Probably 120 out of the 150 bands I've seen live, were better live. But I may be an emotional fan, how I feel in the moshpit is a huge part of how I rate a live band compared to their clean studio version. If I go home deaf for 3 days. They're good.

These dudes are minstrels of the modern age. They rarely sing about themselves, but tell stories that mean something to them to help you learn about who they are. I've been with them from their first album. Amazing is what they are.

Amen!! There are plenty of "Rock Gods" ... from Chuck Berry to Slash with new ones born every day. But Iron Maiden is a different breed of animal. Between their vocals, the Dueling Guitarist (is it really a "Lead" and "Rythm") ... touring with a 50 foot Robot ... (Eddie was bigger than the entire stage last time I saw him). The stories they tell, of Pashendaele. I want to be offended by "British Rock" telling the story of "Run to the Hills" .. .. .. but I can't. Iron Maiden is EXCELLENT!!

I've been listening to Iron Maiden since 1982, at the age of 15. To give you a complete list of Iron Maiden recommendations, see my list below. Some of these you have already done. Iron Maiden is: Bruce Dickinson - Vocals Born: August 7, 1958 (age 63 years) Started with Iron Maiden in 1981, left in 1993 and rejoined in 1999 and present singer Steve Harris - Bassist and Founder Born: March 12, 1956 (age 66 years), Started the band in 1975 and has never left Dave Murray - Guitarist Born: December 23, 1956 (age 65 years), 1976-1977, 1978- present Adrian Smith - Guitarist Born: February 27, 1957 (age 65 years), 1980-1990, 1999-present Janick Gers - Guiarist Born: January 27, 1957 (age 65 years), 1990 - present Nicko McBrain - Drums Born: June 5, 1952 (age 69 years), 1982 - present Highlight of songs I'd recommend are: From Iron Maiden------ Phantom of the Opera - A must for live version Strange World (this one will be totally different Iron Maiden) From Killers ------ Murders in the Rue Morgue (Very loosely influenced by Edgar Allen Poe's short story, a story of a fugitive being sought for murder) Genghis Khan (an instrumental - perfect for air drumming) Innocent Exile (continues the theme of Murders in the Rue Morgue of an unjustly accused fugitive) Killers (A journey into the twisted mind of a deranged killer) Prodigal Son(about a repentant man reminiscent of the prodigal son parable found in Luke 15 of the bible) Purgatory(lyrics of song read like a poem) Drifter (focuses on the possibility of new beginnings) From The Number of the Beast------ Invaders (It graphically depicts the violence and horror of a defense against a Viking invasion) The Prisoner (based on the UK television series that ran briefly in the late 1960’s) 22 Acacia Avenue (The continuation of Charlotte the Harlot) The Number of the Beast (Inspired by a dream Bassist Steve Harris had after watching the movie the Omen2) Run to the Hills (about the European arrival in America told from the perspective of both the oppressed Cree and the invading Anglo-Saxon soldiers) Hallowed be Thy Name (about a man who is about to be put to death and what he goes through) From Piece of Mind------ Where Eagles Dare (based on an Alistair Maclean novel, (1967), and film (1968) about a WWII rescue of an American general from a Nazi stronghold in the Bavarian Alps Revelations (Starts with the Hymnal from Oh God of Earth and Alter, the next two verses on the Hindu philosophy, the third verse in Yoga a snake called Kundalini that lives at the base of your spinal cord, during meditation a spiritual entity is created symbolizing the transcendental union with God) Flight of Icarus (loosely based on the ancient Greek myth of Icarus) The Trooper (based on the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava 1854,which took place during the Crimean War) To Tame a Land (the song relays the story of Paul Atreides, Paul Muad'Dib, from the book Dune by Frank Herbert) From Powerslave------ Aces High (about aircraft dog fighting between the British and German fighter pilots of WWII) 2 Minutes to Midnight - About the Doomsday clock for the End of the World Back in The Village (The continuation of the song The Prisoner) Powerslave (about an arrogant pharaoh in his dying hours, he can't understand why he's about to die and fights it in vain) Rime of the Ancient Mariner - (From the poem of the same name by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (story about about an ocean voyage) From Somewhere in Time------- Wasted Years (A song about the admonition to appreciate the present and not to take things for granted) The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (based on a short story of Alan Sillitoe which was made into a 1962 film Alexander the Great (About the story of Alexander the Great From 7th Son of a 7th Son (a concept album)------ Infinite Dreams (Detailing someone who is tormented by paranormal dreams and nightmares) The Evil That Men Do (Title taken from a quote in Shakespeare Julius Caesar but the song is unrelated) The Clairvoyant (relates the reflections of the 7th Son of the 7th Son on his life and his powers) From Fear of the Dark------ Wasting Love (About the emptiness of relationships without love. Another Maiden ballad) Fear of the Dark (About being afraid of the dark and the things in the dark that might be there - absolute a live performance for this one) From Brave New World------ The Wicker Man (about the apathy of our modern society and our egotistic disinterest of what is happening until something happens to us) Ghost of the Navigator (The lyrics are a metaphor of life, with the ship sailing west towards the setting sun representing death) Brave New World (Loosely based on the 1932 novel by Aldous Huxley) Dream of Mirrors (Yet another song about reoccurring and maybe premonitory dreams) Out of the Silent Planet (Supposedly inspired by the 1956 science -fiction film Forbidden Planet) From Dance of Death------ No More Lies (The lyrics deal with someone knows his time has come with the possibility of reincarnation) Dance of Death (Orinally inspired by Ingmar Bergman's 1957 film The Seventh Seal - Another one to do as a live performance) Paschendale (about the Battle of Passchendaele during WWI) From A Matter of Life and Death------ Brighter than a Thousand Suns (About the dawn of the nuclear bomb age) The Longest Day (about the WWII Normandy Invasion) Out of the Shadows (Questioning the meaning of life)

Live version from Rock in Rio is better. Two things to bear in mind with Maiden: 1- they have (depending on line up at the time) three guitarists, all of whom play lead, rhythm, and solo. 2- their songs aren't structured like pop or rock songs (intro, verse, chorus, repeat, outro). Instead, approach them more like a classical piece.

Music is the universal language. I'm a 59 year old white guy, and I know you and I would be friends. I have been listening to Iron Maiden longer than you have been alive, and this was one of my favorite reviews you have done. In the beginning, when you were talking about it being a "slow song" I was thinking, "He doesn't even know". Then, immediately the beat dropped, and the look on your face was priceless. You were spot on saying, "You were going to sit there and watch...you knew what was happening." My second favorite part was when you paused it at the beginning of the guitar solo, and I was saying, "Come on man, you NEVER pause during the guitar solo." Then, right on cue, you said the same thing. I thought, "Hey, he knows." I enjoy your reviews and love for music.

Maiden has many songs that are amazing, and most of them are just telling stories. For example, Aces High is about the RAF fighting the Luftwaffen over the skies of the UK in WW2. The Trooper is about the Charge of the Light Brigage. Rime of the Ancient Mariner is literally just a retelling of the legendary poem of the same name. Run to the Hills is about the US genocide of the native americans. Holy Smoke is about televangelists. Number of the Beast is a story about a dude who went for a walk in the woods and stumbled upon demon worshippers and is pretty sure they actually summoned one as he ran for his life.

Iron Maiden is one of the most criminally underrated bands of all time. I know that they are acknowledged as one of the greats but it really doesn't do them justice. Most of their songs are fucking master pieces. Fear of the Dark, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Flash of the Blade, Hallowed Be Thy Name, and Aces High are all masterpieces. And for any of you that haven't heard Rime of the Ancient Mariner, it may just be the greatest musical accomplishment of all time. To convert a poem not designed for that rhyme and meter into a full length metal epic song that is super faithful to the original wording is unrealistically hard. It's shocking how skilled these guys are.

When Steve Harris (bass) founded Iron Maiden in 1975, he was writing his own songs and no bands wanted to play them cos they found them 'complicated' w/ time changes and harmonies that were difficult to play... which is why he formed his own band. A lot of bands stay in one tempo the whole songs... like all R&B and rap songs today, it's one beat, one tempo, one melody for 3 - 5 minutes. Most pop fans go for that formula - catchy hook, jingly melody, simple beat... Metal fans get bored w/ that. We want to hear the changes, the lead solos, the guitar harmonies, the riffs, the challenging arrangements... people go, 'wow, listen to that!' It grabs you like a vise, and most people don't like that particular style... they want a dance beat. Iron Maiden is not that kind of band. 'Fear of the dark' was probably inspired by dark literature... like Edgar Allan Poe, who wrote stories about paranoia, mental instability and macabre scenarios... Most of Iron Maiden's lyrics were written about literature, poems, movies, print stories, TV series, history, fantasy, etc... For example: Maiden's song 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner' was taken from a poem of the same name by Samuel Taylor Coleridge... their song 'man on the edge' was based on the Michael Douglas movie 'Falling down'... the song 'Aces high' is about the Battle of Britain during World War II... etc.

we are meanies - that little evil streak waiting for the song to kick it up, especially after, bless your heart, saying this was a "slow" song - and you didn't disappoint with your reaction :) hahaha sorry but that was classic - Maiden are never slow, rarely quiet and will always knock your socks off

Hell yes! You really do need to hear the version from A Real Live One, one of these live albums, recorded at a concert in Helsinki! Now go listen to Heaven Can Wait and The Trooper, and Run To The Hills, 7th Son of the 7th Son, so many more!

You need to take guitar lessons, and stop talking about it. It's not easy. But, you'll learn that some things are easier than they sound.
