'Hysteria' (the album) by Def Leppard in 1987 ultimately sold more copies (12 million) in the US than Michael Jackson's 'Bad' album (11 million) ... Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' album kept Def Leppard's previous album 'Pyromania' from the #1 spot on the US charts in 1983. However, it was not an easy task... Def Leppard's drummer Rick Allen lost his left arm in a car accident in 1984 and spent months working on a new electronic drum kit to relearn how to play drums w/ 1 arm and 2 feet. Def Leppard kept writing songs but sessions were problematic. In 1986, Def Leppard did some shows to warm up and got a huge reception... Then, producer Robert 'Mutt' Lange returned to help finish the sessions - he wanted 7 singles to promote the 'Hysteria' album. Released in 1987, 'Hysteria' reached #1 in the UK (they had not been popular in Europe before then) but the US was lagging... Def Leppard had not toured there since 1984 and they weren't selling out shows... The first single was 'Women'... and it tanked. Second single 'Animal' did somewhat better and the 3rd single 'Hysteria' pushed sales of the album to 3 million in the US. However, they needed to sell 5 million records just to break even and recoup the album's studio costs. 4th single 'Pour some sugar on me' was released in the Summer of '88 and it exploded in popularity... Def Leppard shot a video but it was so poor that they re-release it w/ a new live video on MTV... 5th single was a ballad - 'Love bites'... and it went to #1 in the US singles chart. 6th single 'Armageddon it' became a top 5 single as well as Def Leppard sold out arena shows across the world... their 'In the round' stage was revolutionary for their time (The band would play at the center of the arena instead of having a stage at the end of the venue) and Metallica would copy that stage set for themselves in 1991 forward. 7th and final single from 'Hysteria' was 'Rocket'... and it charted in the top 20 in early 1989 as Def Leppard wrapped up the tour. Unfortunately, it was also the last album and tour w/ Def Leppard's founding guitarist Steve Clark... He had abusing drugs and drinking excessively and after the tour, he was found in a coma in Minneapolis from heavy drinking... Numerous attempts were made to keep him in rehab as Def Leppard began writing a new album in 1990. Steve Clark's repeated relapses kept halting sessions... it got to a point where he stopped listening. So, the band made him an offer - take 6 months off... take off the pressure... and get better on your own... Steve Clark was found dead in his home in early 1991 from a mix of drugs and alcohol. Def Leppard was devastated but decided to finish their 5th album 'Adrenalize' w/ guitarist Phil Collen playing Steve Clark's parts on the record and it went to #1 on the charts in 1992.

I understand this comment but the band's musical roots is '70s glam band's, t-rex, slade, ect. They wanted to be in a rock band, and they loved harder rock too, it suited them to be able to get their foot in the door so to speak, I know rick savage is a huge queen fan and some of their songs have a queen feel to them. They did an album of 70s cover band's songs, not the huge hits like they had, but other deeper cuts that they liked, I'm not a big British 70's music fan but it actually was good, they have a brand new song out called " just like 73" it features Tom morello from rage against the machine, who I love, I thought I hated it, now I can't get it out of my head. They made a 2022 record called " diamond star halos" I wondered what the heck, recently I heard the t-rex song called " bang a gong, get it on" on the radio, it was a line from that song, mystery solved

@jacquesstrapp32194 ай бұрын
The talk box was invented in the late 60s. Les Paul demonstrated live looping in 1953. Every band you mentioned used the hell out of pedals and other processing equipment, especially distortion, delay, phase shifters and chorus. There were analog effects long before those bands formed.

Frampton...70's...talk box. Aerosmith used one as well...sweet emotion. But I get your sentiment and agree!
@jacquesstrapp32194 ай бұрын
@@jeffjones6221 The first experimental usage of early talk box tech was the Sonovox in 1939! It was used primarily for movie sound effect voices. Peter Drake recorded his first "talking steel guitar" album in 1964! The device he used was only loud enough to be used in the studio. Kustom Electronics introduced "The Bag" in 1969. Stevie Wonder was the first major act to use it in 1972. The first modern high-powered talk box was developed by Bob Heil in 1971 for Joe Walsh. Frampton got his first one as a Christmas present from Bob in 1974. Frampton had jammed with Peter Drake in 1970 and loved the sound. Frampton was well known for his skillful use of it, but he most definitely was not the first.

Look up and read the story of how the drummer lost his arm, and they gave him time to heal. Then they had an engineer come in and design a drum set for him to play with his feet and one arm. They never wavered, they waited for him to master the new drums and then they were even better. I was a huge fan of this band before the incident, and afterwards even more so. The true definition of family, and not giving up. Loyalty to its core!

This is my favorite Def Leppard song of all time and they have a lot of great songs. I wore this song out on cassette back in the late 80s. About experiencing real love, which I connected to believing in real love for the first time with my high school girlfriend.

I was a teenager in the 80’s and Def Leopard was my favorite band. Awesome memories. My wife is the girl I was dating at the time. I still love the hell out of her. Thanks for bringing back so nostalgia.

Suggestive lyrics… metaphorical lyrics… making love as in constructing love, which happens with physical and mental interaction. The dancers in the video represent the closeness and sharing.

The back and forth vocals, the way they layered the song together between the band mambers is what always stood out for me with Def Leppard. That and the fact that they just Rock! ❤😂🎉 Love Bites next please!
