@@sriley064 self titled is awful in comparison to Metallica's actually amazing albums Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, and AJFA. It’s so mainstream that nothing else matters is literally the intro song on the latest Disney movie Jungle Cruise. If one of your "bangers" is played during the Disney castle logo on a movie, your album isn't "the best metal album of all time." Period. It's not a bad album. It has good songs. It's just a bad Metallica album. Even compared to KTA, half of which was cover songs.

@@sriley064 It's a good album, to be sure, and it's one of the most important re: their popularity. Some tracks absolutely slap (Through the Never, Unforgiven, My Friend o' Misery). That being said, it doesn't hold a candle to MoP, AJ4A, RTL or even Kill 'em All, musically speaking (except "Misery", that bass progression is cool as fuck).

@bryansproles2879

The overall theme of the album is controlling people, whether via drugs, religion, military, etc. So the hands controlling the graves could easily be the drugs controlling people to their deaths, or the military controlling soldiers until killed in battle. Very multi-faceted. This song is so amazing, not only because of the lyrics, but they also have that middle interlude showing the elated feeling of having the drugs in the system, and as the person comes back down, back to the main song...then James eventually screams "FIX ME!!" as he needs another hit... Amazing album from front to back though 😎

THE definitive Metallica song in my mind. The shifting time signatures, insane drumming, fast-slow-fast pacing, multiple guitar solos, and a complete showcase for Hetfield's voice, while displaying the melodic sound that began to signal the band's shift from true thrash to the more radio-friendly sound that would culminate in the Black Album.

The interesting thing about this song is that the musicianship goes with what an addict goes through. You have the fast opening which can be an addict looking for their drug of choice. Then you get the mellow part in the middle that's like the high they feel. Then it gets frantic like the person is coming down off their high and freaking out for more. It's subtle, but when you hear it, you can't unhear it!

Damn… I’ve never heard that about the song, but once you listen to it with that preface, you’re right…. I can’t unhear it now. I used to have that inner battle on a daily basis with pain killers and lost several years of quality life in my 20’s all from becoming addicted to opiates from a damn knee surgery. It’s the hardest and longest battle I’ve ever fought, but I finally came out victorious 12 years ago. Listening to this song again brought back memories of absolute despair, helplessness, the struggle to kill the withdrawals and how it completely dictated my life. Very emotional revisiting those feelings. Just reminds me of how hard it was to reclaim my life and this song replayed itself every. single. day. in my throws of addiction. Thank y’all for posting this. I truly appreciate it!!

I always view the transitions of this song as craving drugs and withdrawal starting. The beautiful part in the middle is the momentary release you feel when you finally kill the pain by getting high. The heaviness entering back in afterwards is coming down and the withdrawal symptoms beginning again. The "master" is the voice in the addicts head. They obey that voice by robbing family, assault, killing, to obey the call of buying more drugs and getting high again.

Nice reaction. This song is really well done in my opinion. Done about addiction and I think the 4 parts mimic that. First part with "obey your master " is the craving, second slower "nice" part is the high after taking, third part with "telling only lies" is the comedown/withdrawal, and 4th part back to, "obey your master " back to craving completing the cycle of abuse. It’s about the addiction. The promise of something good and the inevitable end. The beginning is about the addiction promising things to you, the second half is the person questioning the addiction not giving what was promised. Musically. The first third is fast paced and frenetic as in needing a fix, the middle slowed down calm interlude is when you’re on the high and the last third is the inevitable craving for another fix. To be fair this song live James says plenty of YEAHS throughout it lol. Plus in this song when he says "fix me!", you know originally he just said "YEAH!" but was told he has to stop saying yeah in every song so said fine i'll sat "FIX ME... but live I'm saying YEAH!... yeah...".

Fun story: we had a Chihuahua for many years named Casper (and who was a very, very good boy), and whenever this song came on, my hubs changed the lyrics to be "Casper! Casper! Master of Puppies, he's pulling my strings!" He passed of old age in March of 2020, but we love to tell people that story now. I told my boss the other day when he came over and this song was on and he had a good laugh and now he sings it to me at random times. :)

Guys it’s fine to be wrong about a song. I have friends who have been listening to this song for years and never got the meaning until recently lol. And the great thing about James lyrics is that most of them are written vague enough for the listener to interpret them to their own life and experiences

This song is a masterpiece of songwriting in general ! It's about how the drugs can rule your life. But even in term of music, when the song calms down, is to recall the effect of heroin : everythig seems beautiful, calm and nice, but quickly the need comes again and the music restart with a bigger riff and the final solo which is a bit "out" and very speed. One of the best songs ever written, metal or not !

This song is about James Hetfeilds addiction to drugs, the middle slowdown is the "High euphoria" of the drug, then it speeds up to the need for more. He's written alot of songs about his life, his struggles and mindset. The Yeahhhs came from black album and after. If you want an excellent song to react to do "Creeping Death" or "Fade to Black" both extremely meaningful songs. I've been lucky I'm an 80's Metalhead, seen Metallica 6x one of my best concerts to date!! And I've seen all the Metal Gods! Keep the reactions coming, I love seeing Y'all enjoying music that I still listen to, it's pure joy🥰❤️‍🔥🤘🎸 ps. Creeping Death live from Moscow, but pull words up.. its Best Live!! Apocalypse Song!!

One of their best songs for sure. In my opinion the melodic middle part represents the rush/high on the drug of choice and the complete shredfest after that is like the despair of the user. In the end the drug (the master) has the last laugh.

You guys are right on the theme is how the person using drugs becomes a puppet to addiction (jails, institutions & death). You can hear this from from one of the very first lyrics about pushing darkest clear meaning pushing brown colored heroin out of a needle until it’s empty. Then of course chopping coke on a mirror. The chorus describes how it (the addiction) doesn’t care, will laugh at your cries, “pain monopoly “ is the game you play, etc… good reaction!!!

An element that I think some do not notice is the agitated music, driving music then it dives into the floating, serene melody…. This mimics the agitated state addicts find themselves before they do the drug… once the drug hits it’s a relief and a floating serene sensation… which quickly leaves and it’s back to agitation and the crave.

It’s amazing on a lot of levels. Also Sanitarium was also on this album.
