I find the backstory shared in the comments here give me a better understanding to the unseen or unheard nuances to the song. Quite interesting for real, it gives the narrative more of an adult like experience as opposed to the quote on quote ‘School’ aspect. I’ll be downloading this one.

Bruv, I'm am loving that you are loving Deftones. They are one of the pillars of the Nu-Metal genre that have transcended beyond being just that and have always done exactly what they want, nothing more. I will say tho, I don't know how you've made it this far and NOT done My Own Summer....absolute FIRE!
@drunkship122 жыл бұрын
Agreed but Imo My Own Summer has been over pushed and over played. I've heard it so many times that I usually skip it and I wouldn't be mad if they left it out of their live setlist. There's a lot more to deftones than that song. Anyway Peace!

Interesting story about this song: Back to School (also know as Mini Maggit), was added to the album (White Pony) after the album was first released... the first prints of CDs released didn't have this song on it (I know mine didn't), it was added to the beginning of the album in later prints/releases. The story goes that White Pony was Deftones' most critically acclaimed album and the record label felt like they didn't have a real strong single to put on the radio/MTV (other than "Change [In the house of flies]"). So they asked the Deftones to crank out a radio friendly single. This song is actually a sort of remix of the last song on the album, Pink Maggit, but with a very different vibe but similar melody.

It's never going to beat RX Queen, Sextape, MOS, CMND/CTR oh god I'm getting Deftones tourettes 🤣🤣🤣 Sextape was the first Dance song at my wedding. A beautifully misleading title to a romantic song

This song wasn't on the original release for the album. The label had them go back to the studio and record a "rap-rock single" This was during the big rap-rock phase at the beginning of the 2000's ( spider man 1 vibes lol) You're after spider man 2 vibes.... Bruv. Rocket skates by deftones.... the chorus is literally this: "Guns...Razors...Knives...Fu*k with me..." the rigf... the beat... the VIBE. Glad you're digging the deftones though. Hope Charlie is well. Glad you're keeping the channel moving along. Be well. Bless up 🙏🤙🤙

Ahhh this track. Deftones never wanted to make this song. Pink maggit was the original version and much better. Interesting he said there’s a disconnect between the chorus and verse. They wrote this so fast to be radio friendly. They had outgrown this nu metal rap rock at this point

It's funny how you mentioned it's a satirical sound because the song was made because of the studio wanted a single to play on the radio and Deftones said, "Ok, here's your track". and they ran with it. Pink Maggit is the OG track.

I just watched all of your reactions to the Deftones and this particular one can describe how people respond to them. In that, you get them off the break and love it or it does not appeal to your musical ear. I felt the same way you did, JB… I felt that shit right away when I listened to their first album and knew that they were special in their approach to the flooded genre. Made their own path using a lot of unique chords and sound mixing. The drummer keeps me in it… always. And, of course, Chino’s voice. Phew. Forget about it. Keep going with the reactions, my dude… Thank you.

Definitely an interesting one for a first timer, I’m glad your partner(didn’t catch his name) is able to sit back and listen objectively, that’s cool. This is probably one of the most rap-heavy songs of theirs so if he was vibing with that more than the rock chorus and bridge and stuff then Deftones may not be his thing. Which is fine, it’s nice when everyone isn’t just loving everything they hear, especially if they are still willing to dissect and discuss the theme, musicality, etc. Cheers

Kool. First off ... this is another song off that 20 year old White Pony Album. Everything you've seen other than Minerva/ Shut be up and drive has been White Pony This was the label asking for a more commercial sound to finish the album. Chino said okay... he would go through the formula Everything boring and simple his group was avoiding would be on this track. This was more a brainstorming in the cafeteria sound for the band as compared to the well thought out lyrics he puts into the normal songs. His topic is that they are motivated differently & Deftones are not the followers being pressured to fit in. They didn't love it, but they are artists... label was happy. This is sub par for them. The musical genius dumbed it down enough to become mainstream
@TheShortStory2 жыл бұрын
It’s an interesting song. As far as I’ve heard the label was pushing for them to do a rappy nu-metal track that could compete in the charts at the time and this one could have been the result of that. It differs from the rest of the album which is more “typical” Deftones. Interesting nonetheless. Really appreciated the perspective from your guest today!

Love your reactions bro, no bullshit, subtle dryness about how you approach your work (could be confused with arrogance). I don't subscribe to much but I find myself back here every day so thank you. A dive into Nine Inch Nails could be rewarding once you understand the noise. This is a variation of the song Pink Maggot, (this track is known as Mini Maggot) Pink Maggot would never have been a single. THe chorus from this song is the same chorus, which might be part of that disconnect. Deftones' first album has a lot more rapping. Chino, and the whole band have always played and experimented. It's amazing that they have such a unique sound, while having played with such a broad variety of sounds. Easily in my top three bands.

What I find is the chorus is the melodic touchstone for me. I'm not a rap guy so they exploration into the rap side is fine but they bring it back to the melodic chorus that I can relate to better.

2:38 most logical view on music. Imagine if everyone was conscious about this statement when listening to whatever music. We need to discern what is the artist purpose and if it matches with what I am looking forward in a song. If it doesn't match, that doesn't necessarily makes it a bad song. Such an intelligent statement

Their label wanted a 'hit single' to sell the album while deftones told them nah, we're trying to push different music not boring cash cow easy formulaic nu metal that was trendy at that time and that the band's choice of single would be a hit if the label backed it up. The label said either write a hit or we won't promote the album, so chino told the label okay look how easy it is to make this nu metal rap rock shit and he made this 'hit single' version of the album song in like 10 minutes.

My thoughts on it are, it both sounds like Deftones, but is also doesn’t sound like their other songs. Which is an interesting thing that I’m having trouble explaining. Overall i liked but didn’t love the song, my biggest compliant would be that the Chorus doesn’t seem to mesh with what’s happening in the music until the last time they use it. Up until then, the chorus and music seem to clash, almost like they’re trying to do opposite things from a soundscape perspective.

Chino said this song was very generic and they wrote it in a day, it was because the record labels wanted something more like limp bizkit who was blowing up at the time and they were like see how easy this is… also I’ve heard it called dream metal but they definitely created their own genre

The original black or red versions of the White Pony album (there was a limited version that came in red or black clamshell packaging) are the definitive versions of the album. This song was added on after the initial version was released because the label wanted a rap-rock song on the album due to Limp Bizkit being heavy on the radio (yep...like airwaves radio) so they recorded this to toss to the label and it ended up being their biggest single but weakest song, IMO. Chino has already stated that they recorded this just to satisfy label demand and that there was little thought put into the process.
