Do you understand how impossible that is? Unless you take away all player agency and just say “Nuh uh you, er, you just lose all those powers and that ending doesn’t matter lol” then you CANNOT continue the story

All the while it could give him some measure of plausible deniability if/when it fails because Raphael would make for a great scapegoat. If they succeed, yay. If they fail, his arrogant offspring will have had a powerful life lesson: don’t get a spark of divinity and think you can take on someone with a much bigger spark. Or hell, maybe Mephistopheles doesn’t think that it will succeed at all but wants a front row seat to seeing his petulant son get humbled.

People here are really underestimating Mephistopheles. He's a devil, he probably is just waiting for his son to cause chaos so that many other will die in the process, and when Raphael burns out in the fire of his own ambitions, meph will be there to fill a lot of the power vacuum.

That's the thought I had, people seem to forget that Mephistopheles owned the crown originally and hadn't considered the following: 1. He either can't topple Asmodeus with the crown directly or if he did the victory would be pyrrhic and short-lived. Evidenced by him remaining second only to Asmodeus for so long despite his abilities. 2. It is extremely suspect that some random diabolist managed to break into Mephistopheles' vaults undetected and lift the crown. Not only that, Mephistopheles didnt send anyone after it? Sounds like bait to me. 3. Given Mephistopheles' proclivity for killing his most competent servants out of fear that they will betray him, making overtures of peace to his son only to kill him when he has exhausted himself would be par-for-the-course. Just like you said, it would allow Mephistopheles to fill the gap and muster what remains to fight Asmodeus without the fear of being outmaneuvered.

Yeah I agree with you. The crown of Karsus is powerful but I don't think Raphael can even come close to beating asmodeus with it. Asmodeus basically had Tiamat as a pet, is on par with a God himself, and multiple good aligned gods would probably come to his aid since he keeps the demons of the abyss in check, keeps the devils busy with the blood war, and helps ensure bad people who go to the 9 halls after they die stay on the 9 hells

Of course he could not end the Blood War, there are only 2 reasons why the demons had not being succesful in it, the first one is that the Abyss is infinite and also the demons, but only like 4 Demon Lords supoort the Blood War, not even the prince of Demons support because he is "Occupied", the second one is because Tiamat guards the entrance to the next layer, and Tiamat is a Goddess, if the Abyss starts to notice that something is threatening their realm they will unite forces (Take in account that the Abyss is infinite and only 665 layers have being discovered and recorded), and with all the Demon Lords and Princes united they will punch back Raphael so hard that he would wish to never knew anything about the Crown.

I love the implication that Karsus is in hell, its a clarification I think a lot of FR loreheads have always wondered after. I also love HUBRIS that a little bit of godhood is somehow gonna give him all 9 layers, how naive and perfect. Something I think too few storytellers in D&D do is really dig into Asmodeus' strategy of fomenting delusions of grandeur in his lieutenants. The boss runs a whole cosmological alignment without a single scrap of actual loyalty from even one underling, because he understands and manipulates *ambition*. We never will, because Raph taking the crown is obviously non-canon, but god I'd love to get some stories about the lord of the house of hope running into the bureaucratic brick walls of the hells. Zariel thought she could end the Blood War too, but she was nothing against the red tape of the arch fiend. Does a mere cambion really believe the Lord of the Hells *missed* his play for godhood? If he succeeds, its because Asmodeus *does not care*. What a great villain. So expansive and so small. Absolutely no notes.

I actually don't think that Raphael will be able to achieve with the crown what he wants to. I think that Mephistopheles would've used the crown if it were powerful enough to dethrone the Lords of the Nine Hells and unite them all under one ruler. And Mephistopheles himself is already an archdevil, while Raphael is a simple cambion with not even a quarter of the power that an archdevil has. I could be wrong with that theory, my knowledge on D&D lore and the workings of the crown + archdevils/cambions isn't that far spread, but I think Raphael would be in for a rude awakening when Zariel wipes the floor with him :'D

Everyone has already stated it but yeah, Asmodeus rules all of the Nine Hells. He has ultimate, unquestionable command of all devils. If he wishes, any and all devils including archdevils must obey his very command. They cannot resist. They can even be completely demoted to Lemures with a single thought. While he is in his domain, he rules all. Not even the gods themselves could challenge him there. Raphael saying this kind of makes out that he's actually just a complete idiot to even think of it. It doesn't matter how many rally to his side, they'll all be lemures in an instant if Asmodeus wishes it. Not to mention that he has the Ruby Rod and depending on which lore you go off, is actually a supreme being above even the gods themselves, that created everything in existence alongside his good counterpart. Also, the writing actually seems kind of lore inaccurate here. Raphael makes out that he would unite the hells and be able to overthrow the demons to end the Blood War but the Hells are and always have been united. If they ever rebel, it is swiftly crushed by Asmodeus. He rules the place with an iron fist. None can even think of opposing him. If Asmodeus cannot defeat the Abyss, no one can. And Raphael should understand that. It's not a lack of leadership or a lack of unity. It's the fact that the Abyss is literally factually endless. Infinite. More and more demons are made every minute. It is raw chaos imbued into pure destructive forces. It's the Abyss that lacks unity and leadership. If the Demons could somehow be united and the Devils weren't there to help fight them back, then literally all of the multiverse would perish without any hope of survival. But it's impossible for demons to be all united and hierarchical. It's against their very nature.

So even if you promise him it can you still not give it to him? If you just went “no fek off” and destroy it or give it to mystra, what’s he gonna do about it? With no soul pillars he’d be easier to fight *and* Orpheus/the emperor would help you out.

Ao has no power on the outer planes other than to drag the gods of Toril from them if needed. Now the crown being drawn from a fragment of Toril divinity originally MAY give him a hook, but I don't think he actually *cares*

I think the levels have been "reworked" along with the rest of the d&d world when the weave was destroyed and returned. I remember Neverwinter Nights could go up to a staggering level 40, and the damage you can do is decently high, but god damn you can do some INSANE damage with a "new age" level 12.

Genuine question: How Raphael is able to threaten us with invasion of mortal realm, if we signed a contract which explicitly forbidden it? Demons are shown to abide by the contracts they sign, even if they leave a thousand loopholes, however, this contract was pretty straightforward, and Raphy himself in the diaries did not mention anything about loopholing this deal.

It's devils that honor contracts, not demons. Demons don't give a fuck. If you are wondering why Raphael is still able to do all this despite signing a contract making it look like he's forbidden from doing what he wants, I refer you to Wyll's story. It's not "sometimes there is a loophole they can exploit", it's "there's always a loophole, sometimes they just choose not to exploit it". Obviously, with the power of the Crown, Raphael has no need to keep his head down and pretend like he abides by the spirit of any deals. Anyway, Raphael's deal was he would never dominate a mortal using the Crown. That does not preclude him from dominating all the Hells and then invading the Material Plane. It's barely a loophole, even.
