His wife, June Carter Cash, sitting above him in the vid, passed after this video came out. He passed three months later. June was herself a prominent music figure in the Grand Ol' Opry circle of the 1950s and 1960s. Their relationship is legendary among those of us who follow music and pop culture. She got him off drugs. Their son was kidnapped (but survived). The story goes on and on......as does the music.

This is an old man reflecting on the pain of past mistakes and saying goodbye. When his daughter heard it she told him it sounded like he was saying goodbye and Johnny said "I am". That last shot of him closing the lid on the piano like the lid on a coffin just hits me hard every time. I've been listening to Johnny Cash my whole life and there was something very final in that.

Final is absolutely right. When they filmed the closing of the piano lid, that was actually the last time Johnny touched that piano. That WAS the end, not a dramatization.

Johnny has a history of battling drug use, back when he hung out with Waylon Jennings and such. He overcame the addiction thanks to the help of June (his wife) and rehab. This was filmed in his house shortly before June passed away. She heard him singing and came downstairs to check on him. The director asked her to stay for a few minutes to be in the shot.

As another twist, the place where a lot of this was filmed, The House of Cash, the Johnny Cash Museum burned down shortly after their deaths.
@markwise91387 ай бұрын
@@ermakers1297 A little correction, The House of Cash museum is ok. It was the actual home of Johnny Cash (where this was filmed) that burned down thanks to Barry Gibb of the BeeGees fame. He bought it and was renovating it. It caught fire during rennovations.

I’m an eighty year old man. As a Southern California white boy digging on the early Elvis, I bought the “I Walk The Line” 45 single when the song was a hit on the radio.. And I can play and sing “Hurt” today. And yet, watching this video and observing your reactions, I couldn’t stem the tears. Life can be and is a tragedy. I know of no other performance that expresses this so deeply, so profoundly.

"Everyone I know goes away in the end." I'm sure Trent Reznor was saying something about abandoned friendships, and possibly about being so down in your own depths that you push everyone away. But Cash singing it evokes a similar sentiment to what my Mom had recently, when she said "I'm at the age where I have more friends in Heaven than I do on Earth."
@vidpie6 ай бұрын
My mom last month, "Guess how many Christmas cards I received this year." ..."One." She's had two brothers pass away in recent years. An older sister is in a nursing home in another state. It makes my mother sad that she doesn't remember my mother (as in her memories are lost). My mom sends her a gift though because she can't bear the thought of other residents opening gifts and her sister not having one.

Hopefully Joe E. sees this as well... So Johnny Cash may have used Trent Reznor's song, but the lyrics could have been about Cash. He was the definition of a hellraiser. He did a LOT of drugs, had all kinds of run ins with the law, was definitely a wild one... so it's so fitting that he's singing these lyrics, looking back on such a tumultuous life.

Despite this being a cover of the Nine Inch Nails song “Hurt”, once Johnny Cash sang this cover, Trent’s words were,"that isn't mine anymore". high praise indeed. This version hits so much harder because of Cash’s delivery AND the years behind his performance. It hit’s especially hard after watching the movie Walk The Line, based on his life.

Trent Reznor, of Nine Inch Nails, the author of this song, said that watching Johnny perform this felt like someone was kissing his girlfriend. He also said that it wasn't his song anymore and that he just carried it for Johnny for a while. Johnny was addicted to drugs for a long time in his early life. You can get a good sense of it by watching the movie, "Walk The Line" with Juaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon.

Back in the late 80s, when I was 21 or 22, I attended a party and they started playing Johnny Cash. These were NOT country music-type people, so I was surprised by the music choice; all I knew about Cash at the time was that he was a "country" singer. One of the attendees, noticing my lack of enthusiasm, looked and me and asked, "Don't you like Johnny Cash." I shook my head and he answered, "Then man, you've got NO soul." I will always remember that, because he was right lol. I'd like to think that I've got soul now that I've come to understand that music is music, and all music that has soul is great music. I will always feel grateful for that lesson.

React to "Sunday Morning Coming Down". Johnny was dying from cancer when he recorded this. "Further On Up The Road" is another song from this session. Johnny lived a very hard life especially when he was young. Drugs, booze, prison you name it he lived it. Eventually he got past all of life's sh.t, found his wife, found God, took a concert for the prisoners at Folsom Prison and became the legend he is today. There's few people I respect more than the man Johnny Cash was. He was a real as dirt.

Yeah, when Trent wrote this, it was about addiction. When Johnny covered it, it was about age. He played it for his daughter before it was released… she said “Dad, this sounds like you saying ‘goodbye’.” He answered “I am.” A couple months after the song dropped, his wife passed (you see her for a second in the video), and a couple months after she passed, he joined her. I’m a grown-ass man, and I tear up every time I hear Johnny’s version. I’ve been a Nine Inch Nails super-fan since the early 90s, but I don’t cry to their version of the song. This hits me that hard. And when he closes the piano at the end…

Nashville record industry forgot that they were built by artists like Johnny Cash. There was a reason Nashville was called the house that Cash built. By the early eighties Nashville record executives and the Country Music Association were telling Johnny he was over, nobody wanted to listen to him anymore. In the early 90s Rick Rubin approached Johnny and convinced him to create the 6 albums for American Recordings. Rubin produced Metallica, Run DMC, Beastie Boys, and LL Cool J. This video won a VMA award but the country music establishment did not even recognize the records. It was a massive vindication to introduce Johnny to a whole new generation of fans and have them love him as much as my generation did. Hip hop and metal gave Rick the clout to get these 6 albums done and make Johnny Cash a 90s and 2000s pop/rock star for these great albums.

So for me Johnny Cash really embodied the songs he was singing and I believe that’s why everyone connects to him even if you’re not a big country fan. Many of his songs have a bit of true life experience for him and people instantly connect with him….. that’s why he is so great. Much of his career was going against the grain, not always adhering to normal expectations. For gods sake the man recorded a full live album in a prison where the audience were all inmates. All the higher ups at the record company were against it but he did it anyway. Live at Folsom Prison went on to become extremely popular and won him a Grammy. He was extremely good at connecting with people! That why his fan base is all over the place, young or old, rock or rap or country…. Doesn’t matter! Everyone loves Johnny!

Great reaction, Gents! Johnny Cash was born poor and lived a very hard, painful life from the get-go. Fame, success and money did nothing to alleviate that. He had issues with the law and addiction. That's why he sang and preformed for the oppressed, did live concerts in prisons. He connected with the down-trodden. I think he saw his wife June and his Faith in Jesus as all that kept him going in his later years. Did he think let them down somehow? Such a great, yet tormented man. Much respect.

Joee, the best way to look at this song is in two ways; The Young Man and the Old Man. The original version of this song by Trent Reznor and NIN, is about a young man dealing with Substance Abuse. The Johnny Cash version of this song is that same man decades later towards the end of his life. He looks back on his life and realizes that all the mistakes he made and all the pain he went through, even the Substance Abuse, he would not change anything because it's what made him who he is/was. He accepts his past and embraces it because it was part of the journey to who he became. "If I could start again, a million miles away. I would keep myself. I would find a way."

He has distinct phases and sounds: early on, he was near rockabilly and kinda moved into just a real, stark, edgy, minimalist country. He had a several year period in the 70's where he was produced much more like big time country, but that doesn't mean that he always cooperated with the industry very well. Establishment country kinda booted him out in the 80's. Then he put out several albums with producer Rick Rubin in the early 90's, the era this song is from. He did songs by people like Tom Petty and Soundgarden...
