There was a concept back in the 80s for a mine that would pop up into the air, aim itself and fire a HEAT type molten metal jet through the top armor of Soviet tanks. Looked kind of like a frisbee IIRC. Don't know if any were actually built...

I love how they say "take out targets", when it literally means killing men. This type of sanitized speech allows weapons manufactures to separate the business of killing people with innocuous sounding words like "targets" and phrases like "taken out". "Taking out a target", means shredding human flesh with red hot steel fragments. After a nice "take out", what's left of the man/woman/child is scooped up with shovels and thrown into garbage bins.

They have the same style of ammo for the Bofors 40 mk4 naval cannon. But in that monster they have a 10 mile range, elevation to almost vertical and 300 rounds a minute. And the timing and direction of each shotgun is programmable. 5 appear per second above you, or inside you, dealers choice. The _57mm_ version has a 15 (I think?) mile range but is only 4 rounds per second. There are frigates mounting a mixed 3 of these...

Normally your average 40mm grenade shell is gonna be pure HE. These ones are just insane. Penetrating at least 65mm of RHA is no joke for a tiny little round like that, on top of the fact that it spray shrapnel in all directions as any other HE grenade would. This would be incredibly lethal against lightly armored targets like IFVs and armored cars. The guy even said chunks of the concrete wall flew 15m backwards. That’s a scary amount of power.

Is it actually 'programming' the thing, or does it start listening after the g-load of the shot and the antenna just cuts the signal after a certain amount of time? FYI, this isn't the type of 40mm ammo you fire off from an under barrel launcher, this is a much longer, heavier 40mm with a lot more room for explosive filler and advanced fusing, as well as enough propellant to throw it 4x faster, too, the us employs the same high velocity 40mm in the mk19

I don't know if anyone from Nammo actually reads this, but you should look at developing a similar airburst round in 30 x 113mm for the M230 chain gun. @automated8493
@automated8493 2 жыл бұрын
I know English isn't your first language but perhaps coming up with some wording first may have been best: "What's the advantage of our airburst ammunition compared to conventional ammunition? Well, first of all, we have airburst. You can program this round to airburst wherever you want it to airburst, so you can take out targets in defilade, behind corners, in trenches, over rooftops." You said Airburst 4 times in a few seconds. Maybe say something like: "The advantage of our rounds over conventional 40mm ammunition is the airburst capability. Using radio frequencies we are able to program the rounds to detonate at a precise distance. This gives the operator the ability to attack targets hidden behind cover such as trenches, corners or rooftops. Conventional ammunition relies on saturated fire to get shrapnel on target, with Nammo airburst technology you have the same effectiveness with just 1 round, giving you far more capability and endurance in the field."

@@Rob-vv5yn It's a dual purpose round. That means it's a jack of all trades. It's essentially a HEAT round that can be detonated mid-air. The fragmentation and explosive force compared to a regular HE/Airburst is lackluster, but it's still good enough and the ability to just shoot any target is what makes it great. A regular HE/Airburst would do nothing against lightly armored vehicles, so you'd have to get the hell out of there before they returned fire. But with this you just point and shoot at anything that isn't an MBT or heavy IFV and you know you'll take care of it. Infantry in the open, behind walls, inside buildings, or inside an APC... just point and "click".

An excellent improvement to the 40mm grenade, who's main benefit was already against targets in defilade or behind light cover like a brick wall. The addition of a HEAP warhead is fantastic as well, making it now useful against moderately armored targets and heavy cover like reinforced concrete walls.

Unless your house is huge, you likely wouldn't have enough range for the round to arm. It takes...15(?) Meters in flight before it would detonate. Unless these removed that safety feature in favor of the programmable bits. Even so, inside a structure, even if the shrapnel didn't get you, the overpressure would. Stick to buckshot. I prefer 4 buck in a magnum load lol *don't. I know he's joking, i know I'm joking about everything except the buckshot, so just... don't lol

Those programmed airburst rounds are scary! A lot of the same features on all sorts of weapon systems. Winning war is probably who is the best equipped. Radio and electronic jamming equipment more and more important. What would happen if an EMP where to be dropped? Could you still fire the gun? You still might want to have the option of analog/manual control. Electronics bring up the best in weapon systems. But once electronics are not feasible due to conditions. Than what?

Jamming is difficult as the programmer is high power over a short range. From the shooter's point of view there may be a problem, the programming pulse is aimed at the target, so in the modern connected battlefield, if the target has a radio detection it may detect and Identify the location of the signal before the grenade detonates. Although the target is destroyed, a connected tank could return fire...

Combined with the capability to detect and track many moving drones simultaneously and to engage them each in close succession something like this would be something close to omni-purpose self-defense system for combat vehicles. Still add a 7.62 co-axial for ammunition capacity for engaging soft targets in the open and hardly more would be needed.

Soft targets better start digging!!! What a job! There’s a lot of trust to stand down range of a weapon like that. Of course you can’t disclose this but I hope there are safeguards that keep unwanted RF from detonating a round in the weapon. It must activate as it is fired. Very cool!!

This is very interesting but i have one question...can these still punch through steel, metal, concrete etc....at longer distances, since these auto launchers have long range capabilities of between 1000-2000 meters? for example these were relatively close shots in the video. What about a shot to say a thin steel barrier but at 1200 meters which is well within the effective firing rage of the best auto launchers? For example. Let's say a special ops team has to destroy a ship in harbor ( i know there are far simpler ways, just making a scenario) Steel of ships' hull is relatively thin....so let's say they are perched on a hill 1200 meters from target & that is as close as they can get. Let's say they select auto fire & try to penetrate the hull, where the engines, the weapons magazine, or the gas tanks would be. Would this successfully penetrate?
@bobsmith5714
@bobsmith5714 2 жыл бұрын
For any sort of HEAT round using a shaped charge, the effectiveness is independent of velocity. HV ammunition only has a muzzle velocity of ~230m/s in any case. So as long as the round can hit the target, the penetration will be the same.
@USCFlash
@USCFlash 2 жыл бұрын
@@bobsmith5714 Thanks for the help. I always wondered why more special ops teams don't hit ships moored in harbors with tactics like this. The reason i mentioned this scenario was because i was discussing with a friend the possibility for special ops/sabotage raids by very small groups of ukrainian soldiers hitting some of Russia's harbors with naval assets, like Sevastopol. It might not make a big difference in the war, but being able to seriously damage a couple of russian warships in port, at a distance might be good for morale. Even moreso it might be much easier trying that against russian airbases. A couple of snipers with barrett anti-materiel rifles, & auto grenade lauchers stationed about 1500-2000 meters from some of the more open air bases could certainly destroy a bunch of planes as well as fuel depots etc. Prolly would be a one way ticket to eventual capture.....but that's a decent trade....one sniper for a dozen SU-34s. Of course it would have to be clandestine & the gear would have to be placed there before the sniper arrives since he cant carry it through customs 😉😉
