A 20mm Tungsten bullet from the Phalanx is meant to hit the missile in the nosecone to disable it and throw it off course, or perhaps detonate it early. A 40mm anything will probably be fused to explode on or in front of the missile and pepper it and its fins with steel balls and fragments, killing it that way.

@Izno Iznogoud For frigate or larger sized ships (including merchants) the 76mm (or 100, 105, 127 and 155mm given the Navy) with HE/AP/intelligent ammo will do de job, also for most ground objectives such as bunkers shore defenses etc. But 76mm (along with some larger cals) will have AA ammo to engage flying vectors such as Drones, MPA, Helicopters and such... not really reliable against attack aircrafts but good enough for the rest. it can also strike smaller ships such as speedboats, there are tons of examples thru history of mid caliber fast shooting cannons killing small speedboats. 40mm is a strange cal... it used to be a great AA caliber, but its legs are too short to give a credible cover against the real threats of a modern fleet. On the other hand, his "CIWS capabilitys" are way better than 76mm, but nevertheless it has not enough rpm in order to provide direct hit efficiency, it can however hit a missile with airburst pellets proximity fused rounds, but those might not be enough of a punch against modern missiles, Missiles that are up to a degree armored with titanium. Those same rounds have a devastating effect against small boats and regular HE round can sink merchant/civilean/fishing ships, something that can also be done with more efficiency with 76mm against larger vessels, or at a lower cost and more efficiency by 20mm guns for smaller vessels. At the end of the day, 40mm is an average round, too big to be a small high rpm round but too short in range and punch to be a propper main caliber. Yes, it can perform AA, ASuW and CIWS missions, but none of these are going to be performed flawlessly, it is a good round for Maritime Patrol Vessels, nevertheless...

I read an excellent article from a navy insider: who wants to replace all CIWS on RN ships with 57mm guns. For example, a type 45 destroyer would have 3: one with a deck penetrating magazine with 1000 continuous ready rounds, and two on the wings-with 250 ready rounds. The reason is: logistics-only one ammo caliber and type, plus the advanced multi-fuse guided rounds-effectively putting out a guided missile twice a second. It's the most lethal gun and can replace everything except the big 5" deck gun, for engaging other ships and inland fire support.

I think that the best balance between CIWS and remote weapon system will be GIAT NEXTER 791 30mm cannon used by "Rafale" fighter jet. Excellent rate of fire, higly precise, very good range and high kinetic energy projectile. France naval officials have to think seriously on this concept, typically has germans did with their excellent "Masuser" 27mm cannon.

I'm wondering if it can use anti-cruise missiles as CIWS Back-up if Anti-Missile Laser not operating? use Airburst Frag to destroy missiles? if yes it is amazing true multi-role 40mm - Anti-Air & Anti-Missile, Anti-Light Vehicles, Anti-Light Boat - ie Patrol/Gunboat (maybe Corvette) & RIB Boat. it is perfectly combined for 2-4 turret on the boat with LMM on Both sides of the turret and 105mm Smart Guide Shell for Main Gun both on the frigate or Destroyer for Anti-ship and Land (Shore) Gun Support - even with Rail Gun to Anti-Ship in future. + VLS it is very Dangerous Combined.

Flak can do the same, and the reason that it would explode and send shrapnel is to increase the chances of hitting something essential. Sooooo you have a supersonic anti ship missile aimed right at mid section its counter measures have worked fooling and confusing the radar for the last 6/7 seconds, it’s now four seconds to impact It’s travelling at Mach 2.5 just ejected a decoy...... is radar, firing solution and command fire going to work....... I'm not a expert but I would have put the gun at the top of the ship that way gives you 360 degree rotation. If you ever hunted Birds. I think a shotgun type ammunition that disperses in a wide pattern.

Its radar tracks the outbound projectiles and corrects for any anomalies for the next rounds. Just like CIWS.

I doubt it, but then again hypersonics hitting a moving target is something that remains to be seen. Just a lot of propaganda. First Hypersonic fly high so are detectable from great distances giving you time to make course corrections. Forget internal guidance with plasma field. At that speed satlink has next to no time to transmit course corrections (ie for drones there is a few seconds delay between control room and drone), not to mention hypersonic have massive tradeoff between speed and manoeuvrability. That is why the top navies still use subsonic low flying and manoeuvrable anti ship missiles that come below the radar horizon, then change their angle of attack and boost in terminal phase giving very little time to evade or counter. In fact USS Stark was hit by Exocet and Phalanx CIWS could not stop it. This CTA 40 can shoot airburst rounds which should in theory destroy a missile more effectively than regular bullets, however targeting and reaction time still remains a question because range is fairly close at that point. This type of system is more useful to counter drones, helicopters or small attack boats. To effectively counter low flying anti ship missiles probably best to have some sort of airborne radar (AWACS or helicopter equivalent) to detect incoming and then launch a ship or heli based missile to destroy incoming anti ship missile.
