The song is in reference to a Lakota man, Leonard Peltier who the FBI illegally extradited from Canada to persecute him for the murder of two FBI agents killed on the Lakota Pine Ridge Reservation. It was basically a kangaroo court to get the judgement they wanted because they did not have any tangible proof of his guilt. Hes been in federal prison since the 70s. "In the Sprit of Crazy Horse" is a book that lays out in great detail about the whole situation, eye opening read for sure

Rage is not NuMetal, it precedes it by around 10 years. Their first album, on which this song was the last, came out just the year following Metallica's black album. And I'm with you, this is my favourite Rage song.

You're right that RATM isn't nu metal but they only preceded it by about two years. Rage's first album came out in '92 and the first Korn album was '94.

@@MardyBum100291 idk, I didn't really follow the Nu Metal movement, but I do remember it was quite big for 15 minutes in the early 2000s. What I know is that Rage is nothing like Nu Metal. Nor is Walk This Way, first of all because Aerosmith are a Hard Rock band, not a metal band, and that song has nothing of metal in it.
@MardyBum100291

@@mpmlopes "I didn't really follow the nu metal movement", course you didn't. Most bands changed their sounds to copy it, big ass bands at that, Korn and Limp Bizkit are still to this day massive bands, everyone followed it. It was impossible not to.
@bodiwire
@bodiwire Жыл бұрын
Rage isn't nu metal, but they did kind of unintentionally inspire a lot of nu metal. Limp Bizkit cited Rage as one of their main influences. Rage later apologized for having accidentally inspired Limp Bizkit 🤣

Yeah, more Rage against the machine. 😊🎉 I'm so glad all those years ago my mom told me about this band because it led to the heavy metal music that I like today. Speaking of heavy metal music. I was listening to a song the other day. Which I can't Remember what It was on Amazon Music and it was heavy metal and I swear I heard Eminem in the background rapping. It was one of the dopest songs i'd heard in a long time using the rap and heavy metal to get.

The video to Freedom was my first exposure to Rage Against the Machine. It had to have been in '94. I was 14 years old, and I was hooked instantly. I am instantly angered and energized when this song is playing. It is my absolute favorite, and I feel it gets ignored or skipped in favor of the more popular reacted-to songs from Rage. Thank y'all SO MUCH for checking it out! Y'all should also check out the movie Thunderheart. It's loosely based on the same events.

The character that appears in the last video, already in jail, is Leonard Peltier, he was an American Indian activist who was convicted of two counts of murder by two FBI agents in 1977. He fought against the racism and police brutality that American Indians experienced at the time. 🧐

Don’t ever say Rage is Nu Metal. Blasphemy! At the time they came out there wasn’t a debate about “what” they were. Zero people were concerned about the genre they could belong to. Everyone just knew they were dope. End of story.

RATM IS NOT Nu METAL. Rage was around for 6 years before Nu Metal existed as a genre. RATM came out at the same time as the Seattle Bands (Nirvana, PJ, etc) and shortly before Tool (Ps: this is Rage's greatest song and one of the top 10 songs of the 90s in my humble opinion)

FFS let's revisit some history so we aren't spreading nonsense. Rage formed in 1990, Korn's debut album was released in 1994. Pearl Jam were formed the same year but have roots dating back to the mid 80s, AIC and Nirvana both formed way before RATM in 1987 and Tool were formed the same year as RATM.

@@MardyBum100291 I agree Korn came out in 1994 but it took until 1996 until the term Nu Metal started to be used after bands like Slipnot & Sevendust also had some success and you are also correct that AIC, Soundgarden, & Nirvana were all around in the 80s while Pearl Jam was still Mother Love Bone but none of them had any "mainstream" radio exposure until 1990. as a 14 yearold in 1990 who thought they were super cooler than everyone else cause I listened to soundgarden, AIC, & MLBsince junior high school in the 80s it kinda killed my soul watching all "my" bands get success with the Normies

PLease guy! Listen Clawfinger... at least the song "The biggest the best". Yes i really want to hear your opinion about the "N word" song but i know thats a big no-no to youtube, even if you can listen it on youtube because it's a question about the word... A question to a certain people about why do they call themselfes that way while that word was invented to oppress them... So it's a littla RATM and SOAD type song from the (i think) mid 90's. Btw... Clawfinger is rapmetal as F... :D

If "nu metal" just means metal that's a bit rap like, Anthrax was the first. Probably even someone before Anthrax. I would never call RATM nu metal but I'd never call anything nu metal because it's not a genre, it's a pejorative term that metal elitists came up with to discredit bands in the early 2000s/late 90s.
