As a history teacher AND from the Boston area, I feel it's my duty to impart this knowledge on you guys. Before I talk about the Famine, I'll just say another great reaction. You guys are some of the most likable reactors on here. I found you through your BABYMETAL reactions, but you've hit a bunch of songs I love (or at least know) outside of them, and it's fun to watch people discover a lot of them. I am actually a little shocked that you think the people of Boston are so nice, I always hear how we're assholes or just don't like talking to people. It's nice to have someone say they had a different - and good - experience here! We'd love to have you back sometime, and I'd be happy to do a bit of tour guiding around the area and/or grabbing a drink. Now, onto the Famine... So back in the 1840's-1860's there were multiple failed crops of potatoes in Ireland, this long period of time is known as the "Potato Famine". Potatoes were the staple diet of the Irish citizenry, most of whom were very poor, so growing potatoes was one of the easiest crops to grow in the climate of Ireland. Unfortunately, due to over-cultivation of the land by growing these crops for centuries, the crops started to fail to grow. This led MANY Irish people to literally starve to death because there wasn't anything else for them to eat. Some of them actually decided they had to leave. They couldn't risk it, so they left and settled in the new U.S., which was starting to be an up-and-coming country with endless possibilities for the future. They mainly came into New York or Boston. It's important to look at the British in this story as well, because they actually controlled Ireland at the time of the Famine. They were shipping THRU THE PORTS OF IRELAND tons and tons of food to go out to their other colonies and all over the world: meat, grains, breads, everything necessary to live, and they shipped them out thru Ireland and didn't give the Irish people a second thought on if they should help them and give them food. In at least one documented instance, a British Lord wrote to someone saying that the plan was to purposely not help the Irish and to make Ireland so bad for them that they would leave and this would lead to the British being able to take over entirely and live there! Think about how much of a monster you would have to be to willingly send food out of a country with a famine that is technically made up of your own people, and to do it on purpose to get them to leave so you could come in and take over. It is disgusting what happened. The Irish people JUST got back to the same population number that existed pre-Famine, according to their most recent census. It took nearly 180 years to recover their population from those who died and fled.
@LozzaMonTozza
@LozzaMonTozza 4 жыл бұрын
Thats a good summary except for the population bit. The population of ireland is still less than half what it was pre famine but that also owes to people emmigrating due to the troubles etc. The brits never really let up on the irish.

If you were like me and born and raised in Massachusetts, you grow up with this song. And yes, Bill Burr is from Boston :) specifically a town called Taunton which is right outside of Boston. One of my friends ran into him a couple years ago in the winter at the Faneuil Hall food court located in the heart of downtown Boston. Lovely city. There is so much more to Boston than just the sports.

The first World Series was played in 1901. It was a best of 9 and the Red Sox beat the Pirates 5 games to 4 behind 3 wins by a pitcher named Cy Young. The Boston fans travelled en masse to Pittsburgh and they drove the home fans crazy by endlessly singing a song called "Tessie." The Murphys do a remake of it, including lots of original lyrics from a sports fight song written in the 1800's. And it's a totally rockin' Celtic song, in my opinion it's their best.

Really interesting reaction. I'm half Irish and traced my Irish side back a bit. Apparently we came over here and were denied work for being Irish (big anti-Irish sentiment back then). We worked on a few plantations in the south as indentured servants. I have a newspaper article from waaaaay back in the day explaining how my ancestor helped a slave escape. If they were caught, both of them would have been hanged. Thankfully, they made it to the north and lived out their lives.

Love DKM! I'm from the Boston area, seen them a couple of times. Each time it was just ...epic. They do a lot of free shows too. When it comes to cultural appropriation there is a big difference between showing your appreciation for a culture, and exploiting it. People who do it for sake of controversy to stimulate a conversation that centers around themselves specifically should not be looked up to. Then you have the gray area of children's Halloween costumes (Disney's Moana for example) obviously it shows an appreciation for the culture seeing as how they look up to those characters based on those cultures, but the actual people of that culture (Maori) took issue with it because it included temporary tattoos and in their culture those are not a fashion statement. They are a right of passage that shows a dedication to their culture and their people. If someone was really trying to show an appreciation for the Maori culture, they would understand that including tattoos in the Maori style would not be appreciate din the first place. That is just one example of many where an attempt was made to show a love and understanding of a culture that turned into cultural exploitation.

I've seen the Drop Kick Murphy's a couple dozen times, mostly in Chicago and NYC. Met some of the band as well. Another similar band, but less punk and more folk is Flogging Molly. Molly kept closer to Pogues roots, while the Murphy's are more from the Clash mold. Other great Celtic punk bands are: The Real Mckenzie's The Rumjacks Lick the Tins (🇮🇪nice Elvis cover) Big Country The Pogues The Tossers The Cranberries (🇮🇪) The first 5 albums for the Murphy's are probably their best. Should especially try the Sing Loud album, starting at the beginning with "For Boston." The Murphy's did fight songs for the Red Sox and the Bruins. They also do a lot of charity work in Boston. Bassist, Casey owns a popular Irish pub. Boston is part of the Irish Triangle (NYC, Chicago & Boston) and is nearly 70% ethnically Irish. It's known in Ireland as Ireland's most western city. St Patrick's week in Boston is nuts.

Dropkick Murphys are an American Celtic punk band formed in Quincy, Massachusetts, in 1996. The band was initially signed to independent punk record label Hellcat Records, releasing five albums for the label, and building a reputation locally through constant touring and yearly St. Patrick's Day week shows, held in and around Boston. The 2004 single "Tessie" became the band's first mainstream hit and one of their biggest charting singles to date. The band's final Hellcat release, 2005's The Warrior's Code, included the song "i'm Shipping Up to Boston"; the song was featured in the 2006 Academy Award-winning movie The Departed, and went on to become the band's only Platinum-selling single to date, and remains one of their best-known songs. The band is known for their loud, energetic live shows. Check out the track "Rose Tattoo "

Because of the British, Ireland became almost solely used to grow potatoes. The Irish ate them constantly like a dozen different ways, used them to play sports, etc. Then when the crop failed the whole island starved and there was a mass exodus to the US to Boston, NY, Baltimore, and initially New Orleans. About half of the Irish who arrived in NO died of malaria though because they had no existing immunity, and because science was crude, people assumed it had to do with the Irish by wing made for the warmer climates and the arrivals in NO ceased. More came into Baltimore than anywhere else and that is probably because Maryland had been a Catholic colony. But obviously Boston is the most culturally Irish-American today

South Boston: last big city where cops are more afraid of the white residents than the black residents. I went to a neighborhood bar there once (I'm white, for the record) and felt lucky to get out unscathed. I'm convinced that it was my Irish family name that saved me from a beating. "Shipping up to Boston" is an old sea shanty. It was popular amongst Irish sailors who either sought work on British merchant ships or has been press-ganged into service in the British navy. Highland pipes and drums are Scottish in origin. They came to be associated with Irish immigrants because they were played by non-English units of the British army. Irish soldiers in British service wanted permission to celebrate Saint Patrick's Day in early 18th Century New York. They were granted permission, provided that the event have "a British military air". And thus, the first Saint Patrick's Day parade was born. After independence, American military units composed largely of Irish immigrants (ex. The 69th New York Infantry), police departments and fire departments composed largely of Irish immigrants, also adopted the practice. Saturday morning trivia....

Also a lot of Irish were once slaves of the British and they left to escape the tyranny but they were still ostracised here and took all the jobs that nobody wanted like law enforcement and sanitation.

thank you! i have been making this argument for years that 99% of what people say is cultural appropriation is in fact bs. you have to have a mixing and blending of culture to create new and great things. cultural purity literally never helped anyone make anything great. as long as you aren't mocking or using a culture to do harm to others blend away.

Primordial - The Coffin Ships would be a good Irish band to react to. Was about the Potato famine!
@tamisanlatherow3103
@tamisanlatherow3103 3 жыл бұрын
The Potato famine (1845-49) was caused by a combination of potato blight a fungus, which destroyed the tubers (the part you eat), and English governmental policy which denied aid to the starving Irish populace. Because of this, 1 million people died and another 1.5 million emigrated to the states, predominantly to Massachusetts, dropping the population by more than a quarter. The song itself has become a working-class Boston anthem although the song itself has nothing to do with the Irish per say. I agree with everyone else, you all should check out Flogging Molly. Great guys, very, very Irish. One venue I saw them at ran out of Guinness about three songs in and the band stopped the concert and just chatted with us until they were restocked!
