"Outshined" is pretty much a perfect intro to the world of Soundgarden. You guys are in for an incredible journey. Chris Cornell had a monstrous vocal range (to the tune of four octaves) and was an incredible lyricist. If you want to hear some of Chris's huge range in one song, check out "Beyond the Wheel" off of Ultra Mega OK. Every vocal sung on that song is Chris. Or go for "Birth Ritual" from the soundtrack to the movie, "Singles". You won't be disappointed.

Chris Cornell was one of the greatest singers to ever walk the earth. There was a supergroup in the late 90s called Temple of the Dog that he sang in. There is a song that they did called Say Hello 2 Heaven. This song is the best display of his vocal range. It’s a must listen.
@Rodzilla53323 жыл бұрын
Seems like you got the “mtv” or radio version of the song. They haven’t cut out much but cutting anything out of a Soundgarden song is a crime. They were all on the Seattle scene with Alice In Chains, Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, etc. They are the core part of what made grunge go mainstream. You must do some Temple of the Dog which is Soundgarden and Pearl Jam together for a tribute to their buddy who was also a great singer and died from an overdose. It makes for a great story. Say hello to heaven is the song off of that album but the whole thing is great.

Lyrically, you need to check out "Murderer of Blue Skies" off Cornell's solo album Higher Truth. Cameron Crowe called it "the most loving anti-love song I can imagine." It's about someone who promises you the world and then sucks the joy and beauty out of everything. "...murderer of blue skies, I can't wait to never be with you again, And I can't wait to lead a life that you're not in," set to one of the most hauntingly beautiful melodies you can imagine. They were already kind of big before the whole grunge thing blew up but since they were part of the same scene in Seattle and were friends with the other bands and collaborated with them and have many of the same musical influences, they're usually considered one of the big 4 to come out of that scene along with Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. For an example of how they were already a bit famous before Grunge was a thing, Guns N Roses covers them in their Spaghetti Incident album because their bassist Duff McKagan is also from Seattle and was part of that scene before the Grunge bands came around and before he moved to LA and met the other guys in Guns N Roses. Smashing Pumpkins and Stone Temple Pilots are usually considered part of the Grunge sub-genre but they weren't actually part of the same scene because they were from Chicago and San Diego respectively, instead of Seattle.

They were out of Seattle. The 4 big ones from the early era were, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Nirvana and Pearl jam. Then maybe you could throw Cinderella in there. they weren't close to those other bands but they had a few pretty good ones. And they weren't really grunge. But they came out of that Seattle movement. Mello!??? Ahahaaahaaa! Audioslave was not more laid back. They had more softer songs. But when they were heavy, they were heavy! Check out Cochise! Chris Cornell's favorite singer and probably the most influential vocalist on Chris Cornell's influence list, was Paul rogers, from Bad Company. If you listen to a lot of Bad Company and a lot of Soundgarden you will hear the similarities and the influence in Chris Cornell's vocals.

@Shan5 Yes, Cinderella was from Philly, my mistake. I hate it when I make mistakes like that. I'm 61 years old and have a catalog of music history living in my brain. I don't listen to much of the music I grew up with. maybe a few times a year I'll get on a little few hour binge. Almost everything I listen to these days are from 1990 till now. My two favorite bands are, KARNIVOOL and TOOL. Thing is, I've been listening to Tool since 1991 when they were only getting radio play on a campus station in Maine. Shortly after that they were playing Nine Inch Nails, Incubus, Korn... It didn't take long before those bands were getting played on the radio, after Nirvana came out with Nevermind, all of the hair bands were done for. the Seattle grunge scene hit and my musical world opened back up. I thought the hair bands were the worst thing that ever happened to rock music. I'm a musician and songwriter myself. The music that I make is far different than the music I typically listen to. Anyway, there's another band out of Seattle who I can't remember that was on The Fringe when it comes to being a grunge band. Guess I'm going to have to look it up. My kids call me the walking music encyclopedia. Kind of silly, but there is some truth in it. I know all kinds of ridiculous and useless details about the history of rock music. I also, selectively, love old hip hop and some of the new stuff. Anyway, I stand corrected. Thanks. I'm putting together an EP right now. Using some older material and a little bit of new stuff. Here's one of my songs from it. Listen to "Stranger" by James Brett Mason on #SoundCloud soundcloud.app.goo.gl/enJX2

Please check out Soundgarden "4th of July". An awesome song all around. The drummer Matt Cameron went to Pearl Jam after Soundgarden and is still there.

I had requested this song like 6 months ago and I was excited when I woke up this morning seeing you guys reacted this song. Yes I think this song was a good introduction as to Chris Cornell’s vocals but this is only the tip of the iceberg. Everybody is requesting good songs. I’m willing to predict that Sixx will appreciate “The Highway Song” from Audioslave the most but that just my opinion. And gotta appreciate Loc Dogg cause he does recognize iconicism when he hears it even if he does steal your whole ass chicken in the fridge. Enjoy the spiraled journey guys. We all do. Thanks guys!!

I keep hearing the term "laid back" being tossed around, (early in the video), and thinking about what I know of early Soundgarden and even Audioslave and just chuckling internally. You want laid back, try "Black Hole Sun" or "Just Like Suicide", otherwise give "Jesus Christ Pose", "Drawing Flies" or "Cochise" a listen. Little more "up" if you will...

Just an unbelievably talented man. I haven't listened to much of his solo stuff, but Chris Cornell 'Nearly forgot my broken heart' is a beautiful song.
