Billy started out in the Punk scene with the band Generation X. When he went solo he kept the Punk edge and brought it to the New Wave scene🤘🏼

I was a punk rocker during this time and we always called the new wave kids skippys. It was a sad day to see Billy Idol go to the Skippy side, but hey he made more money selling out. He's not even that old where is he , but they say it's better to sell out and fade away.

@@claudballs5679 I don’t think it’s wise to admit you’re a Gatekeeper. Gatekeepers aren’t fans of or loyal to anything/anyone but their own opinions of how things should be. In fact, Gatekeepers are the biggest sellouts. Especially those that claim to be Punk. Gatekeeping is the least Punk thing anyone can do.

Billy's stage name came from a nickname one of his teachers gave him, called him Idle Billy, but he got catapulted into the mainstream thanks to mtv, he was one of the ones to adapt to music videos and get heavy rotation.

As kick ass as Billy Idol is, his songs would not be nearly as awesome without his longtime guitarist, Steve Stevens. He plays understated as the song requires and then rips it up when the song needs it. Steve's guitar parts are melodic and memorable while still being flashy as all get out and fiery! He and Billy are a great musical team.

What a coincidence!! I just saw Billy in concert 2 days ago, here in Vancouver 🇨🇦 With the legendary Steve Stevens on guitar. First time for me. Great reaction to a great song!! This was on HEAVY rotation back in the 80s. Especially on Canada's MTV (Much Music). That, and Rebel Yell. By the way, Billy said during the concert that Rebel Yell is his all-time fave of his repertoire. The rumour back in the day was that he wrote this song about his actual sister. She was pregnant and about to get married and he didn't approve.. Who knows if that's true though?🤷 Billy Idol: Huge fan of the Doors and Elvis Presley. Quite a few more you could react to...Eyes Without A Face, Flesh For Fantasy, Rock The Cradle of Love, Dancing With Myself, Hot In The City, and his wicked cover of the Doors' LA Woman.

From American Songwriter the craft of music: Though Idol is singing hey little sister, what have you done, the song isn’t entirely about his actual sister Jane Broad. At the time of writing the song, his sister was getting married and pregnant, which helped inspire the song, but it wasn’t all about her-“sister” is more of a slang in England for girlfriend, similar to “Bae.” The song also addressed his rock star life and leaving part of his former life behind.

From what I read, he Billy Idol met Steve Stevens (his bad ass guitarist) in New York, Billy was going to the underground dance clubs. He liked the scene and saw how people were into it. So he mixed that beat and Stevens added the hard rock guitar with punk. It hit hard.

When someone who has been off cocaine relapses and begins to do it again, it is called a "white wedding". "I've been away for so long I let you go for so long It's a nice day to start again It's a nice day for a white wedding" -Billy Idol's "White Wedding", referring to relapsing on cocaine.

Billy Idol came out of the 70’s punk scene in London in a group called Generation X. This name was chosen because he and the other members were of this generation. The group didn’t last long but because of punk becoming more popular for the time he was able to transition from just punk to rock. There’s still some punk in the music but it’s more rock than punk. This is also the case for a lot of punk groups of that time examples include The Clash and The Fixx. You might like Flesh for Fantasy or Dancing With Myself.

2:02 T.N.T. was their first release. That question was kind of worded in a misleading way. What they mean is "Which of these 4 albums was released before the other 3?" BTW, the order goes Highway to Hell, Back in Black, Who Made Who, then Ballbreaker His band before he went solo, Generation X, they were punk. I would say Billy Idol falls into the rock/new wave genre. Also gotta get to Dancing with Myself, Cradle of Love, and Eyes Without a Face

Billy was a punk rocker until he decided that he wanted to be home owner. hehe But he always kept a bit of that punk attitude. When he was the singer in Generation X, he was in a club one night and Led Zeppelin happened to be there. Billy decided he was going to tell them that they had become boring old farts. He strutted over, but before he could say anything, Richard Cole, Zep's manager (and a former professional wrestler,) decked him. Billy had the good sense to join up with Steve Stevens, a criminally underrated guitarist and songwriter. I am a big fan of them both. Go to a show if you get the chance.

This is such a perfect storm in terms of the timeframe and the influences Idol had to pull from not to mention the video as an art form was just coming into its own and you really could see the various tropes of what we think of when we think 1980s video here. The over-exposed colors, the Dutch angles, the quick frame cuts from one shot to the next and in this case... Because Idol was very familiar with the emerging The Goth scene in England. Not even certain it was called God yet, I think it was referred to as Batcave or new romantic... But visually lace and the dark Siouxsie and the Banshees style makeup was definitely all over the place here. It didn't hurt that the song is catchy as hell, he had the PowerHouse hard rock guitar playing of Steve Stevens working with him, that was kind of the punk rock Steve Vai for his time... And Billy was just flat out a captivating looking dude who could sing well. I look back on this video now and I think damn that's like everything the 1980s was all in one evil little bubble... Flirting with just enough Darkness to get the kids excited, and the parents mortified... It really is fucking perfect. And again it just doesn't hurt that so many of these songs are actually really good. Do they have endured for years because they're just solid songs, I'm way more in love with 1980s music as far as Pop Goes... Then I ever was in the 1980s when all I wanted to hear was the music that was being persecuted namely Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Sabbath etcetera...
