This is the "National Band of New England". Celtic Punk band from Boston. I'm New Englander living in another part of the US, and hearing the Dropkick Murphys always brings me back home. "Rose Tattoo" and "Tessie" are other great songs by them.

The lyrics are by Woody Guthrie. They've done a whole album using Woody Guthrie's unpublished lyrics.

The lyrics are mostly from a Woody Guthrie poem and applied to their Celtic punk style. The original singer was Mike McColgan who left to form Street Dogs with some mates from the Ska band the Mighty Bosstones. Their best stuff really is in their first 5 albums, with songs like, "Caught in a Jar, " " Finnegan's Wake ," "State of Massachusetts," and a great cover of Pete Seger's labor anthem, "Which Side Are You On." The original Murphy's were sons of union longshoremen. They've assisted with labor disputes and have done extensive amounts of charity projects, especially locally in the Boston area. They utilize multiple types of instruments in the studio and live, including: drums, guitars, keyboards, accordion, bagpipes, tin whistle, Irish bouzouki, mandolin, banjo and cello. While many local sports teams and athletes have used "Shipping Up to Boston," the Murphy's have also written and produced songs for teams such as "Tessie," for the Boston Red Sox. Their music has been used in multiple TV and movies. Lead man Casey also owns a couple of restaurants in the Boston area including his first, McGreevy's Pub.

Hey guys! This was also the theme for a TV Show in the US called Rizzoli & Isles, also in the Departed movie! These guys sellout all the time in Boston. And play a number of sellout shows in Boston around the St Patrick's day holiday. All the Boston sports teams use the song as well! Ken Casey is also very well know for his charity work. Cheers!!

Hi Guys, Great reaction!!!! This song was used in a Sam Adams Boston Lager (beer) commercial celebrating their 30 year anniversary. Their songs are on my St. Patrick's Day playlist.

Great looking video, great into, cool beat... it was all going SO well! And then dude started shouting. 🥴 To be fair, I liked the chorus-y bit, seems I don't mind so much when lots of dudes are shouting rather than one . I think it kind of dilutes it a bit so it sounds like a drinking chant. I could drink my pint of Guinness to this. 8.5 seems fair to me!

Rose Tattoo is a better song. In my opinion, anyway. Hope you react to it sometime soon. 😊 Either way, I love the Dropkick Murphys, and this song as well. Some more musicians to consider; The Dead South, from Canada, (try 'In Hell, I'll Be In Good Company', 'You Are My Sunshine', not what you're expecting.), Flogging Molly's 'The Worst Day Since Yesterday', another American Celtic band, and more Home Free! Lol.

Elaine, they are from the Boston, Massachusetts area....USA. There are a LOT of Irish descendants there and a LOT of Irish music is played there.

Great Anthem for Irish and all people. A call to freedom. When the right wing, people crushing Republican Governor of Wisconsin Scott walker used this song for his recall election campaign back in 2012, Dropkick Murphys told him Hell No and forced him to stop. Power to the People!
