I'm sure that many people didn't realize that Living Colour was a black hard rock band until MTV started showing their videos. People probably did a double take when they connected the song with this hard rock band which is black. A similar comparison was many years earlier in the early 1970's. Charley Pride was a black country singer, who amassed a number of hits, but people as a whole were seeing a black country music star at a time when country music was made up of white male country stars. Female country singers were also getting into country music, but Charley Pride was the trailblazer for a black artist to do country music.

@@amb2745 Chuck Berry..... Pioneer of Rock and Roll, Elvis, AC/DC, and many others were inspired by him. Rock has never been about color, it has always been about the unheard masses. There is no Race to it, Jimmy Hendrix is one of our guitar Gods. People are just too dumb to research history.

I was in my 20s when this came out in 88 in my opinion a lot of people looked at them as a bit odd or at best a novelty act. However this is based on my personal experiences. I thought they were awesome.

This was one of the first songs to get major exposure with an massively subversive message. It blew my mind. Metal always was subversive, but these lyrics were pure genius and a mirror that showed an ugly reflection. Still relevant 30+ years later. Even more so.

I remember watching MTV in 1986 (back when they played actual music videos) & seeing Aerosmith team up with Run DMC for their rap cover of "Walk This Way'. It was the first time that we saw rock & rap come together to form this fusion of music genres. Many folks didn't know what to think, some loved it (including me) while others absolutely hated it. But no one could deny that it had changed the scene & opened doors for new forms of music to be created. Then a short while after that in 1988, we were introduced to Living Colour - the first Black American hard rock-metal band to make it into mainstream media... And they're still rocking out to this day. :-) * fun fact - lead singer Corey Glover (no relation to actor Danny Glover) played a US Army soldier (Francis) in Oliver Stone's Vietnam war movie, "Platoon"

Living Colour had the backing of Mick Jagger, who produced a few tunes on their first album Vivid. Certainly couldn't hurt in getting record companies to open their minds. You forget that MTV was EVERYWHERE in 1988 (and actually showing videos nearly 24-7), and most kids probably saw this video before seeing hearing this song on the radio, so that shock wasn't as big as you think back in the day.

I was an intern in development for a studio but my parents were pretty connected with record people at the time I saw these guys in a club circa 1986. I called everyone. I frigging stalked them. They were so interesting & intelligent besides being obviously talented and had that it factor. They had already signed a record deal by the time I approached them that became this. But I will always appreciate that they showed up for me. I had inherited a gay bar because it was LA in 1986 & yeah, it trickled down to the college aged neice. They showed up in 87 and 88 - when they were big and on the radio- to do benefits I had. That was f*cking huge for any artist at the time much less black men. Ripped, gorgeous young black men. They risked a lot by that. I am forever grateful. And I miss that crazy time.

REACT TO: Artist: (Hed) P.E. Album: Broke Song: Feel Good This song is from the year 2000, and the genre was ‘rap/thrash’ but they are now classified as a ‘nu metal’ group. The singer is incredibly versatile and one hell of a rapper. This song features guest appearances from Serj Tankian of System of a Down, and Morgan Lander of Kittie; a Canadian all girl hardcore band that formed in the late ‘90s. They were all pushing societies boundaries to their limits at the time.

This is a good era to be an aging metalhead. Back in 1988, we got to experience this band for the first time, and now we get to experience them again for the "first time" (vicariously) through other people. All of us white metal dudes back in the day loved bands like this (& Fishbone and 24/7 Spyz and other funkified rock bands, or King's X) because they went so hard, just like metal bands. We considered this "metal," whether or not anyone else did. And anything that broadened our favorite genre of music, we liked. We felt like we wanted to tell people, "see? this is how metal can be; it's not limited to what you think it is." So anyway, yeah, it's fun, seeing so many people appreciating something from a genre that was sometimes regarded as the bottom of the musical bin, back in the day.

What I think is funny about this is that lots of people don't realize, most of the meta kids in the late 80' weren't the weird gang of murderers with leather and chains you see as stereotyped in movies now. We were the AP science kids that liked dungeons and dragons, those leather jacket kids whose parents beat them, the black kids that got ostracized at majorly white schools. It was the misfits table of kids that learned to sew patches on our denim jackets if we could scrounge one up. The skim color of the artists was irrelevant at the time, it feels like we've taken a step backwards to hear young people so shocked about incredible black artists in metal. Why not? Do it now!

I am older. 52 years on earth. I have seen more live shows than 99% of people. Living Colour at Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel in Providence Rhode Island was one of, if not, my favorite show EVER!! He didn’t just stage dive, he LITERALLY walked on top of the crowd! Highest energy and highest fun! Incredible!!!!!

Loved this band when this this song came out! Like Smokey said, it was a rarity to see a black band in heavy metal and most people found out about them on MTV back then.

This band is incredible, they play across all genres. I saw them as the opening act for The Rolling Stones in 1989. Saw them in Clemson South Carolina, the look of shock on most people's faces was unbelievable to say the least. Needless to say they weren't welcomed very well. Me and my cousin totally rocked out to them, while flipping off the crowd the whole time. I've seen them a few times since and they still perform and sound incredibly the same. Music knows no boundaries. ROCK ON.🤘🤘

Speaking of the Rolling Stones. Mick Jagger helped them get started. Or so I read somewhere.

I saw the open for the Stones in Atlanta in 1989. While I was glad to see the Stones, I bought the tickets to see Living Colour. I was teaching at the time, and used this song to teach the concept of ‘cult of personality’ in world history. My students couldn’t believe I knew the song and owned the album (yes, album). Earned me some cool teacher points - and got the point across much better than the textbook.

I was in High School when this song came out and EVERYONE knew who they were, we loved them for their music, skin color didn't matter, it's just skin! Take it off and you can't tell all of us apart! Learned that growing up and was taught to everyone. Sad to see that philosophy going out the window 😪.

"When a leader speaks that leader dies", but the other side of the coin came earlier in the lyrics, "When a leader speaks the refection lies" They were talking about both good & evil leaders...Mussolini & Joseph Stalin = Evil... Kennedy & Gandhi = Good...Cults of personality come in all shapes & sizes...

I grew up listening to Living Color in high school during the late 80's; them being an "all black band" was of no consequence, they're just an awesome rock band.

I remember my mind exploding when this video premiered. We saw them open for The Stones soon after, but my favorite Living Color show was several years later at the Avalon in Boston in support of the album "Stain". Vernon has one of the most original artists in generations. Corey's voice is one of a kind and despite their success and popularity they are still a very under appreciated band.

I saw these guys in the early 90s, and seriously, one of the best concerts I've ever been to. Vernon Reid (that awesome guitarist) jumped in the crowd, crowd surfed over to the balcony in the venue, he climbed up and ran through the crowd where I was. The crowd went absolutely crazy, I honestly don't think any other band had ever done something like that in my tiny country. My friend got to touch Vernon too.
