The guy who has the lead in the beginning is Scott. And as for your question about him being the "leader" of the group - the answer isn't really that simple. The members are all equal - there isn't really a leader in the usual sense. But Scott is often seen as their unofficial leader since he was the one to put the group together. And yes, Scott does sing lead a lot of the time - because of a number of reasons: - especially in the beginning of their career, he was the one with the most experience and the most confidence in himself and his voice. Kirstin in particular was more in the background, but she's really coming into her own over the last couple of years. - Scott has a huge vocal range (about 4 octaves) and his voice suits a lot of different styles of music, which makes him more versatile.

Totally agree. Also, Scott has an insanely relentless ambition. His will is very strong, and I suspect he pushes the group to keep creating and appearing. The others all work hard, for sure, but I think Scott just is a driving force-maybe because he started the group and is just that much more invested. And you are right on the money that his baritone and amazing range is just very suited to pop music, so is naturally a "lead" type of voice, even as the other members are all very talented and capable of carrying a song.

Very true! Scott also just has never-ending energy. He has co-founded Citizen Queen and Acapop Kids and was the one (for the first several years) to edit all Superfruit videos. If you look at the 2015 original Pentatonix album, Scott (closely followed by Kevin) wrote the most songs and usually the person who wrote the song sings them.

Scott does have a great range and great vocal control, people love those riffs! The others however have a great range as well, I believe Kirstin's is the same as Scott, 4 as well? Mitch has an octave range of I've heard 5-6 octaves. I disagree scott is more versatile, I think they all are - Matt's stunning bass, and he is just as comfortable in that middle register as scott, and he is wonderful and portraying characters/theatrical eg. You're A Mean One Mr Grinch, and hehas such a clear beautiful voice, I don't think we've heard all he can do. For Mitch his range amazing, that gorgeous sweet high register like his part in hallelujah that allows him to fill female range in songs, his lower register like in amazing grace, rapping, theatre eg. Defying Gravity, his own music he writes and performs as Messer. Kirstin has shown how versatile she is performing on broadway, and writing her own songs as well. They are all so unique and talented. They all deserve the spotlight.

The entire group is against this notion. They all sing lead and backing vocals. Scott tends to take the first solo in a song because it is their style to start in mid range.

That noise/sound you’re hearing at about 3:20 is Avi, the bass. He can do this amazing thing called overtone singing. That noise I think draws on that ability. He has a great example of that in their “Aha!” music video. Also, that song is a good example of someone else (Mitch) taking the lead for the whole song. Usually they alternate lead between Scott, Mitch and Kirstie.

The blond is Scott Hoying (baritone) , the guy in the yellow shirt is Mitch Grassi (tenor), the girl is Kirsten Maldanado (mezzo-soprano), the beatboxer is Kevin Olusola (also great Cello player and fluent in Mandarin) and the bass is Avi Kaplan, he left the the group in 2017 and is doing solo work. They won season 3 of the Sing off and have won three grammys for their music. Matt Sallee is the newest member and was picked to be the new bass.

That "strange sound" is coming from the bass, Avi Kaplan. lol He and Kevin provide the rhythm . they were labeled the "meat and potatoes" guys of the group during their first singing competition (the sing-off) by one of the judges, Shawn Patrick Stockman from Boyz II Men. this was also the first time that Avi and Kevin performed/joined the group.

Avi, the guy with the deep voice, carries all the base notes, as well as a mellow song voice. Mitch, is unreal with the rap lyrics. My son introduced me to them a few years ago. Love these guys!

It was Scott's idea to form the 5 person group so they could compete on the Sing-Along, which was a TV competition. Scott, Mitch and Kirstin had known each other since they were around 10 yrs old doing theatre and they went to the same high school in Arlington, Texas. Scott and Kirstie went to different colleges and Mitch was a senior in high school when Scott heard about the show while attending University of Southern California. They decided to do it and quickly had to find a bass and a beatboxer, Kevin and Avi.

The correct name for that strange sound is , throat singing. It can be developed in time. Avi was trained in opera, was studying music at a collage( cant remember where) when Scott called him to see if he would consider joining the group. Scott's friend and now arranger for the group, knew of Avi's great bass. Kevin who can also rap, was found on KZbin. He was doing cello boxing. Playing his cello and beat boxing at the same time.

Mitch and Kirstie both have incredible voices that easily take the lead. See Bohemian Rhapsody and the fan video of Aha! Live at the Star Vista Singapore to see Mitch shine. For Kirstie, Say Something and PTX's collaboration with Toddrick Hall's The Wizard of Ahhhhs. But the primary reason both of them tend to be more in the background is because they are so needed there to fill out their incredible harmonies.

Scott-blonde is the lead. He has a broad range from low bass to high tenor. Avi (no longer with them)- beard and longer brown hair does very low bass and does a lot of the lower beats/melodies. Kirsten-female (obviously...lol) does between alto and soparano. Mitch- the one with the short brown hair does alto to really really high soprano. Kevin- the one with the ball cap and hoodie beat boxes, plays cello and sings kinda altoish range.

Hi Bayo. Great to see a british reactor, with a genuine love for music, doing PTX. There is a great live version here, I think you will love, which again shows that they CAN do live what you hear on the "official" recordings... Also, if you search I believe there are 2 other songs from that set on YT. What you WILL notice as you see more live versions is that their voices are not the limiting factor when they do live 'shows'. It is always the mic setup. In the beginning of PTX Scott tended to be the one to have the most solos. However, with that being said, they have always put the voices where the arrangement needs them. they don't technically have a leader of the group, but Scott and his friend Ben Brahm brought them all together in the first place. I feel like each member has a specific "role" in the group, and Scott is the driving force that propels them into the spotlight. it might also be because he has such a broad range, he can lead most songs well. Mitch has songs he leads, such as "Aha" and "Bohemian Rhapsody", and now Kirstin has become way more confident in her solos, so in their original "Be my eyes" , she sings lead.

Kevin is the beat boxer but he can sing as well. Avi the base, helps with the beat boxing, but he left the group in 2017 and was replaced by Matt as a base. Matt shows off his voice in The Grinch, so you will have to find their video of that. Scott (baritone), Mitch (tenor) and Kirstin (mezzo-soprano) are the 3 primary singers. It depends on the song choice who gets more solo lines. Scott, Mitch and Kirstin are friends from least high school.

Yeah, Scott is the most outgoing of them. He is also the one who got the group together to begin with. He was friends with Kirsten and Mitch and contacted Avi and Kevin to join the group, so he's kind of the center of the group. He used to be more of a lead singer, though, in their Sing Off days. On that show, the others rarely took the lead, and never for the whole song. These days it's more evenly distributed. I guess Scott also starts out most times because he has a baritone voice that functions well as a starting point for the extremes.

If you really want to see how versatile they are, check out their “Evolution of Music” video. Also check out their performances from “The Sing-Off” tv competition. I think the episodes are available on iTunes. It was such a long time ago, but I believe they were the season 1 winner? They just consistently stood out above all the other groups in the competition. And for just 5 people, they sound so much bigger/fuller than 5 people.

As far as the lead thing goes, back when they'd just started on the SingOff, Mitch and Kirstie were a tad shy and didn't take much of the lead - through choice... now they just share it, whomever they think fits the track best goes with it.... or they all take fairly equal parts...

Scott, the tall bond, brought the group together for the TV show "Sing Out." These episodes have the group's first public performances ever. You can find them on KZbin, and they also give some insight into the group's internal dynamics. There is also a feature film documentary on Pentstonix ("On My Way Home") that shows them at their creative best.

Okay the TV program they started on insisted they have 1 person as "the leader" this does not happen in the other a cappella groups. If you look at Homefree they will always switch it up including the leads in the songs. Their basses also get to do alot more too. So Pentatonix is unusual in that. The only member with prior experience in a cappella was Avi Kaplan, the others were brand new to it. Scott had just started with a group at college. So when you look at other a cappella groups there is no one lead singer or leader.

Scott isn't really the "lead" singer. It's more like he has the most generalized range, so he generally gets the main vocals. When they want to go high, they give it to Kirsten and Mitch (and, believe it or not, Kevin), and when they want low they give it to Avi (and now Matt). But Scott has a great mid range with good lows and decent highs, so he ends up doing more work.
