No matter how many times I hear it, I love "Don't Stay in School." When I first heard this song, it reminded me of a conversation I had with my parents about their education. My mom went to an all-female school and two of the courses that were mandatory were sewing and cooking, which admittedly made me a very jealous guy due to how applicable they are compared to most of the courses I had to take.

Cooking should be absolutely more common in schools, when I was in school, I was taking all the regular classes, science classes, american history, math, english, even art, but I never even had the OPTION for a cooking related class, which I would've greatly appreciated.

Do you recall this post he had made. I can’t for life of me remember where I heard him speak on it bc it wasn’t his own channel. But he had a vulnerable talk about that song and his MDD. And he said how just that one first like “I’m not dead” on the bed he reshot like 200 times. I just think it’s such a significant little detail truly showing how real that song was to him. How much pain he was in and trying to express it perfectly for us to understand. I don’t now. I always just found that little tid bit fascinating. I also wish him well as he’s going through another down currently. Much love 🤍 #mentalhealthawareness Dave shared something so vulnerable during a time it wasn’t as known to today.

It’s good that you understood the message. Many people get hanged up on the “Don’t stay in school” thinking he’s telling people to drop out of school when really he’s saying useless subjects shouldn’t stay in school. I think people that can’t see that are part of the problem, they can’t think for themselves or see thinks further than two feet in-front of their faces.

This. 100% this. They get hung up on "don't stay in school" because it's incendiary. Because it can become a "talking point" by one or both political parties to use against the other in an attempt to sway people to vote. And it, unfortunately, works... ironically, because we aren't taught in schools how to vote, what major issues exist in the world right now, and how to have empathy for fellow countrymen. I put the last part in there because it absolutely matters that what is good for person A in Chicago might not be good for person B in Dallas... or even person C, person A's neighbor across the hall of the apartment building they share. Politicians 'should' be cognizant of those issues and 'should' strive to acknowledge and accommodate them to the best of their ability, and we citizens 'should' be cognizant of the fact that they are theoretically trying their best to serve their constituents. Of course it doesn't work like that, but that is the idea.
@xyex

The thing is, those "useless subjects" are the point of school. School doesn't exist to be a kid's parent. It exists to impart the greater knowledge of humanity upon the individual. If you want parenting, talk to your parents.

If I’m not mistaken, shortly after this went viral there were actually some schools who started asking the students what they wanted to learn about, they’d take a vote, then they would devote some class time to actually going over and teaching what the students voted for. It obviously wasn’t a ton of schools that did this, but I remember reading stories about it and thinking that was pretty neat. I know I would’ve enjoyed that back when I was in school.

I mean, thats a nice sentiment by those schools but ultimately that is never gonna work in the long run. What you would need is a complete revamp of the educational system and for that you first need the vast majority of the population to consider it a serious issue. I imagine something like extending highschool by a year and then moving scientific subjects to the last 2-3 years and replace them before that with manditory subjects about more practical things that everyone needs to apply in life. Then you might be able to graduate at 10th grade having learned all of that and it is your choice to continue into scientific education after that. Which I imagine most pupils would still end up doing, since thats where the money in potential future jobs is at, just like how many students go to college today anyways.

My social studies/History teacher did this in high school, he called the box "How to adult" and we got to put in paper slips of questions for him to answer. That is how we suddenly got the homework to just apply for some job and write a resume he helped us with. A short discussion on how to do well on a job interview. Then we got a fun task to look up houses and apartments that we could potentially afford with the job we were pursuing or dreaming of. Then he would give tips on what to look for when searching for a home. He would also bring in present-day issues from the news into the class so that we would know and understand what was going on. Then in sex ed in junior high our cooking-and-health teacher let us do something similar with anonymous questions and she would answer just about anything. But a large issue is also that we don´t know what we don´t know until it suddenly hits us. Like taxes. I didn´t know what I didn't know until I suddenly stood there and needed to know stuff.
@CrippledMerc
@CrippledMerc Жыл бұрын
@@oceanmythjormundgandr3891 Oh that’s neat. My health teacher did the same thing with letting us write anonymous questions for her to answer. I had a teacher who would allow us free time to work on homework from other classes or allow us to read and stuff. He basically would let you do whatever you wanted as long as it was somewhat educational, like you couldn’t be playing games or watching movies on a handheld or anything like that, but almost anything else was fair game. Your last point is an important one though. Most kids at that age often wouldn’t know what questions they should ask even if they were given the opportunity to ask and learn about anything. I think that’s something, that being that you don’t even know what you don’t know, that you discover and come to realize with life experience. I know I didn’t properly realize and understand that until I was probably 20 or so. I knew that I was relatively smart, and that there was a lot that I still didn’t understand, but I didn’t know just how little I knew.

That little rhyme about Henry's wives was what we were taught to remember the order of what happened. Very nostalgic for something I can't believe I still haven't forgotten, and don't think I ever will. I was a sophomore when this was released, and I remember this being the talk of almost everyone in school. It really showed us how much we didn't know about everyday life at that age in school.

I actually stumped my teacher. I asked why we weren’t learning a certain subject. She said not everybody wants to learn it. Then I asked why we were learning a different subject. She said some people want to learn it. So we learn a subject very few people want to learn over a subject most people want to learn. They aren’t teaching you to succeed, they are teaching you to fail.

He’s done some excellent work in helping other KZbin creators make songs of their own, like TheOdd1sOut, Idubbz, Jaiden Animations, and PewDiePie. They really, really try, and often succeed, in convincing students that socialism/communism is the way forward (I'm not saying it isn't, I'm just saying historically it hasn't exactly worked too well in general). The time devoted to teaching us politics and theories about social equality and equity, from 130 years ago, is time lost not learning math, geography, portuguese, english, and especially actual history. We had one called “Life skills” and it was also an elective and depending on your classes you basically couldn’t take it if you weren’t in advanced placement and most people in advanced placement classes were trying to fit electives in that would help them get into colleges and it wasn’t something we could take time for because we needed things that looked better to college like Debate, computer science, sports, or things like yearbook that make you look like a good student or a socially active person because that’s what colleges want. I heard they ended up discontinuing the class a couple years after I graduated because not enough people were taking them.

No, he actually did really well in his schooling, it's not because he didn't learn, it's because the information wasn't offered. I completely agree with him, btw. The subjects in the actual education system need overhauled. Some are important, some are definitely things everyone should have a basic understanding of, and some are very much "elective". As soon as I left high school I learned that I knew pretty much nothing useful that I didn't learn at home from my own family. Cook, clean, sew, repair things, job applications, money, taxes, I could go on. All from the family, not from school. I had a feeling that you'd understand what Dave was trying to say in this video/song. A decent amount of people just look at the title and ignore anything that is said in it. Great video. Also. I recommend checking out 'The Stupendium' if you haven't already. I think you'd find his music very enjoyable. His rapping is insanely good. Honestly all tracks are fantastic so pick whichever title grabs your attention. 'Open The Sky' is a really good one. Much love.

I came to your channel because of you Ren reactions. I subscribed because of your great analyses, your vast background knowledge, your openness and the overall quality of your reactions. You already talked about the "mental health" part of this video. I highly recommend going deeper into Boyinaband as well, especially regarding this topic! Here are some videos I'd recommend for that. David (the guy from Boyinaband) has a long history of struggling with mental health himself, and that is one reason he uploads videos to youtube very irregularly. After a long hiatus he posed his song "I'm Not Dead." which is both hitting hard with the lyrics and musically. "I'm not dead." kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpzJfmCLgJp1na8 He also has videos, in which he collaborated with other youtubers. What I love about these is that they are accompanied by a second video describing the production process and explaining the thoughts that went into them, giving them some context: Topic: Anorexia Song: ft. JaidenAnimations "Empty" kzbin.info/www/bejne/eICspZh7it2sgK8&ab_channel=VariousStuff (the original video is not available anymore, this is a reuplad) BTS: kzbin.info/www/bejne/roOWmaWQiJeWZqM&ab_channel=Boyinaband Topic: (more vaguely) existential dread Song: ft. TheOdd1sOut "Life is Fun" kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXLFkJV5qbCojsk&ab_channel=TheOdd1sOut BTS: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqK9hIlrqKuYkKs&ab_channel=Boyinaband Edit: No idea why I didn't think of this before! Especially from an analytical standpoint interesting might be a series he did with Dan Bull (also a great and technical british rapper btw). It's called "lyric or satiric". For each video they choose one famous rap artist, and they present each other 10 lines. 5 of those are from songs of those artists, 5 are made up by them in the style of those artists. and the other one has to guess which ones are which. it's hillarious. (for some reason I can't find the link to the first episode, so I give you a random one [it's ep 8]): kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJ-xZpabl7tmm7c&ab_channel=Boyinaband aaaand one with more actual rapping. you said you saw potential for more technical rapping. Well, that's this one. I think from a musical/technical point of view this one (next to maybe "I'm not dead.") might be the most interesting to you: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6K2o6mqaNienbM

Not to mention his more thought out commentary + disstrack on Prince EA and his ignorance of what Real depression is, esp as someone with MDD himself. I left this elsewhere, but he talked about shooting Im Not Dead on someones channel.. i cant recall whos for the life of me.. but he said he reshot just the first line “Im not dead” on his bed like 200 times bc he said he was so low at the time and really wanted it to be conveyed vocally.. not a Fun Fact, more Sad Fact.. but also very tragically raw to know bc i feel it speaks volumes how important the song clearly was for him to get out.. esp with that remarkably beautiful ending screaming “I DONT WANT TO STOP!”… was probably so cathartic for him to scream. 🤍

I have almost every word in the alphabet when it comes to learning disabilities. I hated school. I would HATE that I wrote a paper worthy of good grades, but would be down graded one grade on every paper I handed in because of dyslexia. Math was basically a different language to me because I have number blindness or Dyscalculia. I was born in 1987 so my teachers knew nothing of ADD, Dyslexia and Dyscalculia. I hate that school made me feel stupid when I am really smart as long as it is something that I have an interest in. I was finally diagnosed with everything I have in junior high and high school, but by that point it felt like the ship had sailed since I was so far behind in some subjects. I finally got some small study aid after being diagnosed. I got a laptop so I could write normal, fast and with spell check and I had one hour longer on test and exams but by that point I had almost given up on school. I failed math and nature science the last year of high school. I have NEVER had to show my grades to get any kind of work so I honestly don`t know why that would have such a "huge" impact on where I would end up in life when it really did not. I speak 4 languages and can read 3. I just wish that you could have a bigger saying when going to school. I would not mind saying super early in my school years "you know this subject is just not for me. I can learn the basics but can I take away math and use those hours in a subject that I am interested in and want to advance in and put more time into?" It should be more streamlined into what you the student want to focus on and put time into. Like practical stuff and life stuff like he said.

As a therapist who also has a diagnosed personality disorder a lifetime, but officially 12 years.. i relate a ton. Actually became the reason i went into psychology bc i wanted to understand MYSELF more since no one else had properly cared or tried to despite my clear symptoms resembling yours and few other tics. Having now finished my masters.. ive honed in on alternative schooling more than becoming a therapist bc being an actual therapist was never something that interested me.. but i have this strong affinity for children and wanting to “fix” the ways teachers teach.. ie, how theres several major types of diff learners.. visual, hearing, touching etc. i dont know if youve ever come across Waldorf Schooling.. its a more psychologically based type of school where children are taught using a completely different curriculum which touches on all forms of learning bc its more personal, kids keep the same teacher for every 4 years building better rapport so they can feel more comfortable coming forward with any issues they might have. Or vice versa, teachers become better equipped with recognizing if a student seems to be going through something, or having some sort of disability that might require more attention. Its a really great model and often said to be the future of education. Fingers crossed. The other cool thing they do is having the curriculum parallel the age of childrens biggest strengths. For instance, before age 7, the most focused areas of teaching is communication, teaching children how to get along and resolve disputes bc thats the time kids obv begin learning behaviours that will follow the rest of their lives. So its a bit like preventative teaching in behaviour before kids learn how to cope in unhealthy ways like shutting down or fighting. Another major thing before 7 is Creation/Imagination.. so arts and music bc thats the age range kids develop their fine motor skills. So its more important to focus on stimulating that part of the brain thats already naturally growing rather than their multiplication tables, for instance. I hope this makes sense bc im writing middle of the night, lol. But yeah, Waldorf Schools.. theyre pretty readily available in Europe, but in the US they are pretty expensive since its technically private school. Hopefully it begins to leak into all curriculums bc everything ive deep dove into seems to cover the issues we both went through.. 🤍

Our school has actually taken some really good steps into improving the things he talks about in this video. First aid classes, mental health classes, and a class your junior and senior year that goes over taxes, how to make resumes, how to manage your money, and how to trade stocks. There was also a sex ed class that went beyond "just don't have sex and you won't have a kid" but some people still don't care because every year someone in high school gets pregnant. I'm not sure how common this change is across the world, but I'm glad our school changed

In school, where at least one friend and I were suicidal, we didn't learn about mental health, but we were taught that suicide would send us to hell. We were told bullying was wrong, but we aren't taught about the medical problems, systemic societal failures, familial problems, struggles with identity, ect. that can lead to the things that people are bullied for that could lead to a better understanding of one another so that bullying could be reduced. We learn about ancient history, but we don't learn about recent geopolitical conflicts that could influence our political ideology. We learn about the cold war and world war 2 but we don't learn about fascism or authoritarianism or what communism or socialism or capitalism are and the differences that lead to all of the different tensions so that we could just be fed whatever propaganda they want to scare us, and if they do something that is similar to what we fought against (like mass surveillance that was exposed by snowden) we wouldn't be all that upset. We weren't taught about colonialism and imperialism to understand the motivations behind a lot of immigration, so that immigrants could be demonised. We are not taught actual black history, or indigenous history, or the history of any minorities to understand the flaws in the justice system or to develop empathy through understanding. Racism is a learned behavior. We aren't taught the reality of the military, especially in the US, so it is easier to draft people directly out of high school. Another issue is tbe extremely underpaid teachers. If they were paid more. I am a tutor in math and physics, and because teachers are so poorly paid, a lot of teachers who teach those subjects are not trained to teach those topics at the higher levels, because that requires taking more college courses. This leads to a lot of kids who want to pursue fields that require math, especially, to not go for it because it seems impossible. Tutoring I can easily change Cs into As. We cut funding to the arts. We don't provide anything for people who want to learn basic stuff like how to fix a car, actual first aid, how to cook, ect. But a state is literally passing a child labor law and presenting it as a "learning opportunity," but it is in dangerous stuff like demolition, which is dangerous for both the children and the other workers. The US is so unbelievably fucked up.
