The members of sabbath were from a gritty, economically depressed industrial city in England. They did not feel in touch with the whole summer of love hippie, peace and love movement of the 60’s. They decided to make “scary” music instead. I for one am glad they went their own way.

Yeah this track is an absolute classic, it's considered the first ever stoner metal song and is basically credited with starting the entire stoner metal/rock sub-genre. If you guys haven't checked it out already, ya'll need to hear either Hand Of Doom or Snowblind. Both are killer tracks and absolute classics as well. Keep it up ya'll

Hi there guys. do enjoy your reactions. With regards to Sabbath. I would go with any of Into The Void, Symptom of The Universe or Supernaut. All amazing and out there Sabbath tunes. USA also had an early hard rock/proto metal band called The Blue Cheer. Try their version of Summertime Blues. For really early noisy guitar music, (pre sabbath), The Witch by The Sonics (early punk). For really great 80s thrash go with Tribal Convictions by Voivod. For brilliant US punk listen to Hollywood Babylon by The Misfits or Garbage Man by The Cramps. I'm sure you've done Ministry, so try I Will Refuse by Pailhead. Can't go wrong with any of the above. Enjoy

Tony Iommi didn't invent distortion, or heavy riffs, but was the pioneer of heavy metal. His riffs came to define heavy metal. He injured his fingers in an industrial accident, and had plastic finger tips made for his left hand. Because of this, he down-tuned the guitar so the strings would be easier to play. It also made riffs that deeper and darker sounding, which was perfect for their sound.

Black Sabbath is the first metal band. Oddly enough it was due to an accident that he down tuned his guitar. He worked in a factory and had the tips of 2 of his fingers on his fret hand chopped off. He made prosthetic fingertips and tuned his guitar differently to make playing easier and in the process created heavy metal.

The album that this came from, Master of Reality, left me completely awestruck, summer between 8th and 9th grade, after my older brother brought it home when he came back from Navy boot camp. It sounded so ponderous and heavy that I could feel it in my bones, it was simply nothing at all like the am radio pop music that was playing all around me that summer. I still throw the album on at least once a year, and just let the experience wash over me all over again.

Great song but I think you have the wrong album on your thumbnail. On a different note I feel that I have to say that I started watching music reaction videos on KZbin around a year ago and it astounded me that young adults (20-30’s) did not know these songs that I have known and grew up with. Simply because they are so iconic. I’m now at a point where I appreciate them sooo much more and I’m extremely grateful to have had them influence my life all these years. I also want to sincerely thank people like you two who willingly opened your minds and explored this kind of music and others with an open mind and heart. I am confident in saying that I feel like you two and other reactors like you have benefited far beyond what you could have imagined by doing so. Thank you, guys for restoring a big piece of my faith in the human kind. ❤️

Great reaction. Here are a couple of comments. When you say "he said", it is probably Butler the Bass player who wrote most, if not all, the lyrics. Weed has been illegal mainly because it can be grown anywhere unlike tobacco or coffee. If corporations could have gotten a patent on it, it would have been legal years ago just like if the oil companies could have patented the Sun, we would have solar energy everywhere. The name Black Sabbath came from a movie title. I saw them twice in the early 70's while in college and they blew me away. I am so blessed to have been a youth during the Golden Age of Rock. One more thing. I think Ward is in my top 3 of greatest drummers of all time.

Part of the reason for Tony's guitar tone is he down tuned his guitar so he could bend the strings more easily because he chopped his finger tip off on a shear a day before starting Sabbath. Thus inadvertently inventing the metal 🤘🤘

Back in the early 70's when Led Zepplin was getting air time on the Radio, Black Sabbath would not until the early 80's . Sabbath however had more of an underground following during the 70's & earned its title as the grandfather of metal though some would disagree. Story has it that the band worked in construction in between gigs. A freak accident occurred one day when a piece of sheet metal fell & sliced off the finger tips of Tony Iommi . This forced him to wear finger tip prosthetics where he had to downtune the guitar to compensate.. This brought foward the beginning of the power riffs that Sabbath is known for.. Around that time Ozzy got hold of the black book & after reading it one night had an spirit aberition appear in his bedroom . Scared shytless he ran over to Geezers place where Geezer put to lyrics Ozzys experience-..."Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" became the finished product. Some say this was the flesh offering that brought to life a new art form called Heavy Metal....The Bands name was then changed to......"Black Sabbath"!..........."What is this that stands before me???? ....Spirit in black.".......🤘

Bill Ward was a beast! I used to play this song in a band as a drummer and I never really did it justice I don't think, but it was a lot of fun to play. The bass player, geezer butler, tells the story of the origin of this song. Geezer ozzy and tony iommi were sitting at a kitchen table. Tony and geezer had their guitars and were working on some riffs when ozzy, who was siitting quietly rolling a big fat joint, began to sing to it. Geezer frantically started writing down what ozzy was saying, and the lyrics to this song were born.

There were other bands that had 1-2 songs heavier, but none came close to black sabbath, they are the ones that kicked the bolder down the hill. To me black sabbath is the ultimate Metal band, everyne genre out there can be heard in the Black Sabbath discography, Toni Iommy to this day insists that black sabbath is a blues band, I call BS. P.S. the distinctive sound of Iommis riffs comes from a work accident he had while working in a steel factory that caused him to loose parts of his fingertips (the accident is real but I'm not so sure that it actually affected his playing style)

The name Sweet Leaf comes from an Irish brand of cigarettes, which Geezer brought back to England from a holiday, but of course it's the birth of stoner metal. Ozzy and Geezer used to be in a band called Rare Breed before Sabbath, but I don't think they recorded anything. Bill and Tony used to be in Mythology. Ice-T samples Sabs songs "Black Sabbath" on his songs "Shut Up, Be Happy" and "Midnight", and "War Pigs" on "Rhyme Pays". He guests on a Sabbath song too "The Illusion of Power".

When I was a teenager (the 80's) this was our anthem. Before Rick James wrote 'Mary Jane' Sweet Leaf was the love song to weed! That beginning cough is distinctive! Tony taking too big of a toke in the studio. Forever immortalized. Master of Reality was fkn EPIC!! One of my all-time favorite albums. It's kinda sad that you guys are constantly attributing the lyrics to Ozzy. Geezer (the bass player) was the main songwriter/lyricist during the 70's OG 8 studio albums.

The influence of this song is diverse, far and wide. The riff from this song was used by the Beastie Boys in 1986 on the track "Rhymin' and Stealin'". It was also used in a reconstructed cover version called "Sweat Loaf" by the Butthole Surfers in 1987. Black Sabbath influenced so many musicians across the globe. Not just in rock and metal, but other genres too. Even William Shatner has covered "Iron Man" in his time!

Black Sabbath had two amazing singers; Ozzy Osborne and Ronnie James Dio. Both have many amazing songs both in and outside the group. You should check out Heaven and Hell with RJD on vocals.

I think Ozzy's first band was called Rare Breed with Geezer Butler. Tony Iommi was in a band called Mythology with Bill Ward.

Sabbath was the first band where the name heavy metal was used. Tony also lost finger tips when he was younger.

The band that may not have been the first heavy band, but they were the most influential. They birthed the doom metal genre and this specific song birthed the stoner metal genre, as they would become known later in the future. Both genres have successful bands with their own long lasting legacies by now, like Sleep, you should check out "Dragonaut" as it's their most famous song.

Black Sabbath may be the first heavy metal band, but the 1968 song "In A Godda Da Vita" by Iron Butterfly is usually considered to be the first heavy metal song. There are lots of chunky riffs in that song.

Of course guys I appreciate you checking out one of my favorite bands of all time but what I've noticed is you generally check out the well-known tracks it'd be nice to see a track that is great that's considered a less well-known track or a b side or something I suggest something from 1974 album possibly wheels of confusion really or any track off this album it's one of the greatest not well known albums that they have ever put out🗑️🗣️4️⃣🧬
