This is why completely blind reactions simply don't work. You need to do at least do basic research before you react. Paul Simon wrote the songs, and Art Garfunkel sang most of them with Simon providing Harmony. Although not intentional, asking "what did Garfunkel contribute?", is actually an insult. Again, unintentional. Garfunkel is the angelic voice in this song. Paul Simon's harmony kicks in at the third verse, and the combination is majestic. It's only my opinion but blind reactions are fine as long as you at least get some background on the names of the performers. You did the same thing with ABBA.

This song was released in 1970 when the Vietnam War was in full gear. This song speaks of friendship so strong they would lay down their life (the bridge) for the other.Even though Simon and Garfunkel had never been to war, they had a friend like one who would lay down their life for each other. In 1993 I went to D.C., my uncle who had been in the war asked me to please go to the Vietnam War Wall Memorial to trace on paper the name of one of his best friends who had died in that war. When I gave him the traced paper with his friend's name on it, he choked up and couldn't even hardly speak. They were that close of friends. I was blessed to have five best friends in my life who I know each of us would have died for the other. We were there together during the worst and best times in our lives. I pray everyone has at least one real friend like my uncle and five like I have in their lives, because my friends have been there for me and unless I was in the hospital, I was there for them. I remember waking up after a 7-hour long surgery to find 22 people in my room! It was 3 of those best friends, my family, and their families!

Scarborough Fair/Canticle. SF is a traditional English folk song from the Middle Ages. In the background Paul sings Canticle, which uses reworked lyrics from an anti war song he wrote previously, with a new melody mostly composed by Art. I grew up listening to this song and only recently learned that Canticle was a separate song in the background. I can only pick up on the lyrics when they continue after a line of SF has ended. You really should have the written Canticle lyrics on hand to know what he’s singing.

Art Garfunkel is singing the entire song. Paul Simon's voice comes in on the harmonies. Paul, perhaps one of the greatest poets of a generation, wrote the lyrics. This came out in the late 60s, and today we live in a world where this is an oldie, but back then when it was brand new, and people had never heard this melody line, it grabbed people and shook them, as it meandered its way through the story. Amazing song, from the text, the lead vocal, the harmonies, the instrumental arrangement, even the studio production with the _gravitas_ tone, the percussion sounding like distant artillery fire. Everything about it said here was a song that had an arc, from a quiet angelic voice, to an epic anthem!

‘Cecilia,’ is another song you’ve probably heard. “Celia. You’re breaking my heart. You’re shaking my confidence, baby. Oh Cecilia, I’m down on my knees. I’m begging you please, to come home. Come on home.” Paul Simon wrote the songs, and though Art Garfunkel is credited as the lead singer, I’d argue that they were a perfect blend of harmonies and melodies; making them both lead singer. I have sung first, second, and lyrical soprano. Each has its challenges. I’ve always enjoyed singing second and lyrical, best, but second is most challenging. So I know that Simon’s vocals are quite good. Harmony is the hardest part to hear, and get right. IMO. I believe they both had perfect pitch, and could play by ear too. Just when you think this song can’t get more ethereal, beautiful, and awe-inspiring, Paul joins in, and sends you soaring higher. Fun fact, Paul Simon was once married to Carrie Fischer. Princess Leia, herself!

I was born in 1951 and was a junior/senior in high school when Simon & Garfunkel really hit the big time with Sound of Silence. Paul Simon will be remembered as one of the premier songwriters of his time, he has written prolifically. They split up and started their own careers after some time. Art Garfunkel recorded a few songs but Paul Simon recorded a number of solo albums with all his original content, many which were big hits on the radio. He wrote many social commentary songs because the 60s were such tumultuous times in our country (civil rights, etc). Another of their big hits that I recommend you watch and react to is “The Boxer”, a huge hit for them. For guitarists, it uses the Travis pick throughout the song and thus is playable by many people.

A lot of people have covered this but no one filled it with emotional dynamics quite like Elvis when he performed it live in Vegas back in the 70s. Worth checking out.

Check out Paul Simon's album Graceland. I feel like that's when he was at his highest point as a songwriter, and the name was phenomenal, especially the bassist Bakithi Kumalo. Most people have heard 'You Can Call Me Al', but it's the lesser known songs like 'I Know What I Know', 'Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes', and my favorite 'Under African Skies' where his song writing really shines.

You keep calling the songs as classics. I remember when most of the songs were first released. I listened to them on my transistor radio, it was a.m. only. FM radio, came out much later.

I remember them days too! Simon and Garfunkel were one of my favourites.

Me, three! AM radio on the transistor radio as well. That is as long as my Mom didn't catch me with HER radio! 😅😂 I used to walk all around my neighborhood with that radio just listening to all kinds of songs and completely in love with 🎶 music! I used to get grounded for taking the radio without asking. She should have bought me my own! 😂😅😊😊❤

Such a beautiful song. They made an amazing pair. Art Garfunkel is singing this one. I saw this video when they were live at Madison Square Garden during one of their reunion tours. Breathtaking!

Art Garfunkel sang the lead here, with Paul Simon on the harmonies. Session musicans did the instrumentals. The song was used by George McGovern during the 1972 Presidential election.

Don't think this song had been released yet in 1872. 😁

Simon wrote but Art definitely sang it. Also, Sounds of Silence was written by Art about his friend Sandy Greenberg who is blind. The story of their friendship and the song will hit your heart deep. This song always makes me cry because it came out at a time in my life when as a teenager I was navigating the search for true friends. It makes me cry now as I see those true friends die one by one.

Didn’t write it … its a cover …it’s an old English folk song from the 1600s… the melody Paul uses was written by Mark Anderson 1947…

Heard it when it was newly released when I was a teenager. Thanks guys for rediscovering some of the greatest music ever! Haven't heard it for an incredible many many decades. The beauty power and majesty brought tears to my eyes like never before. I remember our choir playing this ,but nothing compares to ART GARFUNKEL'S vocal performance!

What I like about your reaction vids, is that you showcase the songs and artists that I grew up with. I'm 73, imagine all of these artists and their music debuting not just in your life, but the first time the World ever heard them. ---> The music has held its own and endured the test of time. Much of this music has only been heard by older and forgotten generations, and, for the most part, have been relegated to the annals of musical history. These Reaction videos reconnected me to feelings and experiences that exist mainly in the minds of an aging and disappearing population. ---> You brought back memories of laughter, and loving, with tears of sadness and joy, fleeting treasures that I thought I'd never know again. It really elevates my soul when your reactions and mine combine in a shared experience, and I see the music touch your heart the same way it touched mine. ---> It seems entirely inadequate to just say thank you, but, from the depths of my soul, THANK YOU!

Paul Simon played the guitar and wrote basically all the songs...you'll never see Garfunkle play an instrument...react to their live concert in Central Park....500,000 people showed up for just them !!!!

He didn’t write Scarborough Fair is and English folk song from the late 1600s the melody Paul uses was written by Mark Anderson in 1947 who gave it to Matin Carthy … we were singing the version Paul used in school in 1961…

And those 500,000 people went silent when they started singing. The cheering and noise was limited to in between songs or after certain New York lines.

Lots of people pointing out that Art is the singer and Paul is the writer and harmony on this song. And it’s true that gospel is a big influence. It was originally a smaller quiet hymn with just the two verses, but the crescendo at the end was added, and the snare is recorded down an elevator shaft for the reverb. Paul and Simon had grown up performing together in Queens and syncing their mouth movements for perfect harmonies, mimicking country western artists. The success of this song was part of what contributed to Art feeling like he could be successful as a solo act when they separated.
