I was in high school when this came out, it was like an anthem to me, because I was always in hoodies, smoking cigarettes/weed and not really caring about my grades outside of doing enough to graduate, skipped school a lot, listened to mostly metal. This hit all the right boxes for teenage me. Still an awesome song but I'm older and boring now.

This song was not on the original White Pony album (gray cover) but the record company wanted more singles so they wrote this as a spin off of Pink Maggit which is the last track on the album. This is the first track on the reissue album (white cover). They also had limited edition White Pony albums that had red and black covers that featured "The Boy's Republic". You know I will always be down for more Deftones. Check out: Engine No. 9 Root Birthmark Lhabia Mascara Be Quiet and Drive You've Seen the Butcher Just to name a few. You guys rock! Great reaction! 🤘❤️

Hey bros, please react to 'Pink Maggit', that's the original version of this song (that's why this song is also called 'Mini Maggit'), it's totally different and I think is one of the best Deftones songs ever. And you can hear more of that insane voice talent in 'Hexagram', in that song you can hear how Chino delivers all the power of his voice. Deftones has very hard songs: 'When Girls Telephone Boys', 'Leathers', 'Headup', 'Bloody Cape', 'Diamond Eyes', 'Needles and Pins', 'Prince', 'Poltergeist' and 'Rocket Skates' are just examples.

Deftones’ first two albums are almost no question considered nu-metal. They are part of that early group movement that really helped carve that niche of music genre at first but then quickly broke away from it around White Pony (2000) era. White Pony was mostly considered alternative metal at that point besides some tracks like this one.

I know Deftones were formed before them but I would say Korn were probably the genesis of nu-metal as everyone knows it in popular culture. I agree though that Deftones completely transcended any genre as they evolved. They're a lot like Primus in that there is literally nobody who sounds like them.
@metalguru852 жыл бұрын
This was from White Pony. Chino has said in an interview the record label weren't happy as the album had no 'hit singles' on it. Chino and the band knocked this out in minutes. They went a long time hating that they compromised but when I saw them in 2019 they closed with this.

@@NijFixsort of. Because it wasn’t included in the original release the label let you download the song for free off of a website. I can’t remember if you needed the cd or not to do it. They absolutely hated this song, the label said that Pink Maggit wasn't good enough and they needed a single, so Chino just wrote some raps that he just half assed for this.

Pink maggit wasn’t meant to be a single and the label wanted a rock rap song to cash in on that trend at the time. Deftones just used the hook from that song to make this one. It is true this was a throw away song for the label and the band proving to them how easy it is for them to write a rock rap song. Not surprising they left it off the 20th anniversary version of white pony.

You really should do Mascara and Lhabia off their Around the Fur album. The whole album is a masterpiece. My favorite Deftones album is Adrenaline which brings it way back to the beginning and much more heavy sound. Their self titled album and Koi No Yokan never get enough love but hopefully you will get to those as well.

For a song written in 10 minutes and being their worst overall song this is still great. But as somebody said y'all should check Pink Maggit, the song that closes White Pony and from which they built Back To School. That middle eight where Hollywood was mind-blown hits even harder on Pink Maggit, a dream-pop/shoegaze influenced epic 7-minute song. With that being said I must insist y'all react to Slowdive, Ride and My Bloody Valentine as a starting point for shoegaze. Won't regret it.

Funny how they were talking about wanting a nu metal deftones song not knowing they were about to listen to a numetal classic! FYI: The first 3-4 Deftones albums were during the NuMetal era. Don’t get stuck on Rap, rap doesn’t equal Nu Metal ….. Nu metal is a subgenre of alternative metal that combines elements of heavy metal music with elements of other music genres such as hip hop, alternative rock, funk, industrial, and grunge. Nu metal bands have drawn elements and influences from a variety of musical styles, including multiple genres of heavy metal. Wikipedia Disturbed / Sevendust / SOAD / Evenessence all can be classified as NuMetal but don’t incorporate elements of Rap in the music. Please don’t mention the one song the the bands have that do incorporate rap and not mention the rest of the bands catalog that doesn’t

This song is from White Pony, their record label wanted another single and didn't think anything else was good enough. They recorded this song just to please the record label and show them how easy it was to make something radio friendly. Also with White Pony they didn't want to be lumped in with the whole "nu-metal" thing and be part of a passing phase. They purposely went in another direction with White Point and it's probably their most successful record.

I love your channel and I love Nu Metal. A band that has rap on singing is not necessary Nu Metal, for example Faith No More (Alternative Metal) and Rage Against The Machine (Rap Metal). Nu Metal is a subgenre of Alternative Metal, that combinates different styles like Rap, Funk, Industrial, Alternative Rock, Groove Metal, Grunge, Progressive, Trip-Hop, Post-Hardcore, Reggae, etc. It's not necessary to have all that genres, the key is the final product, riffs, rhythm, singing, bass sound and more. You have Slipknot and Incubus (from beginning to 2006) and they are differents, but both Nu Metal. And that's the beauty of the genre: versatility. So, we all know that KoRn and Deftones gave life to Nu Metal, and I consider that Deftones still is. But from White Pony, Deftones went beyond the Nu Metal (like Adrenaline and Around the Fur), experimenting with Trip-Hop, Shoegazing and that put closer to an Alternative Metal band, but I consider they turned an evolution of Nu Metal. Deftones and KoRn will be always the kings, and they never will be far of that genre. Saludos from Chile!!

The rapping/hip hop influence was the trademark of Nu-Metal... Korn, Limp Bizkit, Coal Chamber, Linkin Park, Incubus and even early Deftones all had hip hop/rap elements in their music... While it wasn't absolutely necessary, rapping was still a quintessential element for a metal song to be recognized as Nu-Metal.
