Tatiana from Jinjer and Alissa White-Gluz from Arch Enemy, both of which you are familiar with, as well as pretty much every other "newer wave" vocalists (male and female) that growl in similar genres cite Mikael (the dude here) as being one of their biggest influences. Mikael Akerfeldt (the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist) is imo one of the best musicians in history. He writes and arranges 90% of the band's music. This song is a great example of his talent but it goes much deeper and spreads wider. If you wanna keep reacting to Opeth you should definitely check out some of their ballads: Face of Melinda, Burden, Harvest, Hessian peel, Windowpane, Benighted, The Lotus eater as well as the heavy stuff: Ghost of perdition, Demon of the fall, Deliverance, Blackwater Park, Drapery falls, Leper Affinity.

Finally some Opeth! here's a quick guide of their material: If you loved the melodic side, listen to anything from the album "Damnation" especially Windowpane and Death Wispered a Lullaby. Other melodic songs include: To Bid You Farewell, Harvest, and Benighted The newer stuff is just straight prog, would recommend Heart in Hand and Moon Above, Sun Below And of course their melodic prog death metal. songs such as Blackwater Park, The Moor, and The Leper Affinity Opeth has a huge variety of genres and sounds. Great reaction.

Glad you guys finally got to Opeth! My favorite band for almost 20 years now. You can definitely feel the different regional influnces from bands in the metal scene especially because it is such a world-wide genre. A lot of the European bands tend to draw influence from folk and classical much more than American bands, which use more blues influence, hence the grittier sound.

It's more the genre, I think. But Opeth is still has a very unique sound. It's Progressive metal, it's pretty common to have long songs consisting of many different sounding - but intertwining - segments. Opeth is, in my opinion, the best within this genre. Your mainstream listener/band is used to shorter songs and quick hooks, whereas a masterpiece like this fleshes out the riffs, has more depth and transitions. After listening to this kind of music for some time I find in nearly impossible to go back to simplicity. The Harlequin character dates back centuries, to French theatre of the 1200s, later adapted and popularised in Italian theatre of the 1500s. Originally a mischievous, evil character, it was typically adapted into a scheming servant by the Italians, still mischievous, but also romantic and typically, highly agile. The character often appeared alone to entertain royal courts, and has become known for the checkerboard, or diamond patterned outfit. As far as I know, Margot Robbie's modern version "Harley Quinn" is the first to be female.

There are definitely differences in sound of metal bands based on place of origin even within the same genre. Scenes sound completely different to each other. The most extreme example would be black metal where Norwegian stuff is completely different to a very distinct Greek or American scenes and shit.
