For a couple of reasons related to global warming, the Northern Hemisphere is warmer than the Southern Hemisphere, and therefore has more days of hurricane force typical low pressure systems in a year per 1,000,000 square kilometers of ocean than the Southern Hemisphere. In fact, the Northern Hemisphere has more hurricane force days than the Southern Hemisphere, even though the Northern Hemisphere has less ocean than the Northern Hemisphere. This difference between hemispheres is most extreme in the Atlantic Ocean. Even back in the 20th Century when global warming from CO2 was less extreme, entire decades would pass between hurricane strength storms in the South Atlantic Ocean, while in the North Atlantic Ocean the average was more than one such storm per year. Warmer oceans spawn more hurricane strength tropical low pressure systems, meaning that hurricane season will expand its time frame in the North Atlantic Ocean, and that weather authorities in Brazil will have to be more open to the possibility of a hurricane strength low pressure tropical low pressure system in the South Atlantic Ocean.
