“The Trooper” is based on the Charge of the Light Brigade, a historic event that occurred during the Crimean War in 1854. The song tells the story of a British soldier’s futile heroism during this ill-fated light infantry maneuver at the Battle of Balaclava. The lyrics vividly depict the chaos and bravery of the soldiers, with lines like “The mighty roar of the Russian guns” and “When a Russian gets me in his sights.” Iron Maiden’s iconic track remains an essential part of heavy metal music, drawing inspiration from Lord Tennyson’s poem of the same name. Iron Maiden is considered to be one of the most influential heavy metal bands of all time. They have inspired many other bands, including Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Testament, Exodus, Overkill, and Death Angel. Other bands that wouldn't exist without Iron Maiden include Slipknot, Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold, Opeth, Sabaton, Emperor, and Cradle Of Filth This band is one BIG rabbit hole.. you should do Aces High next.

Energy is the paramount word when talking about Iron Maiden. This is one of the oldest songs and of they were very young here. But they are still active, and they have three guitarists now. To listen how they fare nowadays I highly suggest listening to (and watching the animated video of) "The Writing on the Wall" from their last album Senjutsu, that came out more or less three years ago.

Brother. Congrats on discovering Maiden. Now may I recommend the following Maiden songs to you: "Hallowed Be Thy Name" "Aces High" "Two Minutes To Midnight" "Flight of Icarus" "Revelations" "Powerslave" "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" "Alexander The Great" "Stranger In A Strange Land" Anything off Seventh Son of A Seventh Son "When The Wild Wind Blows" "Empire of the Clouds" Enjoy your deep dive into one of the greatest bands on the face of the planet. If you ever get the chance to see them live...GO! Trust me. I was "late to the game." I saw them for my first time in 2017. Then right before covid hit the U.S. hard in September 2019. Those were two of the greatest concerts I've seen in over 40 years of concert experiences. And happily I'm going to see them again in November in Fort Worth, Texas. I CAN NOT WAIT! I stumbled on your channel and just LOVED your unrestrained and REAL reaction to Maiden. Enjoy your swim in the Maiden sea. You will LOVE it my friend! Up the Irons!

Same for me pal. I was 8 when I was at a friend's house and his dad had a huge record collection. One day my eye caught the artwork from the Aces High single with Eddie flying a spitfire and I thought it was amazing. His dad played it for me to listen to and I was hooked from then on. That got me interested in WWII and the Battle of Britain and then aircraft in general. I now have a worryingly large collection of military model planes. Then through more listening I started getting more and more interested in history and literature. I learned or at the least was motivated to learn more about history by Iron Maiden than any history class at school.

Fantastic reaction! Thank you!👍🏻 With many Iron Maiden songs you get an accurate history lesson. The Trooper tells the account of a British soldier in the Battle of Balaklava during the Crimean War. Lord Cardigan led the British cavalry against Russian forces during this battle on 25 October 1854. Lord Raglan had intended to send the Light Brigade to prevent the Russians from removing captured guns from overrun Turkish positions. However, there was miscommunication in the chain of command and the Light Brigade was instead sent on a suicide mission charging straight at heavy Russian artillery which cost the lives of three hundred British soldiers. Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote a poem to commemorate this disaster and he called it "The Charge of the Light Brigade". The bronze that the recaptured guns were made from was used to make the Victoria Cross, a military medal of the very highest order that was awarded "for valour" and designed by Queen Victoria herself. Very few of these have ever been awarded, even to this day. Other great Iron Maiden history lessons you could check out.... Run to the Hills, Alexander the Great, Paschendale and Empire of the Clouds. I've been a Maiden fan since hearing their debut album on cassette in 1980 when I was 10 years old. I've seen them live every time they've played in London, their home ground and mine too, and they never disappoint. Up the Irons!!!

You know a band is epic when the chorus of one of there most popular song is Ooooooooh! Ooooooooh! My favorites are Alexander the Great, Powrslave & Flyght of Icarus; but the first metal song that i liked was Hallowed Be Thy Name. So my suggestion is the 1982 Live version in Hammersmith.

I have seen Iron Maidan live more times then I can remember since the 80's, at least 15-20. The bass player is the brains behind this band. He writes deep lyrics about many historical events and is the best musician, always listen to the bass line with this band. The singer was one of the first in heavy metal to sing with such range and power like an opera singer. I would recommend checking out Alexandra the Great or The Rime of the Ancient Mariner next. Both deep thinker songs about historical events/stories. You want to go old Iron Maiden, like pre Seventh Son of the Seventh Son. Everything after that is meh.
