A conductor is VERY important for an orchestra that has 20-30+ people. Your sheet music has the tempo marked, yes, but everyone will have a different perception as to what Andante or Legato or Allegro is. Even the specifics like 140 BPM aren't easily determined on the spot without a metronome. That's why the conductor is there. He/she interprets the tempo and pauses so the entire orchestra doesn't have to. You'd have to be very lucky to find 40 people with such perfect interpretation of BPM to even come close to a tight performance without a conductor. Plus there's also elements of music that require the eyes to be on the conductor, such as a a Fermata which pretty much means "Stop for a while and continue when instructed". You'll hear it in dramatic moments where the music appears to stop out of time before continuing again. Sheet music works well for a single person or a group of 5-7 or so, but as soon as you start getting to around 10, you start to lose the tightness because everyone's weakest links will become amplified with there's so much inconsistent playing happening at once. It is VERY noticeable when you don't have a conductor. Plus, this orchestra likely didn't know the song a week before performing it. They are all great hired gun musicians but even they still are trained to follow the conductor because he sets the tempo.

also, another thing for having a conducter is the actual speed of sound (I'm not kidding) - when you get 30+ people together you need to be spread a bit cause, yknow, instruments need a bit of space to be played. And being in sync actually requires you to listen to what everybody else is doing, but since sounds travels a lot slower than light, it's gonna be slightly out of sync, especially if you have GIANT romantic style orchestras that are 80+ people, so the conducter is there so that everybody is in time, even tho it might not sound like it to the person who's playing. Of course, not the main reason but a fun side tangent I always liked.

@@windack768 THIS RIGHT HERE!!!! Another massive point that my band director constantly reminded us because, especially with Marching Band, the sound from the front left of the field will take longer to get to the person at the back right of the field, so the Conductor (or the Drum Major in this case) is there to minimise that difference. You're SUPPOSED to look at the conductor, not listen to the rest of the band.

so this song has 128 time signature changes, which is absolutely ridiculous! Also, the conductor was a kid who at the age of 22 started uploading his arrangements of Dream Theater on KZbin, the band got wind of it and convinced Berkeley University to provide him a full scholarship. he then went to perform this concert with his idols. a dream come true.

There is a video here on KZbin (titled "Counting Dance of Eternity" of Mike Portnoy, in studio, going over the time signature changes in the song. It's not the whole song just, just the craziest part of the song. It's audio stems of just the guitar, bass and metronome with Portnoy pointing to a paper with all the time signatures per bar, counting out loud while losing his breath and struggling to keep up. You could even say that those are the actual lyrics to the song itself. *joke*

You guys mean CONDUCTOR, not composer, hehe. The conductor helps keep everyone on tempo, something essential when the song goes through 108 time signature changes and you have so many musicians in on the gig!! BTW, the keyboard player, Jordan Rudess, uses sheet music throughout all their shows. He feels more comfortable with the sheet music in front of him, even though he's got most DT songs ingrained in his muscle memory - has to do with his classical training.

I think y’all mean the conductor. The best argument I’ve ever seen regarding the need for a conductor is, “we as humans are horrible at operating together as a group.” Not everybody has a metronomic sense of timing, even trained musicians. Similarly, it’s why click tracks exist. Dave Grohl had to use a click track on the Nirvana song Lithium because he kept speeding up when they were recording it… ‘not by a little bit, but by a lot’ according to the producer. Dave is known for having pretty accurate timing… but sometimes it happens that a musician needs a little help to stay on track. The conductor can also point out when a section is playing too loudly or softly. I think that drum set goes on for eternity lol. It looks endless!

By the way the conductor is essential. These people practice these songs. You don't need the sheet music. The conductor let's you know when to come in, when to slowly build or be dramatic when you drop that note. How gently, how heavy. They are much more than time keepers

Aside from keeping the tempo in the orchestra keep in mind that not all of the instruments play 100% of the time and have rests between certain parts so they watch the composer to be sure they're coming back in at the correct time. The composer also controls who is louder or softer at various times. The composer does much more than just wave his hands. Watch a philharmonic orchestra live performance. Maybe the Boston Symphony or one of those live and you'll see that the conductor keeps the music on the rails so everyone's in sync, the loudness is correct and exact stops and starts of various instruments. It's not like a 4 piece band that has practiced together over and over until they get in sync and create their own songs. It was fun watching you two react by the way. You should also react to Dream Theater - The Shattered Fortress (in BOSTON). Killer song and performance. Thanks guys!!

And a very warm welcome to the wonderful world of Dream Theater's most Progressive side. This is one of my absolute favourites from them. Loved your discussion about the conductor. Dream Theater does not need a conductor, and maybe most of the orchestra does not need the conductor. One part that the conductor does that does not apply (I think) is when he wants some part of the orchestra to play soft or hard or rising music etc. But I agree with both of You that in most situations - they are not needed.

Surprised Hollywood got it right lol! This song represents a sex scene in the album Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory. The whole album is a masterpiece and tells the story of a reincarnated murder victim discovering his past life as a woman named Victoria, who was supposedly murdered by her husband, but he knows there must be more to the truth than what is known. This is an album you need to hear all the way through.

One of my favorite bands. The conductor is at the simplest, the metronome or “click track” for the orchestra. When you are lost in the sheet music, concentrating on your part, it’s easy to lose pace. When you are just one person in a sea of musicians, it can be difficult to single out any other instrument that would be helpful in staying in time. The conductor is also focused on the big picture of the performance, and can signal to a section or individual who might be playing too loudly or too quietly. They can also control moments of silence, and ensure everyone comes back in at the same time. My lady plays multiple instruments. Was in band all through school, including college… She heard this song and exclaimed… “If they told us we had to play that in band, I would have quit and joined the robotics club, because that would be easier!”

First off, you say composer but mean conductor. The composer is the one playing the balancing act of task master charting out every player's sheet music and everything that comes with writing the music. The conductor is the one physically onstage with the baton(and is usually a role filled by an entirely separate person). Now the purpose of the conductor is not merely to keep time. Most of the players know to do that themselves, especially when it comes to the percussion section, whether by tapping their foot or counting in their head. The job of the conductor is to interpret the score as per specific notes, ensuring correct entries of ensemble members, to mold phrasing where appropriate and keep tempo when necessary. And the conductor does not only direct through arm movement but also with eye contact and facial expression. Also gotta Octavarium, Metropolis Pt. 1, and one of my faves, Panic Attack

Over 100 meter changes in 6 minutes, just FYI. Prog metal at its finest.. The orchestra and conductor was a one off thing. I believe this was a special show that they did at Berkley College of Music. John Petrtrucci, the guitarist, John Myung, the bassist, and Mike Mangini, the drummer, all studied there, and in fact Mangini was a professor there before joining DT! Normally tho, the 4 instrumental members of DT play this flawlessly without a conductor or sheet music. I've seen them do it! Guys a band has a set list which they play again and again. They take a call on what they want to do instead of having music written and played the way it is supposed to be. In an orchestra most of the time you don't know who is who. You come play and get lost. The notes are given to and you're spoken to in a group before the show happens yes you try a few things with other musicians check the sound and start. Musicians are placed in certain parts of the orchestra according to their timing to come in and go out. The composer is so very important in that scenario because he will point at each side and get the whole thing synchronised to the point. I used to play for a band and even today every now and then I play for orchestras as and when I'm called (even cover bands). I would die if I didn't have a composer in front with 30 to 40 musicians who you have never played with before.

Hollywood, think of it like this. Imagine you are tasked with rapping over a sample but you cant hear the beat. If smokey stands in front of you and claps on the beat would you be able to follow? There are times on a big stage where hearing the drummer is not always possible or you may be hearing an echo of the drums causing you to be slightly delayed. Furthermore in a song with so many time signature changes like this you may not be able to find the discernable downbeat of the measure and by the time you figured it out, you are now way behind. I've played orchestral arrangements and participated in marching band as a drummer / percussionist and following the conductor was imperative. In my current situation, I play live to an in ear click track which acts as my conductor so to speak as our timing has to be spot on.

You're right and wrong at the same time, thats why that discussion will never end. Yes they could all play by an agreed metronome and sheet music, but the conductor is the Interpreter of the orchestra.. which translates to setting a tempo and intensity for each part (remember, once it was the composer who did this, cause he couldn't play all instruments at the same time). In a band there's less people to agree so it's easier (and the tempo is set by the drummer usually). Sometimes they will follow someone as well, but that guy will be playing at the same time.

You don't need sheet music for complex music, honestly. Jordan, the keyboardist, is the only person in a Metal band I've seen use sheet music during their performance. I was in marching band and we didn't use sheet music while performing. We not only played the intricate orchestral music, but we performed shapes on the football field. Military marching band. Yes, having a Conductor helps with timing, but if you have the song memorized, you don't need sheet music.

You got it actually - the title The Dance of Eternity is a reference to the band's earlier song "Metropolis Part 1" from their second album (as it is from their fifth full studio album, Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory), where the final line of the lyrics is "Love is the Dance of Eternity." And in terms of the album's story, this instrumental comes in right after we learn one of the characters, Victoria, had been cheating on her partner Julian with his brother Edward. So the song is in fact a sex scene.

It's been 15 years listening to DT non stop, and the take on the dance of eternity being sex just Bleu my mind, because in the album, the next song is "home" and you should check the lyrics

Good Stuff. But on another subject are you guys planning on doing a reaction to A Perfect Circle - When the Levee Breaks Live at Red Rocks back in 2011 i think. It's a different version than the studio version and many including me think the live performance is better with Maynard and Billy just doing clean vocals with no effects, unless you both have already heard it than all good. Keep up the good work 👍

this is the musical equivalent of Wile E Coyote getting close to the Roadrunner, Road Runner saying "meep meep" and jumping to hyperspeed while Wile's jaw is hanging on the ground. the number one band that frustrates me musically, because you need a PHD in mathematics to be able to play this shit. But regardless, still love them.
