Great reaction - love how in-depth you're willing to get into finding out about the UK issues to make an informed reaction! One point about Grenfell tower - the cladding wasn't originally on that building - it was added on because the tower was visible from a neighbouring rich area and they didn't want to see that "eyesore" so they had it covered to appease the eyes of the rich. Knowing that context puts an entirely different level of shock to how they used cheaper materials and how that situation eventually unfolded.

Very late to this but enjoyed your other content on Dave and really appreciate listening to someone from the US speak so well on political issues in the UK. Just wanted to add that the lines on Cameron/UK youth are referring to Cameron's government sustaining austerity for an absurdly long time and cutting virtually all funding for youth services. Huge numbers of youth clubs and youth schemes were rolled back or even stopped/closed entirely. Obviously, the worst hit areas were the most impoverished so the combination of underinvestment in positive youth engagement with absolutely enormous cuts to state-funded education meant that during Cameron's tenure, pretty much everything stopped functioning in the poorest areas of London for young people. Schools were bedlam and barely had enough teachers to cope (my school in S'wark) was completely falling apart with holes in the external walls and windows broken etc. and with no youth clubs for people to go to and homes like those at Grenfell you have a ridiculously toxic combination of factors that preceded the massive spike in youth violence. Where can you plausibly turn when there are no routes into higher education, no routes into work or safe housing and nowhere to spend free time in structured environments with positive role models...?

And yes. Rashan Charles and Edson Da Costa were both killed by the Met Police. I actually went to a meeting with Edson's family who were in floods of tears begging people to take action to support them in finding out what actually caused Edson's death. He died in hospital following his arrest when police officers stopped the car he was in. The police were looking for a black ford focus as the driver of that vehicle was suspected of being in possession of a weapon. Edson was the passenger in a Mercedes and the police later admitted that his car was stopped purely because it was an expensive car and the inhabitants were black and that "didn't add up"... Edson had swallowed 88 wraps of cocaine in attempts to conceal them on seeing the police approach and when he was asked to step out of the car he made a run for it. The police then tackled him and several officers piled on top restricting his airway and then spraying CS gas at him from stupidly close range. They misconstrued Edson's attempts to free his airway for continued resistance and called armed officers who, on arrival minutes later, noted that Edson had stopped breathing. The police then called an ambulance but lied to the ambulance dispatchers saying that Edson was conscious and breathing and misdirected the ambulance to Woodcote rather than Woodcocks (70 mile difference). Body-worn cameras show officers, again minutes after Edson has stopped breathing returning to his lifeless body and concluding (while there is mucus spilling from his nose and foam from his mouth) that he is acting these symptoms and he is still a risk to them so deny aid. Eventually, another couple of minutes later a separate officer calls overdose procedure and they begin providing CPR. Yet still, they don't upgrade the ambulance call to a cat 1 call for a life threatening situation and it takes them nearly 7 more minutes to do so. Edson died after he was eventually transferred to hospital.
