One of the most iconic and epic opening riffs ever! Although inspired by his love for Patti Boyd (George Harrison's wife) the name Layla came from a 12th century Persian poem Layla and Majnun by Nizami Ganjavi that Clapton had read. It's about a young man who falls in love with a woman who is unattainable. This was an unbelievably big hit for Clapton and his group; it was played all the time on the radio. Such a beautiful song. Clapton was a genius.

In the spring of 1970, Eric Clapton recruited bass player Carl Radle, drummer Jim Gordon, and keyboardist Bobby Whitlock to form a new band "Derek And The Dominos." During the recording of their sole studio album "Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs," the amazing Allman Brothers' guitarist, Duane Allman, joined the band as a guest. Two versions of the song "Layla" have achieved chart success, the first in 1972 (ie, the Derek And The Dominos version), and the second, 20 years later, as an acoustic "Unplugged" performance by Clapton. The song was inspired by a love story that originated in 7th-century Persian literature and later formed the basis of "The Story of Layla and Majnun" by the 12th-century Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi. The book moved Clapton profoundly, because it was the tale of a young man who fell hopelessly in love with a beautiful young girl, went crazy and so could not marry her. The song was further inspired by Clapton's secret love for Pattie Boyd, the wife of his friend and fellow musician, George Harrison. Harrison and Boyd divorced in 1977, the same year that Clapton wrote another love ballad for Boyd, "Wonderful Tonight." Clapton and Boyd eventually married in 1979 during a concert stop in Tucson, Arizona. Harrison was not bitter about the divorce and attended Clapton's wedding party with his former bandmates Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney. Unfortunately, Clapton and Boyd divorced in 1989....Rock N' Roll.... The double-album, Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs, is THE double album you MUST hear to fully appreciate Eric Clapton together with the much missed Duane Allman. A classic!!!! "Why Does Love Got Be So Sad?", "Bell Bottom Blues, "I Looked Away".... The great tunes on this album go on and on!!!

As you have figured out, Eric Clapton is the lead singer of Derek and the Dominos and this is the original version of the song. The one you reacted to previously is the acoustic version of the song. Acoustic versions of rock songs became popular in the 80s/90s.
@guitarman10126123 сағат бұрын
It is Eric Clapton. At the time he was extremely famous and he wanted to record an album under an alias. He came up with the fictional band, Derek and the Dominos. In this song he was joined by Duane Allman, who played all that beautiful slide guitar.
@sgrabtune395019 сағат бұрын
Derek and the Dominos was an English-American blues rock band formed in the spring of 1970 by singer-guitarist Eric Clapton, keyboardist-singer Bobby Whitlock, bassist Carl Radle and drummer Jim Gordon. All four members had previously played together in Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, during and after Clapton's brief tenure with Blind Faith. Dave Mason supplied additional lead guitar on early studio sessions and played at their first live gig. Another participant at their first session as a band was George Harrison, the recording for whose album All Things Must Pass marked the formation of Derek and the Dominos, they only lasted one year from 1970 to 1971 The band's only full-length release, was the album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, "Layla" is a song written by Eric Clapton and Jim Gordon, originally recorded with their band Derek and the Dominos, as the thirteenth track from their only studio album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs (1970). Its contrasting movements were composed separately by Clapton and Gordon. The piano part has also been controversially credited to Rita Coolidge, Gordon's girlfriend at the time. "Layla" has, since its release, experienced great critical and popular acclaim, and is often hailed as being among the greatest rock songs of all time. Two versions have achieved chart success, the first in 1972 and the second 20 years later as an acoustic Unplugged performance by Clapton for the MTV series unplugged. In 2004, "Layla" was ranked number 27 on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time", and the acoustic version won the 1993 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song.

Derek is Eric. That's what was written on subway walls when they found out Eric Clapton was in the band Derek and the Dominos. At first Eric didn't want to stand out in the band but for "marketing reasons" the rest of the band insisted that Eric out himself as the lead guitarist/vocalist. Eric never wanted to be a frontman he just wanted to play the guitar.

This was Eric Clapton and Duane Allman with some other amazing musicians like Jim Gordon on drums and Bobby Whitlock on keyboards. This was recorded shortly after the break up of Cream. It’s about the heartbreak of Eric Clapton being in love with the wife of his best friend George Harrison. Her name is Patti Boyd Harrison and eventually she wound up marrying Eric Clapton. This album was originally released in 1970. The acoustic version that you are used to hearing came out in the 90s I believe. The entire album is fire from beginning to end and your ears would thank you explicitly for allowing them to hear it. This has my seal of approval. I was 15 years old when this album came out and I fell in love with Eric Clapton and his music from listening to it. The high pitched guitar is a collaboration between Duane Allman and Eric Clapton. You would do well to invest some time into the music of Duane “Skydog” Allman who did session work for King Curtis, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Herbie Mann and Bozz Skaggs. He died at 24 years of age when an 18 wheeler truck crashed into his motorcycle in Macon, Georgia. He made a heck of a lot of great music in his way too short life.

To me 1971 was the best single year of music but maybe that is because I just got back to the world from a couple of years combat in Vietnam. What did I learn? Just be you. Some will like it. Some won't and that is okay. The ability to accept being disliked is a super power. Most people can't deal with it very well, But the most satisfied among us learned that along the way.

This song was an absolute phenomenon in its day. There was nothing like it instrumentally and the structure shifting from heavy electronic to romantic acoustic piano, but blending perfectly. It was long, but thanks to the rise of FM radio we had access to music that today would never have a chance. The energy and emotion of this original track is so legendary, that when Eric put out the acoustic version, I just couldn't connect. To this day, I can in my head acknowledge that the acoustic is well done, it just doesn't hit the heart like the Derek version. The original is the masterpiece. And BTW - that amazing guitar, surprisingly is not Eric. It's Duane Allman.
@aaroncote675025 күн бұрын
It’s actually the original version when Clapton was with this group. Duane Altman from the Allman Brothers Band played the 2nd guitar then a slide guitar which is what made the high pitch sound. What sucks is that Duane played with his brother and multiple other bands but died in a motorcycle accident at 24 yo. So much talent and another who died too young.

I was a little surprised that you didn't recognize the singer's voice hare as belonging to the voice you heard on the first version you heard of Layla. Miss Pattie Boyd had many songs written about her, by George, Eric, and others including a Rolling Stone. George and the other Beatles met Pattie when they did their first feature film A Hard Day's Night, which you should react to by the way. This song has two of the greatest guitarists ever, Eric Clapton and Duane Allman, this is the original. The story behind this song is one of the most iconic in rock history ranking up with the stories behind, Hey Jude, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, the whole Who's Next album and the whole Rumours album. All of them are part of the Rock Legendarium. Derek and the Dominos only put out this one album, but what an album. No we watch reactions to see reactions, if we just wanted to listen to the music we'd just look up the damn song and listen to it. We, or at least I, watch reactions to see others discover the wonderful music we grew up on. I remember my mom being so pleased to see me listen to Glenn Miller "In the Mood" for the first time when I was young and being into it.

This is hands down the best version. He is shredding that guitar to pieces.

That "cutting" sound you're hearing is the slide guitar of Duane Allman. When playing slide, you don't press the strings down on the neck. Instead, you use a slide (usually made of metal, glass, or ceramic) to lightly touch the strings. This lets you play a note and then slide up or down to increase and decrease the pitch naturally the same way we naturally raise or lower the pitch of our voice. It's a style of playing that originated in blues but is also used in rock music, country music, and Hawaiian music, sometimes with a lap steel, dobro, resonator, or pedal steel guitar.

Duane Allman and Eric Clapton dual guitars.... epic

As others have said, Derek and the Dominos was a short-lived band (only one studio album) fronted by Eric Clapton and Duane Allman. I was in 10th grade when it came out, and even years later in college, EVERYONE owned it and played it all the time. And not just this song, but the whole album -- and it was a double album on vinyl, so it's quite long. THE WHOLE ALBUM IS THIS GOOD. You should check it out if you liked this song.

This is the original version, and this is Eric, he was part of this band. 🙂. You also, can check out Eric play the song with acoustic guitar on MTV unplugged. 😁

Derek and the Dominoes was Clapton's band after Cream and Blind Faith. This album version has Duane Allman on second lead shortly before he died in a motorcycle accident. Great album, great live album classic songs from a short lived band. They do a Hendrix cover of Little Wing. The whole double album is ear candy.

I love this song so much. I named my daughter after this song.

What young people don’t know, is that when this album was released, no one knew who Derek and the Dominoes were. Layla was super popular before Clapton finally admitted he was in the band, along with Duane Allman.

There weren’t that many effects available in the 70s. And the production, this is a great example of what supremely talented musicians and an innovative producer can do together. Brilliant. Patty Boyd was her maiden name, by the way.

"Layla"[5] has, since its release, experienced great critical and popular acclaim, and is often hailed as being among the greatest rock songs of all time. Two versions have achieved chart success, the first in 1972 and the second 20 years later as an acoustic Unplugged performance by Clapton. In 2004, "Layla" was ranked number 27 on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time", and the acoustic version won the 1993 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song.

Fun fact, Duane Allman came up with the 7 note opening riff. Its a sped up version of Albert King's As The Years Go Passing By.

Derek and the Dominoes is Eric Clapton’s band. Clapton wrote the song Layla. There is a story behind it and his unrequited love for Pattie Boyd, the wife of his friend George Harrison.

You should know that Eric Clapton was the only person to have been inducted into the R&R Hall of fame 3 times. Once with the Yardbirds, and once with Cream, and once alone

This is one of my favorite albums...ever...one thing people fail to mention is Tom Dowd was the producer...he produced MANY incredible albums..look into his catalog of accomplishments....a documentary of him called "the language of Music" is pretty awesome....thanks for reacting to this.

You don't talk too much I love seeing you pick up on stuff that we all know. It's amazing to see that the artist can communicate their story just through the music. You definitely should do some albums. You've got the chops to find the concept.

My neighbors know when I listen to this version. Think I first heard this in 1972 when I was 9 and was hooked on Clapton. Got to see him live in 1998.

"Layla" is a song written by Eric Clapton and Jim Gordon, originally recorded with their band Derek and the Dominos, as the thirteenth track from their only studio album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs (1970). Its contrasting movements were composed separately by Clapton and Gordon. The piano part has also been controversially credited to Rita Coolidge, Gordon's girlfriend at the time.
