There was a scrapped episode all about Mikey and Ralph’s relationship as they grew up. Implying that, as little kids, they were extremely close, but as they grew up, it distanced. I imagine it was Raphs overprotectiveness that pushed Mikey away.

I'm not ashamed to say that Rise Raph is maybe my favorite iteration of his character (along with Rise Donnie). I love how he's still that sometimes hot-headed and fight-loving character, but this time he's also big loveable meat-head with a heart of gold. His care and need for his family has an incredible duality to it, to the extent where it can be both his strength (teamwork in fighting) and his weakness (Raph alone). Unlike the previous version, this one really shows that he cares, and has more of a reason for his moments of frustration and hot-headedness without the excuse of it being his "personality" (not that that's entirely what the previous versions were, either). It's kind of refreshing to see a character of his type portrayed with an expression of caring that feels more genuine and direct and doesn't always rely on sarcastic quips or passive-aggressive remarks for the majority of his screen time.
@viperizer0 Жыл бұрын

I think an argument can be made that Rise!Raph bears most of the effects of parentification. I have to assume that he basically acted as a parent to his brothers all throughout his life (since Splinter in the show was pretty absent for the most part), and as a result, he never developed or learned healthy ways of handling his emotions and stress. I really like this angle when it comes to his anger, as it's very realistic, and it highlights a part of sibling dynamics and psychology that isn't touched on in media (aside from Encanto).
@viperizer0 Жыл бұрын

Raph was the sole reason I watched Rise in the first place. Which is ironic since I HATED him in the previous adaptions. He suffers too much just to protect his family…and his brothers tend to not realize that. And I just learned about the scrapes episode between him and Mikey’s friendship and hurt that “they’re not they close” when the series shows them close. There are times where I want to see Raph just leave true family (not forever though). He needs more friends, not just April and Buddy (Franken-Foot). “No matter how much I cover for you guys, I will always be beneath you.”
@viperizer0 Жыл бұрын
I really like your points here. Honestly the feeling like they’re not close with their younger sibling is a feeling that older siblings can typically get. Personally, I know that my sister feels that way about me and my brother so I’m kinda sad that that got scrapped.

Honestly, people saying his character is so different then in the previous versions. That's just not correct. He had also been crazy scared of things in all previous versions. Always cared about his brothers and was actually pretty sensitive because most of his frustration was with himself. It was Leo being the leader which allowed him to walk away angry. Which he otherwise wouldn't do. And that is basically the Raph we have right now with Rise. One of my favorit scence of all TMNT so far is when they are all caught by an agent and put on stretchers in the 2003 version. It's not easy to see but when that guy tries to slice up Mickey, Raph is so out of it that he doesn't even realise he was saved by Splinter. He closed his eyes so hard and couldn't even look at it. And Splinter had to actively tell him Raph its okay. For him to realise that he was saved. Dude had always been a softie. Just harder to see.

That’s completely fair! In this version of him, though, I think it’s easier to see which makes people think it’s different when it’s not necessarily different… it’s just shown differently! Thank you for your comment!

I never realized that there was a reason why Raph would talk in the third person and it fascinating to think that it’s to take the blame on himself and I think he still has the temper as he does snap at his brothers sometimes like during the tree scene or the pizza puffs episode but given his size if he did express that anger his younger (and much smaller) brothers would get hurt from it so he suppresses it giving him something more to weigh him down.

I’m glad you left a comment and are getting help for it! As for the dynamic poses bit… hmm… well, it kind of depends on where you are in your art journey. The first thing I can really suggest is looking up references for them. If you see dynamic poses or draw the figure enough, it becomes easier to imagine it in different poses. My second suggestion is to use shapes. I.e. block out your pose before doing this. Honestly, a lot of it is trial and error for me. My third suggestion is drawing a ground plane. If you draw where you want them to stand, it makes it easier for you to put them in that space. Sorry if this doesn’t really help, I’m not the best at teaching stuff 😅 Thank your for your comment anyway! It really means a lot!

I loved how they didn't TAKE stuff away from Raph but more. changed it's focus. Raph's character to me has ALWAYS been an overprotective sensitive Big brother. Even in 03 when he was 'the hot head', i felt that a lot of his anger came from the stress of not feeling he was good enough to take care of his family- that overprotective streak rivalled but was very different to Leo's own protective tendencies. Plus, 03's Rise used to knit...KNIT! 12's Rise used to show his more vunerable side with Spike and Chompy, he couldn't really express himself to his brothers but he was always able to take comfort in his little buddies. In Rise, he still has that- just because it's more obvious doesn't make it NEW. I LOVE getting more of Raph's sensitive side but also that as the oldest without anyone to look to up/ aspire to be like, he gets the breathing space to be honest with it- even going as far as his cute pjs, letting his brother's see how Mrs Cuddles freaks him out, and openly having teddies- I honestly think it's glorious what they did with Rise's Raph and I just wish we had more seasons so his relationship with his brothers, in this dynamic, how him now being the 'biggest' brother gave HIM the responsability of leader, and how that stress of having to be the one with the plans and looking out for them 'because if I don't we could all end up dead'- and that is terrifying for him- it's something we see through every version of Raph- How much he fears losing his brothers. I also love how Raph's signature 'Attack first, ask questions later' is still there as well. He would rather go in and use brute strength to smash things LIKE A BOSS, rather than do the calm and logical approach....Gods I love Raph. and I REALLY love Rise's portrayal of him. I'm glad we got to see him like this- not a different Raph but more like the same Gem with a light shone through it at a slightly different angle - the Raph-prism if you will X3

I do like this version of Raph more. In too many iterations, Raph verged on a trouble-maker; a bully who wanted to be in charge and made life difficult for Leo, just because. What would happen if Raph really were Leader? Well, he wouldn't necesserily be a better leader, as we reguarly see Leo taking lead with strategies that rely on Raph doing exactly what he can be relied upon to do, but they would always have somebody to catch them when they fall. Most of the reason Raph has wound up a parental-figure, is thanks to Splinter being a Mid-Level Dad. It's the most obvious Family Issue in the show, because it affects all of them. It doesn't take much to see that the relationship between Leo and Donnie is a reflection of the relationship usually seen between Leo and Raph. Only this time it's not them contending for Splinter's approval, or vying for leadership. This time, they're contending for the validation they don't get from their father; now seeking it from Big Bro Raph. Leo with his Inferiority Complex will push buttons any way he can, so since he can't get at Raph or Mikey, he goes for Donnie, because Middle Brothers are allowed. This Passive-Aggressive Donnie ain't gonna put up with no crap, and retaliates with ideas like putting lasers in the roombas ("Smart Lair"). Leo is fine with this because more noise means more attention from Raph. Donnie is also fine with more attention from Raph. And that's how we wound up with the Disaster Twins. Raph sometimes says "I'm the oldest/I'm the strongest, that makes me the leader", or along the lines. Funny thing is, that's NOT a good reason to be leader, and I'm certain the writers knew it. Raph isn't in charge in Rise! because he's an amazing strategist or fighter. He's in charge because as Splinter spends more and more time in front of the TV, he's gradually become the closest thing to a father figure his bros have, and that's not something a 15 year old should be. I have a theory about Raph's chronic fear of being alone. While an easy option is PTSD from being lost in the sewers as a baby, and a possible trigger for the realisation, I also think that a 'slow burn' is a possibility. Raph spent SO much time looking after his brothers, that he simply can't bear to be NOT looking after somebody. Who is he, if not his brothers' guardian? What is he worth, if he can't keep them safe? His brothers are aware of what happens, but not the 'why'.

Honestly, being a TMNT fan the whole life and having read and seen every franchise media I got to say Rise Raph is not only heavily overlooked but is also one of the best iterations of this character along with 2012 and IDW(for the most part) ones. It makes me both mad and sad older fans like Raph not for his traits, but more for his brute role of the team. Like sure, Rise Raph is much more friendly and socially comfortable, but it's not something that was created just to make Raph an OC. 1987 Raph was this way too yet he's mostly universally loved for sassy comebacks and fourth wall breaks. Having sais and liking violence is cool, but I think we can agree we love Raph the most for his caring and protecting of his family. Even Michael Bay kinda understood that when Raph was spilling out how much he loves and cherishes his brothers. I hope he would be given some tools to play with his story arcs in the comics.

Like again, it's that stupid fanbase mindset of wanting nobody other than Shredder, and Krang thanks to 87 show as the main villian. Nevermind the fact that aside from Baron Draxum we had other major baddies like Lord Dregg, Mr.Null, Agent John Bishop, Dragon Lord and some more.

So I"m working on a speech project about Raph's leadership and I'm trying quite hard to find evidence and episode moments where he does show leadership and how it affects the people around him
@viperizer0 Жыл бұрын
Hm… well, let’s see. I have some examples but they may not be examples of GOOD leadership… if that makes sense? The first one I can think of is in paper tsunami when raph tries to lead them and ultimately fails with his plan… causing Leo to have to step up. Another example is in pizza puffs. The whole episode we see him having to baby his brothers in a sense, even after saying he wasn’t going to help them. They still depend on him. I feel like that’s the difficult thing about raph. He isn’t good at plans. He isn’t good at coming up with solutions to a problem that isn’t simply smashing… But his brothers still depend on him a great deal. He takes care of them. He’s the one who protects his younger brothers. Which is why leo eventually gets made leader. Raph had no choice in becoming leader. He was simply the oldest so everyone naturally ended up depending on him. In a scrapped ending of the movie, raph asks leo if he thinks raph ever wanted to be the leader. No. He had to be. Sorry if this doesn’t help too much? I’d say go looking in more important episodes and possible the movie for these moments. They can be hard to catch sometimes but it’s really worth giving a second glance.

People who knew Raph to be an angry one, in the TMNT comics, he was extremely violent, and loved killing, including the foot clan. The turtles were trained to kill Shredder and unlike Leo, Donny and Mikey who had duty to kill if necessary, Raph in the other hand loves killing and is extremely brutal. I can see comic Raph just brutally killing foot clan members but I can’t say for Rise Raph at all.

Yeah... they're definitely different tone-wise. So I definitely can see how that can change the perspective.

@@viperizer0 well, if Rise Ralph’s personality is like Comic Raph?
@viperizer010 ай бұрын
@@nishchayjain1121 hmmm. I’m not going to lie, I haven’t read the comic, but I don’t think Rise raph would kill unless truly necessary. I think personality is interesting because I guess that can prove that you can have a similar personality yet different ideals from a person.

@@nishchayjain1121I wouldn't say Mirage comics Raph liked killing people. Sure, he liked to take off his steam beating some thugs, but he was never bloodthirsty and would even often stop Leo from doing something like that.

!LONG @SS TEXT! (Because my tmnt phase has come back and I love rottmnt 💀✋🏿) I always wonder why raph has so many personalities som people say it’s something traumatic happened to him in the past or it’s just for the jokes even one said it’s d.I.d (different personalities disorder) I just wanted to hear your input on it I could be the stress that makes the personalities for different situations idk myself but what do you think about it? Like when he is alone he turns to Savage raph which I don’t think is normal for a person to be paranoid and fighting just because you’re scared yes almost eating your enemies starting a fire in the sewers and attacking your brothers it’s not really that normal 😅 (but I loved your mikey vid and I love this one to your very good at analysing the characters 💅🏿)

Hm. Well, in certain situations and certain lifestyles… there are ppl who use this as either a coping mechanism or have it come in as a side affect as trauma. So I could definitely see the traumatic thing happening! Having to take on the leadership old as such a young age could have divided his mind into different states as well. It could be him simply separating himself to “share” the burden with someone. If that makes sense? I think it’s a way to separate his leadership self from different sides of him so that they don’t intervene perhaps? That’s just a short look at it… thank you so much for your comment! And same, I am obsessed with rottmnt lol.
