What especially pisses me off about Nicki Minaj is that she comes from a shitty house hold to the point where she could be considered nothing and rose to the very top of the music industry and that's amazing, but now she's become nothing more than a hypersexualized gimmick. One of your best and most insightful reviews. I personally loathe this song so I could not imagine that, at the time of its release, people were championing this song as a feminist piece, let alone a positive piece for women to enjoy. Mind you, being a man and all, i'm not one to say what is/not empowering but I never expected anyone to claim this song fell under that definition.
@Thomasmemoryscentral9 жыл бұрын
2014 apparently had tons of embarrassing moments for feminism. Between those thinking this song was good and freaking out over a dumb party song called Literally i Can't, its more proof why more don't take this seriously anymore. Props to Rap Critic for that joke revolving around being eaten out with grillz. What was ever the deal between fancy mouth wear?
@crazyluigi66649 жыл бұрын
+Thomasmemoryscentral I think the deal was more of the impressionable youth thinking that having your teeth being completely covered with jewelry is considered cool. I should know because I was one of those people that thought that kind of way with the grills in one's mouth was cool back when I was middle school and a bit of my freshman year of high school.

+Caz I'm actually impressed with her . . . not exactly as a feminist icon, but as a shit-stirrer (which in a lot of ways is in the service of feminism, however unintentionally). Nicki portrays whatever character she fucking wants to, without giving a shit whether she's a positive role model or a "good girl" or whatever. Feminists (particularly white feminists) loved this, and gave her a lot of pats on the head for being a good little Beyonce-lite and not needing no man . . . until she comes out with stuff like this and "Hey Mama," which pissed all the white feminists off, because you can't be and empowered woman and enjoy male attention, or at least not in the way Nicki's doing it. In a lot of ways she very much became the epitome of "angry black woman" as well as "video hoe," both obviously derogatory terms white feminists often use to denigrate women of color. I don't know how intentional any of this is, obviously -- I haven't really seen any interviews with her discussing her relationship with white feminism -- but I love the fact that she's able to piss off everyone in every direction. She's a skilled player of the media with (in my opinion) extremely catchy songs, and the fact that she is impossible to fit into a box makes me love her more.

TBH, I love when Critic talks feminism. He brings up so many great points :D also, in regards to 6:35, what's empowering to one person might not be empowering to another. For example, while some women may feel empowered by wearing makeup and revealing clothing, others might feel more empowered by just being in sweats with their hair tied up. And while some may feel most fulfilled in the workforce, others may feel that way as a stay at home Mom. None of these choices are wrong/better than others; imho as long as people are doing what they TRULY want to do with their lives and aren't doing it because they're being told to, then that's okay in my book. It's about having the freedom to choose. But that's just how I interpret feminism

It's obvious that in this day and age artists just suck and they have to sexualize everything just to sell albums. Where is the time when artists actually wrote their own lyrics and have lyrics that actually made sence. When there was no autotune and song lyrics actually told a story of the artists life or had a message.

Feminists can Be Sex Positive or "Pro-Hoe"As alot of of us playfully call it these days.Our thoughts is that if you want to be sexual you can and if not you dont have to but it should always be your choice.I dont think most of us Mind men taking enjoyment from public forms of entertainment,The problem is when they Believe it is their right to decide to how far we go or how we must be at all times with our sexuality in relation to being sexual.Example: If I were to twerk And a male enjoyed looking that is fine(Unless said otherwise).It would be a problem if i didn't give him permission to take the step to touch me,Or if he believed it was his choice or I should listen to him on how far i do or dont go in relation to my body not on him. Man, I love this review. This song is freaking terrible. I hate it, and I don't get how anyone, especially Todd in the Shadows, could even say that this song is a guilty pleasure. You say this song just makes you wanna go listen to Baby Got Back, but this song ruins that song for me. I don't wanna hear either of them ever again.
@cannibalisticrequiem9 жыл бұрын
I wholeheartedly agree, expect for never wanting to hear Baby Got Back ever again. My nostalgia goggles are on tight enough to the point that I can still enjoy the song; but I can understand why someone would hate it because of Anaconda. The main issue I have with Todd being so forgiving with this song, is his hypocrisy when he compares it to Meghan Trainor's All About That Bass. He gets on Trainor's case because AATB is 'juvenile', even though Anaconda is equally so. He rips on AATB for having a skinny-shaming verse in her song: "I'm bringing booty back, go ahead and tell them skinny bitches that", but then he lets Nicki's " fuck them skinny bitches" chant at the end of the song slide. He calls Meghan out about how the song champions the idea that men like curvy women and that she needs a man's approval of how she looks, but looks the other way when Nicki raps about "he love my big fat ass", and that that makes her attractive. But Nicki gets a free pass because, she's Nicki and somehow, only she can be that controversial. I find that complete and utter bullshit. If you're going to call out one artist for what you consider an offensive song, then you have to call out all other artists that make similar songs with that message you don't like. You don't get to pick and choose because you expect something of one artist, so, it's okay because it's that person. That's a shitty excuse.
@Thomasmemoryscentral9 жыл бұрын
+cannibalisticrequiem Todd did put Anaconda as both an honorable and dishonorable mention for his 2 year end lists of 2014 but honestly, his agreement on being a bit more soft to it compared to every other worst of list or review trashing it so is the most confused I've been with a reviewer since Mues adding Chandelier in the top 5 of his worst of 2014 list.
@Thomasmemoryscentral9 жыл бұрын
+cannibalisticrequiem All About That Bass was the best out of all the songs that mentioned butts and it bugs me when even reviewers like Todd give it crap. Like these were your other options:1. Booty (remix)-JLO ft Iggy Azalea. This was how the chorus went:"Big Big Booty, what you got a big booty"2. Wiggle-Jason Derulo ft Snoop Dogg. Here is the chorus:"Wiggle Wiggle Wiggle""Wiggle Wiggle Wiggle""Wiggle Wiggle Wiggle"Also let's look at one of Derulo's and Snoop's lines:Jason: "Patty Patty cake with no hands. Got me in this club making wedding plans"Snoop: "Then I take it out and wipe it off. Eat it, ate it, love it, hate it."
@cannibalisticrequiem9 жыл бұрын
***** Exactly! Why hate on Meghan Trainor so much when there are other celebrities male and female, producing songs about big butts? I just don't get it. At least Rap Critic brings up better critiques against Anaconda that don't revolve around, "it's just another song about big, fat bootys".
@cannibalisticrequiem9 жыл бұрын
***** The thing about that is, Todd didn't really complain about Trainor's voice. He just hated the song on the principle of, "she's skinny-shaming, so that's not cool" and "she's promoting the idea that you need to look a certain way because men prefer a certain body type over all others". Both decent points, but the problem I personally have with that, is that it's hypocritical. As I mentioned before, Anaconda puts forth the same messages that All About That Bass does, and yet Minaj gets a pass in Todd's mind, because "it's Nicki" and it's expected of her. I call bullshit on that notion, because it's not cool to criticize one artist and not another, when they're putting forth the same message.

Nicki is a good person only outside the music industry. I makes me so sad that when she's so nice in public, but she has such horrible songs out in the public. This has to be the very bottom of the barrel for her. I have witnessed people trying to say that this song is a lot greater than it actually is, but it's not. Songs like this make the female race look worse, not better. This song is about women being playthings though we're not. Look, I may not be an active feminist, but I do believe that women deserve to have power that doesn't involve looking like a naked cow in front of the cameras.

Not even Nicki body-shaming slim women at the end was a "no-no". This song somehow made her into a feminist icon and that hasn't even changed when she openly supported her brother charged with a rape of a child. Her mush-mouthed little girl delivery is strange, considering she can often rip through complex lines. And the outer has her saying "bitches in the clu", no B at the end. Both are annoying and weird.

I'm probably going to be burned for this but..... I actually like this song. Like, really like it. Not in an ironic way, I genuinely think it's a fun song. Even though it's obvious that this is nothing more than a hollow, shameless attempt to gain more fans through needless sexualisation and meaningless lyrics, I still like it.

I find this song hillarious. I think that might be a reaction to the overplay though.

when I first heard this chicks music on the radio or something I thought she was a rapping white girl lol.. The way she raps reminds me of a valley girl or something.

I used to love this song lmao, especially the crazy cackle at the end. I saw it as her showing that she's undoubtedly sexy and sexual, while also refusing to make that sexiness appealing and palatable (by doing stuff like the hyena cackle). So it was like, Yeah I'm hot but I'm not an object, I'm in control of my own sexuality and actually I'm kinda weird underneath all the body! etc. I also thought it was a twist on how men talk about women, by reducing Troy/Michael to objects by only caring about their dick/money and exploiting them for it, using those men the same way a misogynistic man would use a woman (which felt revolutionary to my 21yo mind). HOWEVER, knowing what I know now about Nicki Minaj, I was definitely reading too much into what is essentially a cash grab pop song, and I think you're right that (if she was attempting to empower/liberate) she missed the mark and ended up doing the thing I thought she was trying to satirize. Hindsight 20/20 ! (also I know this video is 9 years old at this point lol, I'm just binging your vids at the moment and am addicted to giving my 2c!!)

The only thing I dissagree with here, is when she raps about having sex with guys and getting expensive clothes, shoes etc. for it. In my opinion it works because its Nicki, and she isnt dependant on men to get those things. She can buy all that stuff on her own, and she is making a lot of money by herself, men for whatever reason are willing to give her expensive things and luxurious living if she has sex with them. In a ''classic'' narative its viewed as a girl giving up her precious sexuality that is to be saved and handled with care to a man who gives her material things he places no value on, but she cant get any other way, therefore shes looked down upon. But in Nickis case, she allready has the money they do, she doesnt need them, but she knows she can get more from them, so she takes it.

+Ur TheDuke exactly! i literally just got into a argument about this. and i told her im not saying women cant have sex but dont you think it's sad that women are only known for sleeping their way to the top. or we only pay attention to women who take nudes selfies rather than looking at women who own businesses without blowing a ceo . its honestly very upsetting and for a women to say that they respect themselves or show off their body because they like it is a lie. you do it for men you do it for approval and when someone says no eww why do that you feel ashamed and want to pull the bully card .

11:50 - 12:00 Halarious yet so true. Spray whip cream and deep throating bananas is not what comes to mind when I think of feminism and it definitely should not be! What are people thinking?!?! Anaconda being pro feminism seems hipocritical at best.
@isaiahadams19964 жыл бұрын
One of my biggest pet peeves is ladies who claim to be feminists but aren’t real feminists. Especially those who go clubs, twerking to music that degrades women and only fight for superiority over men. But for those who actually are feminists and fight for gender equality, I give you props for that.
@blissfulinsomniac57113 жыл бұрын
Wait, so...twerking to a song makes you not a feminist? Since when do you have to take songs seriously? Club jams are club jams, and most aren't listening to the inane lyrics...

At least Mix-A-Lot’s message could be taken as somewhat empowering as he’s saying you don’t need to be stick thin to be beautiful (yes it’s to him but still it’s more empowering than Nicki)

I think she was trying the "using men for sex & money" a trope that female artists go to. It is "empowering" in the sense that it posits men as a means to an end, just how male rappers do the same with positing women as a means to an end. Sure, she's being a dummy/bimbo, but she's getting stuff out of it. I agree about your "queenpin" comment- that makes much more sense. I don't think positing a certain body type as attractive/sexual is "objectifying" them -especially with Sir Mixalot. In fact, the term "objectifying" is overused. I mean, if Lizzo did the same video, would you say the same?
