Roger Waters elaborated on the lyric about education: "I'm not anti-education. I'm anti BAD education." There is a big difference. Also, I was around for "corporal punishment"..... There's a difference between "discipline" and "abuse". That concept has been SO lost these days. I remember one time I was "acting up" in school (disrupting class), and got whacked across the knuckles with a ruler. I settled down... but it didn't quite end there. When I got home. there was a message waiting for my grandmother about WHY I got my knuckles cracked earlier that day. When she found out..... I got my ass TANNED right before dinner, so that I had to sit there in pain while eating. Guess what..... I didn't act up in class again. I learned that my actions had consequences that I didn't like. I never got my butt smacked by anyone if I didn't do something to deserve it. THAT is the difference between discipline and abuse.

"I feel like I'm watching a Movie,," Krizz, you can watch the whole thing, it IS a movie, I own it on Blu-Ray. The bassist, Roger Waters, made a movie out of the Pink Floyd Album, The Wall. The movies is also called "The Wall" and it explores, life, trauma, fame, love, rock and roll and isolation,. Great film.

The Wall is one you have to do as an album or react to the Movie they did This was a theme album done during the period where groups like Pink Floyd, The Who, and Queen were doing "Rock Opera" albums (the Wall, Tommy, Bohemian Rhapsody) The Wall 🧱 spoke of the Barriers we put up in our minds and behavior to conform to society and how we must tear down those walls to find freedom and contentment

My favorite part of the video other than the poem being lyrics from the Pink Floyd's "Money", was that all the chaos was the imagination of the kid who the teacher made fun of and wacked with a ruler. Also the kids faces turning into masks represents taking away their individuality, turning them into another faceless brick in the wall.

I was a freshman in high school when this came out. (This was back when smoking was even allowed at a designated area on campus!). One of the punkier kids locked and BARRICADED himself in the PA system room and BLASTED this song that could be heard in every classroom and well beyond the outside border of the school. It took police to get the kid out and turn to it off, but not before the song was played through almost twice!!!

I was working in Selma Alabama, in a Middle School. I was working in the IT closest next to the Principal's office. This was in 2017. While in there I could hear her yelling at a student who from what she was saying was multiple repeat visitor to her office for bullying other kids and disobeying teachers. After a few minutes I hear a whack, whack, whack sound and knew from my childhood (I'm 56) that she was paddling the kid. Sure enough I see the the kid come out with tears in his eyes and she was telling him to straighten up or this will happen again. She looked over at me and said a little embarrassed "I hope you didn't hear that". I just smiled and said "hear what and I'm glad they have you as a principal because you will change lives here". Yep, they need more discipline with clearly stated and administered punishment for those kids that have none of it at home with broken families.
@christinec49192 күн бұрын
You and the principal are both monsters. You don't put hands (or paddles) on children at school EVER! Just because you call it discipline doesn't mean it's not assault and battery.

We had a 7th/8th grade science teacher in the mid-80s that would give "hacks" to the smart-asses in class.😆 He used an 18" paddle riddled with holes, and with a handle. Kids had to bend over and grab their ankles, and he would swat them on the ass. It really pissed him off when the one getting the hack laughed in his face, which just led to a few more swats. He did this for years, and he was a legend and respected..... I don't recall a single parent ever causing a fuss over it. Times have certainly changed.....

Definitely listen to all 3 parts of the song. Part 2 is the most popular part though.
@danakillingsworth2954Күн бұрын
We got swats as well. You should listen to the whole thing, it's a story told from beginning to end. The "wall" they talk about comes down in the end. There was "something else about to happen". You only listened to one song in the middle of a full length story. I bought The Wall when I was in the 10th grade in 1980, and partied along the river with friends, starting it at the beginning, and playing it through. Great times. Darkside of the Moon is worth a listen as well.

Hi, Mr Kaliko, love your channel! Here is something you might find interesting: this song (and the whole album) was banned in South Africa, because a few years before it was released, schoolchildren in Soweto took to the streets to protest not being allowed to be taught in their native languages. It was a horrible bloodbath, and was known as the Soweto Uprising (June 16th, 1976). The Apartheid government banned the album because they were afraid more kids would be inspired to rise up. Of course, we all had the album, but the irony of a song about censorship (amongst other things) being itself censored is not lost on me. If you’re still reading this, thank you, and May I tell you about some amazing South African musicians that I would love you to react to - starting with Johnny Clegg and Juluka, look for the live version of Impi. ❤

This song in particular is an indictment of the British education system of the 50s-70s. But this is just a small part of the larger movie, The Wall. The movie is the fictional story of a rock star named Pink Floyd (played by Bob Geldof, a rock star in his own right, later knighted for his work in African famine relief). Pink has severe psychological damage, and has built up a mental wall to protect himself. His education is just one brick in the wall. He ends up committing suicide as a result of all the damaging experiences he has had. For most of the movie, we see Pink in a hotel room, having flashbacks to various parts of his life, as people come and go, trying to get him motivated to play his gig that night. Even now, each person is more interested in making sure he plays, and that they benefit from it, than in Pink's best interests, and thus each visitor is also an additional brick that adds to the wall. By showtime, the wall is complete, and there's no turning back, so Pink ends his life, seeing no way to break through it. It's an incredibly sad story; the music is on point at every stage of the film, and Geldof does a great acting job. You should watch/react to the whole movie.

In England we still got the cane into the early 80s, after the cane was banned we still got hit with books (generally the bible) or the board rubber (block of wood with a felt scrubber) thrown at you across the classroom. Corporal punishment only taught me to be violent towards someone who's winning the argument or just pissing you off.

The song is a critique of the education system and the indoctrination of students into a rigid, conformist way of thinking. The song's message is that schools are oppressive systems that dehumanize students and force them to conform to a predefined path of learning vs Basic education for life and critical thinking. Make good workers that don't question and conform.

The education system squelches children's creativity , crushes your spirit and individualism , and it forces conformity . The machine represents that showing how it chews them up and spits them out as faceless drones devoid of hope for achieving their dreams , in favor of falling into line and becoming a cog in the machine.

Sad thing: I'm from Kentucky, and we still have corporal punishment in the schools. Yes, the teachers can still "whoop" your child. When my kids were young, I only had one teacher even threaten to touch my child. Let's just say after our "come to Jesus" meeting, they were nothing but polite to my son afterwards. I'm old now, and my grandkids are in school. Let's just say this ole Nanna is just waiting for the day when a teacher or principal tries that on one of mine, and they'll see how fast a lawsuit can be filed.
