Actually, what I like about Portnoy's timing is that it's NOT all metronomically precise. He's really able to push or pull, to lay back in a groove or yank back a big crash hit. Mike Mangini plays the same DT songs with even more precision and more outright technical ability but, to my ear, he loses some of the humanity that Portnoy put into the parts.
@subutaynoyan5372 Жыл бұрын
It's not the humanity, Mangini's drum tone and also his sense of precision just makes it off. Particularly live, Portnoy constantly played with his arrangements, he rarely sticks to anything too long and makes it always interesting. Did you ever heard Mangini's interpretation of the outro to Finally Free? In the recent albums too, most things Mangini spent following Petrucci's guitar lead, Portnoy with fill it up with symbals and add so much depth you just couldn't get enough of the song.

Heheh, "perfect is not for everybody". Now when I say that Mike Mangini makes Mike Portnoy look loosey-goosey and a bit sloppy it should have the proper impact. _That_ level of perfection, though, _does_ come at a cost. For all his precision, Portnoy still has a lot of feel, and he looks like he's having fun. Mangini has... well, I mean, there is musicality and feel, but it's the feel of a classical musician in an orchestra. He plays _precisely_ the dynamics and feel that is written on the page, with an absolutely inhuman degree of precision. Portnoy is more like the feel of a great jazz musician. Sure, he hits the figures perfectly every single time, but in between he can groove a lot more.

Mangini is a technician for sure. Portnoy's drum sounds so different both tone and...I don't know just seems like he strikes them differently. Peart was like that too. You can just tell
@alexjudge89074 жыл бұрын
I saw DT live with both drummers and Portnoy is so much creative, Mancini is good recreating the old songs but the freestyle moment was a little messy in my opinion, and the new songs are less fun. I feel like the new drummer gave the rest of the team more liberty but I lost interest.
@barefootalien4 жыл бұрын
@@alexjudge8907 I agree about the solos... Mangini's solos are just a technique demo. There's no real groove to them like a Portnoy solo, and not even in the same galaxy as a Niel Peart solo for musicality and entertainment value. If Peart was "Oh, you didn't know a drum solo could be a concert all by itself?" and Portnoy was "Let's jam and groove for a while together," then Mangini's are "Let me show off what I can do! See, I can do one-handed rolls, and one-handed rolls, and also one-handed rolls, and polyrhythms, and one-handed rolls during polyrhythms, and did you know I can do one-handed rolls!?" However, I disagree about the overall sound and quality of the band and its music. I feel like they'd gotten very stale and samey toward the end with Portnoy, with album after album and song after song about alcoholism, depression, and insanity. Ironically, when he was fed up with its staleness himself but before telling the rest of the band, they did BC&SL, which I think was the best thing they'd done since Scenes From a Memory and parts of Six Degrees. I also feel they'd gone kind of off on a wild tangent before Rudess joined, with the creativity and soaring melodies of Images and Words and Awake giving way to what was, _for me_ (yes, I know most people go nuts over it, but I find it just kind of pedantic and boring) a dearth of their usual genius in Change of Seasons and then a bizarre attempt to reinvent themselves in Falling into Infinity. Just like Rudess injected new talent, ideas, and energy into the band, I feel like Mangini has done the same. I think a lot of their best work has been with him, and when I go to list my favorite albums from the current lineup, I'm kind of forced to just list _all_ of them, heh. I know a lot of people didn't like The Astonishing, but I think it was absolute genius, and an incredibly powerful emotional ride... A Dramatic Turn of Events was a very welcome shift in sound and focus for me, and has a couple of my favorite DT songs of all time. "Lost Not Forgotten" is just amazing for me, totally on par with "A Nightmare to Remember" and "The Count of Tuscany". "Illumination Theory" is, in my opinion, their single greatest epic, though In the "Presence of Enemies, Pt. 2: Heretic/The Slaughter of the Damned" comes pretty close as the absolute pinnacle of the 12-step era. Most recently, Distance Over Time is my favorite album overall, just edging out Scenes From a Memory at this point, mostly because SFaM is so dated nowadays and my own tastes have gotten heavier since then as well. If you haven't yet, I'd definitely recommend checking out "Barstool Warrior", "S2N", and "Pale Blue Dot" from Distance Over Time. If you don't like those three and think they've returned to their core better than ever, I'm really not sure what to tell ya. ;) I will admit, I haven't seen Mangini live. I saw Scenes From a Memory, Six Degrees (double-header with Queensryche, woot!), and Train of Thought (opened by King Crimson IIRC) but then life got busy, and then disability happened. :( It does help as well that LaBrie has gotten a _lot_ better in recent years. He's even almost good live! Almost. ;) Mm, and going down memory lane, I sure do miss Portnoy and Rudess's duels...

I'm really, really digging your channel, and have spend most of the morning absorbed by your reviews and feedback. The sound! Dream Theater's production is incredible. They kind of went the Steely Dan route with absolute precise engineering and mixing. Check out 6:00 by Dream Theater. World class drum sound. While we're on a fusion tangent, do you ever listen to The Mars Volta? Their first two albums featured a drummer by the name of Jon Theodore, and are a clinic in prog drumming. Cicatriz ESP and Take The Veil Cerpin Taxt are two I would recommend from a drumming perspective. You go "punk-fusion?", but just grab a listen and you'll get it. Cheers, brother. I don't know how I didn't see this drum teacher reaction video until now. This song is absolutely considered one of Dream Theater's most technically difficult songs to perform along with "A Nightmare to Remember" and "Erotomania" (just to name a couple of his absolutely punishing drum performances). As a former teacher myself, I love seeing people genuinely react to hearing someone like Mike Portnoy play when they hadn't heard his work before. Like any rock/metal lover, I gravitated first towards Neil Peart who is the North American Godfather of drums, but when I wanted to go more "metal" I thankfully gravitated towards Mike Portnoy and Mark Zonder (ex-Fates Warning) rather than weaker drummers in the metal genre (Lars Ulrich's name is often thrown out, erroneously, as a weaker drummer). Sticking towards the progressive metal genre allowed me to play music that isn't exclusively in the easier time signatures and taught me how to really use ghost notes. Playing along to Mike and Neil has made it possible for me to play in nearly any time signature and practice makes it possible to be proficient in those measures - measures people often avoid because they won't even attempt to play them. Mike is also a class act who rarely has a bad thing to say. For example, Dream Theater had a well-publicized acrimonious split in 2010/2011 and ultimately Mike Mangini (another drum legend) took his seat. Mike has never said anything bad about Mike and vice versa because they have mutual respect for each other's abilities and both bring unique talents to the table. I prefer Portnoy slightly over Mangini, but that doesn't mean that I don't love me some Mangini drum work - he's amazing. But, you can't attend 12 Portnoy drum clinics in the 1990's and not be fond for the guy. I literally went to every clinic he taught within a 250 mile radius of my home. Turns out the dude lives one town over from me.

I think Andrew must check Dream Theater drummer auditions.. Well 9 years ago, Mike Portnoy and DT seperated ways, the band decided to find their new drummer with an audition and share the audition videos with the fans. They also were looking for the chemistry between the band and the new member, so they've called all of them to NY and played the selected songs live with these drummers.Finally they've decided to continue with Mike Mangini. The entire video durations may take long, so you might not allow to share on your channel, but even if you don't share, I recomend you to watch it. The interesting thing about this particular performance of this song is that it was the first time that Mike Portnoy had performed this song in its entirety. The album this song was on had just been released but at the time of recording this video for a drum instructional DVD, the band had yet to go on the road and tour for that album. They wrote and recorded the song in 3 sections. Portnoy had said this was the first time he had performed the song as one whole piece instead of 3 smaller sections and he wasn't sure if he was going to pull it off. As we can see by the video he obviously pulled it off quite well.

One of their final great instrumental performances was WHERES MY THING, HERE IT IS , live in Dallas starting with some great bass playing by geddy Lee, and half way through there's on of Neil's final shorter drum solos. One of Neil's greatest drumming performances (I think) is from the snakes and arrows tour THE MISSION a very beautiful underrate song, a song with a great vocal and keyboard performance by geddy Lee, but keep an eye on Neil, every time I watch it Neil's drumming looks and sounds amazing ,his drums have a great sound during this song. Another difficult song from snakes and arrows tour, NATURAL SCIENCE, loads of transitions and another great performance by Neil peart. There's two good drum camera videos of these two songs from this show to study them more closely. I'm a huge fan of the time machine tour, but these two snakes and arrows tour songs, Neil's performances are out of this drumming world. LEAVE THAT THING ALONE is another great instrumental along with LA VILLA STRANGIATO both from the greatest live show THE TIME MACHINE TOUR, LIVE IN CLEVELAND. you can't go wrong with the time machine tour, even the funny INTRO into THE SPIRIT OF RADIO. As an ardent Dream Theater fan for years and a dude who has been playing these songs on drums for somewhere around 20 years, Dance of Eternity is nowhere NEAR Mike's most technically challenging song. DoE is a lot of memorization, but he has dozens of other songs that are way more difficult to play. Stream of Consciousness and the instrumental break during Constant Motion are prime examples. Mike shines when his precision and sense of groove overlap.

True story- in the late 90s a drinking game involved listening to Portnoy and DT and taking a shot every time you heard them blatantly ripping off Neil Peart and Rush. Needless to say an entire generation of prog fans were blitzed after two songs

I think that's why Portnoy appeals to people is because it's not that complicated and the drums sound punchy, it's almost accidentally genius

I think Dream Theater "Instrumedeley" is a better one to react than this. The instrumedeley combines several of their instrumental pieces including a big chunk of this.

A great drummer and a beloved friend of mine once told me to go and listen The Great Debate from Dream Theater. Now i'm pretty sure that this is the best drum song Portnoy has ever written so far. The song is from the 2002 LP called Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence.

Dream Teather is a "progressive rock" band. I don't know much about drums or this genre but i think the tempo changes as music progresses so drums must reflect those changes.
@zsjb_3 жыл бұрын
It's progressive metal not rock, quite different

Prog rock is more like pink Floyd or genesis
@joca13783 жыл бұрын
@@zsjb_ I'm a bit ignorant on the subject, a drummer friend of mine told me that long ago, but probably he also said metal. All the metal guys that i ever knew loved Dream Theater anyway. There's surely something special about the band.

Have you heard John Macaluso's ARK drumming? Another brilliant Prog drummer with awsome technique and ideas! Would love to see you reacting to his "Heal The Waters" or "Where the Wind Blows" drum parts! Theres a video of him on a Drum School in Florence on his channel! Even so, just for checking out both of ARK albums, they are amazing (ARK and Burn The Sun)! The most underated albums ever! Love your videos! Sry for bad english xD

How do you can memorize every time signature changer? I put 4 Crash, 2 China's, Ride and Hi-Hat... so, I can play 2/4, 4/4, 4/8, 5/4(8), 6/4(8), 7/(4), and 8/8... Also Gong for 9/8... and you can multiply them if you want to count the stacks and splashes... The question in my head...

@@AndrewRooneyDrums Sad to say he was long before my time and I never really was around any disco being born in the late 80's. My favorite at the moment is Matt Garstka, but am a big fan of Carter Beauford and went to see him live 5 times when he came to Atlanta. "#41" has been my favorite song for 20 years. And one of the concerts I went to I was lucky enough to hear a 20 minute extended jam of it before Leroi passed away. Best night of my life. If you want to do another Carter video, I'd love to see "Drive in Drive out". 41 may be my favorite to listen to, but Drive in Drive out is the most fun to play.
@KrucielBL3 жыл бұрын
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Came back for one last comment about Carter. I heard you say in your "Tripping Billies" video that DMB never really got big in your area. The video you looked at is actually a full length DVD from 1997 called "Under the Table and Drumming", a play on words from their 1994 album "Under the Table and Dreaming". You can find 2 hours worth of jamming if you want to check that out. I haven't been able to find any good videos of him doing "Drive in Drive Out" but "#41" is on that recording. He always throws way more flash into it live than the album version, but I first heard it in high school and was obsessed with trying to replicate all of the high hat work. I also related to him playing the same way that I did. I've played open handed since I was 8 years old, before I'd ever heard of him.
