John Lennon said that ELO was his favorite band to "carry on the torch" after the Beatles broke up and told Jeff Lynne that. What a Compliment!
@adamcashin40212 ай бұрын
and Jeff Lynne went on to be producer on the post break up Beatles singles, Real Love, Free as a Bird, and Now and Then (sort of), completing the circle. He also worked heavily with George Harrison on his latter material and both were members of the super group the Travelling Wilburys. Having worked with the surviving Beatles on the singles he then worked heavily on Paul McCartney's album serving as producer and performing on many of the tracks; Ringo was also drummer on the album. (and it contains as far as I'm aware the only McCartney-Starr credited song).

It’s a Vocoder. Vocoder. The vocoder was originally designed to aid in the transmission of voices over telephony systems. In musical applications the original sounds, either from vocals or from other sources such as instruments, are used and fed into a system of filters and noise generators.

@joyreno1034 it is...that's why I said a vocoder is to synthesizer as a talk box is to guitar. The keyboard player uses a mic to feed their voice into a vocoder vs a tube for guitar, but both allow the "instramanazation" (new word🤣🤣🤣) of your voice. Scrolled through the comments and didn't see anyone else mention it: this song was used in a VW Beetle commercial about 20 years ago. A young guy, straight out of college is hired in to work in a big office. Over time, he is ground down by the monotony of the job. At one point, he looks out the window, at the building across the street. He sees a young woman in the other building, looking out the window, as bored and disillusioned as he is. Then, he sees a VW Beetle convertible, and his outlook brightens.

The structure and the melody and also the kind of pipe hammer sound and the breathy huh, huh, huh are from two different Beatles songs, Maxwell's Silver Hammer and A Day in the Life respectively if I remember correctly. Fact, ELO was called the second Beatles back in the day by me and my friends.

And the electronic effect on the vocals - which you heard as "auto-tune" were a bloody revolution! I thought if you were going to find "cringe" it would be in the faux - operatic vocals. But I feel like you get the song! And there really aren't many songs that make this crabby old 60-year-old in a young punks world - this close to happy! And growing up with this song I had the same reaction to pretty face being a romantic love song, - immediately transmogrified into a parent's love of a child! Great video, i hope you do some more ELO soon!
