One day in march of 2001 they were on their way to the recording studio when they were delayed in traffic because of a school shooting at Santana high school. They wrote this song and delayed the release of the album until September 11 2001, quite the release date.

Oh man. So glad you're reacting to this one. As a young Christian in the 90's, P.O.D. broke the mold for me on what Christian music could be. This song hits hard.
@AngelTeaWitch8 ай бұрын
so true. they even had a song in an album that had to be removed for it to be sold in the Christian bookstores because it had swearing in it. Their music is real and raw and pushes the boundaries of a lot of Christians who hide from addressing the serious issues going on with mental health.
@miketaylor57627 ай бұрын
That didn’t happen until like 2017. But they did have a record banned in most Christian music stores because of the album artwork. The original artwork for “Snuff the Punk” was banned because it had an angel pointing a gun to the head of a demon. And then their major label debut was banned originally because it was seen as “occultic”. It was finally allowed in Christian stores when Atlantic Records put on a black slipcover that only had the head of the meditating wood guy cut out. And then 15 years later you get a Christian band putting an actual naked woman on the album cover and a different Christian band saying “fuck” in a song. Weird how time changed. @skjoldr481 Amen - Thank you for stressing that. Columbine happened just two years prior to this song in 1999. Sadly in Michigan, just two years ago in a small community of Oxford, a 15 year old kid shot 6 of his classmates, killing two of them. Strangely, unlike most mass shooters, he did not take his own life. Hard to know what would have been better. He was found guilty, as was his parents for supplying the gun, but I don't remember how many years of prison time he will have to serve.😢😢😢.
@mistyy18728 ай бұрын
The first shooting in schools like we hear about now happened in the town I live in now. Paducah, KY a small town where a kid went in and started shooting right before classes started. I never knew about it before moving here. It happened in 97. Then again in 2018 there was a shooting in the next county. So utterly sad.

The most important, and awesome thing, about this song, was how it was promoted. P.O.D. did a media campaign which saw them on the late night T.V. talk shows. Awesome reaction! My favorite line in this song, or rather the one that hits hardest for me is: "He was never really one of the guys, no matter how hard he tried, often thought of suicide. You cross a line and there's no turning back, told the world how he felt with the sound of a gat." That always got me. One of the good things about POD is that while they identify with Christian Rock, they don't make their entire focus or base their identity on Christianity, which makes them so much more accessible to non-Christians like myself. I agree that youth in general need help, but they do not need saving and there is a difference between the two. A little assistance goes a long way to establish self-reliance and self-responsibility which is exactly what is needed because if you are constantly coming to someone's rescue not only does it create an imbalanced power dynamic in their life, but it also sets them up to fall even harder when you can't or won't save them for whatever reason. Do what you can to help, but ultimately it is their decision to make.
@DarkSun1234567898 ай бұрын
Your first sentence kinda depends. I myself am not religious at all, and found the band Skillet (Christian Rock Band) by accident. Their texts are heavily influenced by their faith, but they never explicitly use words like god etc. so the first time i listened, i (maybe English as second language did its part too) thought it it was about/towards a girlfriend/wife. I think the song was "Whispers in the Dark". If you know they are Christian their songs can actually make sense in both interpretations, which i found intriguing, listened to them ever since.

Mental illness is something that has been overlooked or ignored for years, decades, centuries. As a teenager, I was told to just cheer up, it will pass. Just smile. I lived. I made it. It sucked. But I got help. Some people didnt. There was a huge outcry in music during the late 90s that we still see today. From Korn to POD to Falling in Reverse to Ren...and so many in between. I dont feel alone in my struggles but I was one of the lucky ones. Im just glad that as years go on, talking about mental illness is becoming more socially acceptable and people arent being told to just hide it anymore. Hiding it kills.

I haven't heard this song since it came out in the early 2000s and it just hit me too, I heard the cry in myself and I have carried the cry with me because it still exist in the world today. When will it change? When enough people care. 💟☮

This is one of my favorite songs from when I was a teen. This album was the first cd I ever got.

I graduated in 2003. I didn’t/don’t know a single song of theirs other than this one but I’ll say, this one STILL hits me hard. Adding it to my playlist of nostalgic hits from my teenage years 💙
