Yes it is a cover, originally sang by Vickie Lawrence but Reba did it justice. This version thiugh is tough for first time with the video dialog covering up half the lyrics. Every Reba song is a banger. One you should check out is one she did with her back up singer Linda Davis. "Does He Love You" Love Reba's little smirk right at the end of the song, and the end of the music video will blow you away.

Bobby Russell wrote the song "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia": Album: The song was the title track and number-one single on Vicki Lawrence's 1973 debut album, The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia. Performance: Lawrence, Russell's then-wife, performed the song in 1972. Cover: Reba McEntire covered the song in 1991.

Another staple I grew up with here in Texas. She comes from a rodeo family out of Oklahoma. She had a lot of songs that were cutting edge for the time per say, covering some previously recorded songs. I don't usually like remakes but didn't know it when I was a kid when majority of her stuff came out and whatever Reba does is gold. It's hard to break down this song without hearing it multiple times first. She has connections to where I live. Her first ex-husband's mom lived in the same area as me a long time ago. In 1991, Reba's band was in a horrible plane crash killing 10 total and 8 members of her band. This song came out the next year. Another nugget, Kelly Clarkson married one of her son's I think from the first marriage. Kelly Clarkson is from Burleson, TX, where I live. We are close to same age but I never actually knew her. I did get to meet Reba's new band members in 93 in Nashville when I got to go on a family trip. Reba wasn't with them then. One last thing, Reba has a sister, Susie McEntire-Eaton, with phenomenal vocals. So there's all that you can look up.

There was a popular show on CBS, Carol Burnett Show 1967-76 or so. Vicki Lawrence was a recent high school grad that had a similar look to Carol. Often playing Carol's kid sister or daughter. Early 70s she put out a record that hit big, Lights, and never really sang again. Other story songs, by Marty Robbins, Bobbie Gentry -Ode to Billie Joe, Jeannie C Riley = Harper Valley PTA (spun off a tv movie with Barbara (Jeannie) Eden as too sexy mom in a gossipy town

The scene is set by the opening line, describing a man who has just come home from a vacation only to find out his wife has been cheating on him. The man’s best friend breaks the news that his wife has been hanging out with that “Amos boy, Seth” and that he too has slept with her. From there, the story gets a little more convoluted. The man is determined to get revenge (of the murder persuasion) on his backstabbing friend. He grabs his dad’s old gun and heads over to the house to get his vengeance. Once he gets to the house, though, he finds his friend already dead at the end of a trail of footprints that were “too small for Andy to make.” After the man is arrested and wrongly convicted, the narrator reveals herself to be the man’s sister and the culprit of the murder. She sought revenge by proxy on Andy and her brother’s wife. Talking over the audio makes it difficult to get it clearly somewhat. Great song! Original is great too!
@d.t.r.8036Күн бұрын
Great summary -- only thing I would add is that the component this format reveals is that the cheating wife was also screwing around with the fiancee of the storyteller...which is something the song lyrics alone never disclose.

“Sherlock homeboy” had me crackin’ up, imagining some kinda maniacal monocle 🧐! 😆 Comments are correct about it being the remake of Vicki Lawrence. I never realized it growin’ up because I was born in ‘74 and too young to remember the original. I knew she could sing, from her time as a co-comedienne on The Carol Burnett Show, but I never knew she’d recorded anything prior, until much later. I wouldn’t mind a comparison with her original, as I’m not overly familiar with it. She definitely has talent. For Reba, still throwin’ in my 2¢ with “Still.” But so many other great song picks are up in these comments! “She Thinks his Name was John” is also just as moving. Reba has that way about her, to convey a great story musically.
