Fun Fact: Cliff Burton used his bass in such a way that there are two bass solos in this song that are commonly confused as guitar solos. The first begins at 1:42 and continues on until 2:13. The second is found much later in the song after the bass Interlude. It begins at 6:36 and continues until 6:55. The opening sounds were achieved by Cliff using a wah wah pedal on his bass. -This song was in Guitar Hero Metallica.

This piece was my introduction to the band. My friends, who knew me as the classical music nerd, sat me down and said "you of all people HAVE to hear this!" Its structure is perfect Sonata form, like movements of classical symphonies- and this is due almost entirely to Cliff Burton's background in classical music.

The songs title Orion comes from the constellation of the same name, and is a reference to the songs "Spacey sound" bridge.. It was mostly written by late bassist Cliff Burton. It was recorded in Copenhagen. It has 3 different riffs that make up the structure of the outer layer, and a lengthy Bridge section in the inner layer. This song (instrumental) along with The Call of Ktulu (another instrumental) are incredible. Loved your reaction to this....well done boys. ...love you guys.

GREAT reaction guys!! What a wonderful way to start my Friday! Yup...this places in my top 5 Metallica songs...and I owe most, if not all of it to Cliff Burton (RIP). His bass playing was revolutionary. This track is undeniably progressive metal, and I wonder what path Metallica would've taken had Cliff lived on! I was 9 when I first heard this, from a school friend...it was unlike anything I had heard up to that point! Now as a huge Rush fan, you can tell that Cliff was influenced by Geddy. Cheers from Canada, eh!!

A few random recommendations for metal instrumentals: Testament - Musical Death (A Dirge) Death - Cosmic Sea Death - Voice of the Soul Obituary - Redneck Stomp Gorguts - Waste of Mortality Wicked - The Stellar Sunset of Evolution And it's not metal, but Steve Vai's 'For The Love of God' is 1 of the greatest musical feats of all time (I will never be convinced otherwise). If that song doesn't move your soul, then you probably don't have one.

Good morning, Trash Talkers. G'day. Not what I expected: I don't typically associate a term like "plodding" with Metallica, and that's what came to mind in the first section. Sounds are all there, 2nd part has harmonized leads, another interesting side-trip in my view, part 3 sounds a bit more aggro, just a bit, sure, dudes, go for it. Yeah, interlude, maybe. 😊 I could go several ways with suggestions: more off 'Garage Inc.'; the cover of early Pink Floyd's 'Astronomy Dominé' by Quebec's Voivod; I'm also interested in hearing 'Mr. Soul', 'The Seeker' or 'Seven and Seven Is' by Rush from their 'Feedback EP; or early Jimi Hendrix psychedelic freakout ride 'The Stars That Play with Laughing Sam's Dice'. Any or all would be more than cool. Deuces! ✌🏼😎🎶❤️🍁❤️✨️🕊

Fun fact: the very beginning was recorded using multiple bass tracks, which is unheard of because it's a nightmare to mix properly. Shows how much they trusted cliff to come up with something that harmonically won't collide with each other. This song is mainly a showcase of Cliff's compositional abilities. But we also have to give credit to Lars for coming up with that tasty weird awesome drum beat that makes 4/4 sound like some crazy mix of odd time signatures. Yeah, hard to believe but it is fully in 4/4

The crazy time-signature you mentioned isn't actually there. The song is standard 4/4 until the slow part in the middle where it switches to 3/4. The reason it sounds like there's a crazy time-signature is because Lars throws in a weird drum fill which messes up the timing if you're trying to bob your head along with the music.

6:56 that's just 4/4 but Lars makes a little trick at the end of the bar. For a drummer that's been ridiculed for years and years he did some amazing things like this on several occasions. I've listened to all kinds of prog all my life and I still can't hear the verses to Fight Fire With Fire the "right way" because the rhythm always turns around in my head and that's all Lars.
