I think most of the other songs from this session are a bit more accessible, something like Shofukan, Sleeper or Outlier might be a better introduction. Or their new songs Trinity or Bet. PS: how Snarky Puppy mostly works is that the songs are written and everyone knows them by heart, and then the solo's are improvised. I went to their concert in Amsterdam 2 days ago and it was phenomenal

the drummer, larnell lewis, supposedly was called in as a replacement for a different drummer for this concert -- if i remember correctly, he learned the sheet music for this while on the plane to whatever city this was in (I think its somewhere maybe in the netherlands)

EDIT: the genre you’re looking for is ‘jazz fusion.’ Michael League (bass) is the bandleader. Larnell Lewis (drum kit) learned this live set by ear on the plane ride to the gig as a last minute fill in. Dudes a beast. The song is more like an outline that’s filled in with improv, namely the solo work by the legendary Cory Henry and that ridiculous dueling sax/trumpet solo

Snarky puppy is very much a band, though a large one, and when it comes to the song being improvised or not, they have an established structure to the song with parts left empty to improvise over, which is what that amazing keyboard solo was Hope this is helpful 👍

Glad you enjoyed it, but i suspected that this song might be a bit overkill for you. If you're looking for more, then their song with Jacob Collier "don't you know" is badass, and has vocals. I don't know sh*t about them, except the fact that Larnell Lewis on drums is killer (he learned that song on the plane, and it was more or less the first time he played it), and If i had to choose between listening to Chopin or Cory Henry (keybord solo) i would choose Cory without thinking, and I freaking love Chopin.

First off, bro, NO ONE can "teach" you what you're listening to. If you listen to mus... if you listen to various genres of music, you will know what you're listening to. If music "strikes a chord" within you, you'll KNOW and be able to distinguish what category that particular peice of music belongs in. At least that's how it was/is with me from my experience. Also, know that Larnell Lewis (the drummer) was called "last minute" for this recording session. He learned all of the session's music on the 7 hour flight; came in and nailed EVERYTHING. Which alone is what most (if not all) musicians would consider "otherworldly" remarkable. And, yes, Snarky Puppy IS a band/orchestra lead by the bassist Michael League. He writes and orchestrates most of the music himself. Personally, I'm just REALLY happy that Lingus is your introduction to Snarky Puppy. It was my first exposure to them as well. I'm definitely subscribing because I'm eager to see you watching/reacting to more of Snarky Puppy's material.

You seem to keep finding songs I love so figured I'd drop this just in case you're looking for something jazzy but off beat. Checkout anything by KNOWER or Louis Cole. If you want to REALLY stretch your musical experience and see some top notch musicians memeing the lookup ClownCore. If it helps with understanding the song, this group generally has a rough outline of a song with spots for various solos and they meet up to do recording sessions occasionally. This is just one of the versions of this song that they played and it had the improvised keyboard solo they liked the best so it was chosen. Also the fact everyone loves to drop, the drummer learned the song on the flight over to record so his playing is extra impressive just for that alone.

This is a great intro to Jazz. Snarky Puppy is on top of the game. They are all top notch. The drummer is in my top 5 ever. His musical IQ is off the charts. He has a drum solo in a song he wrote City Lights that is a modern Moby Dick.

Would you consider putting certain days aside for certain genres? Like a metal weekday, and another genre for the weekend, or something along those lines. The hose looking thing connected to the microphone is the tube to a talk box. A talk box is a thing where you plug in your instrument, guitar, keyboard, synth etc. And the sound of the instrument goes through the tube into your mouth and you can shape the sound with your mouth and and it kind of makes it sound like your instrument is talking. *Edit* sorry if this is a bad explanation here's just a example. Snarky Puppy is an instrumental group that leans on jazz, but it isn’t exactly jazz in the traditional sense. Originally from Univ of North Texas, the band members change on occasion, but it is a set group (not a collab). Cory Henry on keys is probably the most well known. Larnell Lewis, the drummer, learned the entire set of music on a flight to Amsterdam to replace the regular drummer who had a passport/visa problem (I think) and couldn’t go. Larnell is famous for a video where he listens to Metallica one time, then plays it through nearly flawlessly. Hooks and lead lines are pre written (that’s how they all know to play the same thing), but various players take turns playing solos that are usually improvised. If you want to check out another contemporary jazz group, try Robert Glasper.

Great reaction! Short answer on "is it improv or not?": the solos are, the rest is not. :) There's a lot more nuance I could get into, but that's the gist of it! When you hear all the horns playing together, that's written and (in this case) memorized. When you hear one take off on their own, that's improvised. The keys solo from Corey Henry is most definitely improvised, as well. This holds tue most of the time in jazz (but not always): solos improvised, group playing usually not. :)

Man, seriously, don’t put yourself down like that…. It’s music and you really enjoyed it and that’s all that matters - period! Same with all music really (I’m a classical singer..) I could tell you bits and pieces about the way it’s put together (mainly as a jazz piece but with funk / rock elements). The band knows how many bars will be played in each section, how the harmony will go during those sections and there will be a few rehearsed riffs, but within that framework there’s a huge amount of improvisation. Eg the horn section at the end of the opening section is improvised. Cory’s keyboard solo is improvd with a couple of planned moments in the middle and again at the end. The drummer, Larnell Lewis, unbelievably was a last minute stand-in and only learned most of the tracks on his flight over to Europe arriving on the morning of the 1st recording 😮session so next to no time to rehearse. He and Cory Henry are 2 of the best musicians in their field at the moment.

As others have said, Sleeper is the song from this session where the man plays that hosepipe...and I think I prefer it over this song because of the extra emotion Shaun Martin adds (can a hosepipe make you cry? Depends what is done with it.)

You should react to tricot and ttng. I think you'll like those bands since they've toured with chon and polyphia. For tricot first to anamein (2018 live version), then potage, yosoiki, E, and inai. For ttng react to gibbon (acoustic). I also think you'll love toe- goodbye (I prefer the four minute version).

This is easily the worst song to introduce jazz to someone followed by Giant steps. Check out some frank Sinatra or duke ellington big band stuff. It’s more digestible and really does take jazz knowledge to appreciate what they’re doing
