I personally think that all the calls for "change in mentality" or "change in society" are useless. I'm saying this because r@pe isn't a new phenomenon, and it certainly isn't limited only to India. Every country faces this problem and everywhere there's a call for change in society's approach. But nowhere it seems to be working. That makes me believe that this is a problem which can't be solved by mere protests or boards and placards or laws and punishments. It needs a mass level approach starting with abikity to understand one's own emotions and regulate them coupled with education after a thorough understanding of what drives people to commit such crimes. Guilt tripping everyone and becoming apologists for something which we won't even dream to commit is a counter productive approach. Most people would become defensive and would box themselves in denial. And this isn't just about men. When women themselves say that r@pes happen because women are interacting more freely with men these days, you get to know that it's not just men who are responsible. Women are with equally dirty hands. Look at the comments of WB CM Mamata Banerjee after the incident. And trust me, no solution will come out of stricter laws and punishments. It will only be used as a weapon for the innocent guys. The only solution is to take a scientific approach in understanding the mindset of a criminal, identify trigger points and then design an educational curriculum around it which teaches kids from a small age on how to identify their own emotions and urges and how to control them.
