A lot of times I dislike PG live, just because I dont like when there are like a dozen of people on stage doing more of a theater performance. I know thats his background and was always part of his musical legacy. I just always get more out of the studio tracks when it comes to Peter Gabriel specifically. I usually prefer all bands in a live context. But yeah most people prefer the live version, definitely check it out. I'm just a weirdo. :)
@zzz7zzz929 күн бұрын
@unicyclepeon makes sense. I just think original recordings show what the song actually is, and was meant to be. Live shows then are representations OF that. And if it's a first listen, then live versions are distracting. But videos, in general, are distracting, and take away from the song listening. Early videos were silly and had nothing to do with the songs, they were just directors experimenting. Too many times, reactors are watching a video and are confused by it, etc. Which shows they aren't concentrating on the song. And then there was the phase in the 80s/90s of songs featured in movies, then the song's video would be mostly scenes from that movie. All just distractions from the song. And sure, there was a phase too, where songs were released for a movie too, but the music video still makes no sense if one never saw the movie.

Peter Gabriel was the lead singer of Genesis until 1975... Phil Collins joined Genesis on drum in 1970 and became the lead singer in 1976 after Peter Gabriel left the band. Peter Gabriel launched his solo career in the late 70's... He still tours as a solo artist. Phil Collins launched his solo career in the early 80's... he closed out his solo career in the 2000's and performed his final tour w/ Genesis in 2021/ '22 - Phil Collins had to sing sitting down due to health issues, while his son Nic Collins played drums. Genesis guitarist Mike Rutherford launched Mike & the Mechanics in 1985 as a solo project... w/ (late) singer Paul Young & Paul Carrack (vocals/ keys/ guitar) Genesis keyboardist Tony Banks also released a number of music projects outside of Genesis. Former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett still tours actively as a solo artist after leaving Genesis in 1977... as well as other projects.

Peter Gabriel has his own label Real World records which is primerily for world music. He has a long history of having world music artists and intruments on his albums creating the most amazing rhythms and sounds. He started the WOMAD world music festival. He once called his hits like Sledgehammer his haircut songs that keep the bean counters happy so he could get on with the creative stuff. In case you dont know already, Gabriel was the original singer with Genisis. When he left the drummer Phil Collins stepped upto the mic. The rest is history. I came across Gabriel in the early 80s and as an artist he has inspired me probably more than anyone else. David Gilmour and Kate Bush would be up there too.

Peter Gabriel is pure musical genius. For GENESIS... its one of those bands that were around so long, that changed so much, you could break it into two different eras. There was the original "Peter Gabriel/PROG ROCK" era, and yes Phil Collins was the drummer then too, but when Peter left the band they auditioned a ton of replacement singers and it turned out Phil was the best fit. Genesis very quickly evolved into the "Phil Collin/POP ROCK" era. Thats no dis on the Phil era, they made some equally great music but the differences between the two are stunning. Old Genesis were 30 minute prog-rock masterpieces, very eclectic... look for "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" for an idea. When Peter went solo, his music too changes quite a bit and he still collaborated with the original Genesis members for his solo career, Phil is famously on many of them. For fun, look up this same song [In Your Eyes] "Live" from his Secret World Tour, it will give you goosebumps, I promise.

Peter Gabriel is indeed a musical genius. As the original frontman of Genesis, he mesmerized audiences with his dynamic stage presence and distinctive voice. His solo career took his creativity to unparalleled heights, seamlessly blending rock, world music, and cutting-edge technology. His albums, notably the self-titled "Peter Gabriel" series and the commercially successful "So," showcase his innovative approach to music. Despite the commercial success of "So," his first four solo albums, often referred to as "Car," "Scratch," "Melt," and "Security," are essential listens to truly appreciate his artistry. Gabriel's passion extends beyond music. He co-founded the World of Music, Arts and Dance (WOMAD) festival and the human rights organization Witness, reflecting his commitment to activism. His contributions to music and human rights have earned him numerous accolades, including six Grammys and the Polar Music Prize. Favorites like "Biko," "San Jacinto," "Solsbury Hill," and "Shock the Monkey" highlight his profound ability to intertwine powerful lyrics with compelling melodies. His unique fusion of music, activism, and innovation makes him an extraordinary artist and composer.

Welcome to my wheel house. I have followed Peter since 1978 when I was 10 years old. I have seen him 10 times and met him once. While this studio version is a banger the live version from the Real World tour is next level and I highly recommend you react to the live version. For Peters first 2 albums Phil did the drums free of charge for him. The African vocals at the end are by Yousin Adour from Senegal. In the early 80s Peter started Womad and the introduction of African and Middle Eastern musicians into western style music. With the success of the SO album he built and created Real World Studios which signs ethnically diverse artists from around the world and promotes them. He also runs internships at Real World Studios in Bath England. Peter is recognized as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. Few can compete with his charitable work. His song Biko, about the assassination of Stephen Biko in South Africa by the Apartheid Government, is considered an anthem and has been played at the end of every single concert for the past 40 plus years. If you are going to talk about Genesis, though, you need to go back to before the Then There Were Three album. If you want a real challenge, try the 30 minutes of Supers Ready. Genesis and Gabrield are special to me. As a lifelong pianist, my stylings are heavily influenced by Tony Banks, and my vocal performances are heavily influenced by Peter. Go an check out anything from Real World live but be sure to watch the end with Biko. In 92 on that tour in Montreal the crowd sang Biko for over 10 minutes after he left the stage. They did not stop until they turned the lights on.
