To me this song is simply a masterpiece. It has it all. Killer bass line, awesome guitar riff and solo, powerful drums, driving vocals, quiet reflection, driving rock. You name it!

Ronnie James Dio was never a guitarist, though he did indeed compose on guitar. He was, however, originally a bassist, and a very good one. On the eponymous debut album of his first hard rock band Elf, released in 1972, Ronnie was both a singer and a bassist. After that the band was augmented with a young jazz virtuoso named Craig Gruber (RIP) on bass, who later followed Ronnie to Rainbow and was even a contender to replace Geezer Butler in Black Sabbath in 1979, when Geezer very nearly retired permanently from the band. Ronnie's very first instrument as a child, however, was the trumpet, which would explain his amazing lung capacity! Jimi Jamison (RIP) of Survivor fame had the same background, and also lost very little of his vocal capacity before his untimely passing in 2014. Another fun fact: before Ronnie joined Black Sabbath, he was actually approached by Sweet to replace Brian Connolly (RIP). Now THAT would have been a bizarre lineup. (If anybody's interested, after Ronnie picked Black Sabbath over them, Sweet dedided to move forward with only their three remaining members.)

Right. Geezer wrote lyrics when Ozzy was in the band. Dio and most of the rest of the singers wrote their own lyrics.

Dio is credited for all lyrics on the Heaven and He'll album as well as music with iommi, butler and ward. In fact Dio was playing bass at one point due to issues Geezer was having trouble. Although the whole band is credited for the music Iommi has long admitted that some songs were completely him and Dio.

I think that Geezer stands out more when playing with Dio. Dio's voice allows Iommi to go harder with solos and play more dynamically, which gives Geezer more room at the bottom of the sound to show off. 'Master of Insanity' off of Dehumanizer really stands out as a Geezer showpiece.

Another great song off this album is "Neon Knights". It's a nice and fast jam. Tony Iommi mentioned in an interview (not that long ago) that his favorite solo to play is from "Neon Knights". And Dio is in top form as well. Great vid as usual, guys!

Later same year (2009) Dio was diagnosed with stomach cancer, and less than a year later he passed. I was devestated when it happened, I love Dio! So about that acoustic/classical guitar at the end. Even though I prefer CD’s (due to many reasons but this is not the place for that discussion) this is one instance where the Vinyl has one feature that is unmatched. Heaven And Hell is the last track on side 1 of the LP. The acoustic guitar comes in as the needle finishes with the regular grooves and continues into the “run off groove” … which still has the audio on it! And it was recorded onto there so that if your turntable does not have an automatic stylus, the record keeps spinning and the guitar keeps playing forever as a loop. And if I remember correctly, the loop was done so well that you can barely tell when it repeats.

The reason this was a " meant to be" situation is that in '79 Ozzy is fired from Sabbath, Ronnie James Dio left Rainbow, and Geezer and Tony wanted to audition singers. Dip comes in with this already written, he was considering using it in Rainbow but it didn't happen. He and Tony jam some time together and get the riff....the rest is a 3 year partnership, with 2 magnificent albums. 🤘🤙

You don't know who Boris Karloff were, guys? Forshame :-) He is the actor best known as the iconic Frankenstein's monster himself. And yes, Dave Walker did indeed replace Ozzy, briefly in 1977. Ozzy was however reinstated shortly afterwards, to be more permanently fired in 1979 and replaced by, in turn, Ronnie James Dio, Ian Gillan, Dave Donato (no album), Glenn Hughes, Ray Gillen (no album), Tony Martin, Ronnie James Dio again, Tony Martin again, and finally returning to the band in 1997 and remaining until its final disbandment in 2017. Whew, right? I strongly recommend you check out every lineup listed above, since they're all brilliant in their very own, significative way. You're doing a great job, by the way. Your enthusiasm and instinctive astuteness serve you well in your studies at the school of hard riffs :-D

Ozzy was Lead Singer from 69-79 about 6 albums. This is the title track of Dio's first album with Sabbath in 1979.

Yep, iconic riff courtesy of the great Tony Iommi. Vocals by the incredible Dio. Someone (I think Ronnie J Dio) referred to them all as Geezer Butler and the Italians lol

The album cover is a painting by Lynn Curlee called “Smoking Angels”. The band needed an album cover, they saw a picture of this painting and immediately cut a check and voilà…. I wish I had the original…. Some lucky person does….

I had seen Sabbath just before they kicked Ozzy out of the band Circa 1977/1978 they were phenomenal. Tony Iommi is The Godfather of Heavy Metal riffs…

Saw Motorhead open for Black Sabbath in 1994 when Tony Martin was singing. Highly, highly underrated singer. He did some of Sabbath's best work.

Saw the 4 original members of Black Sabbath in 1999 at Thunderbird Stadium in Vancouver BC. An absolutely magical show. I wrote down a play list days before the show that I wanted to hear played and Sabbath did every song on that playlist. It was supernatural. Those guys tapped into something bigger than themselves. Some would say that they are just great musicians and some would say that they are totally in league with Satan and the dark side of life... I'd say both!!!!!!
