami and the name stuck because the dish flavor was apparently similar to peperoni (with one p) due to the bold zesty flavor. The name mostly stuck because it was easy for english speakers to say and it provoked a sense of culinary heritage for Italians even though pepperoni is an American creation. As for latte, it evolved from a creative/ unique way to attract Americans who prefer larger portion drinks, customization options, and different flavors. (Sorry for the tism rant)
