Glad you guys are listening to one of my fave bands. The Cure started in 1978-79. They’ve been around a while. Just like heaven and Friday I’m in love are their most mainstream, popular songs. A majority of their songs are very dark, moody and have a heavy goth sound. Another band I recommend you guys see live. Phenomenal 🖤🖤

Fun Fact: Robert Smith was in the throes of love when he wrote this song. His girlfriend, Mary Poole, he met when he was 14; in 1988, a year after "Just Like Heaven" was released, they got married, and it stuck. - This Song Was On Rock Band 3.

I didn't know Robert was from Crawley!! Born in London in 1956, my parents relo'ed to Crawley when I was one. My 3 next siblings were born there. We emigrated to Canada in 1964. Saw the Cure north of Toronto in the mid-80s. It poured during the opening act, 10,000 Maniacs, and there were all these forlorn bedraggled young goths wandering around hoping to borrow some hairspray. Robert came out in a buzzcut. 😮 Great show nonetheless. 😊🤙🏼🎶🔥❤️🍁❤️✨️🕊

As usual, you guy have your timelines all mixed up. :)The Cure were "Gothic" before they went mainstream... New Wave is a post punk movement, as is Gothic, so they have lots in common, and Joy Division may have been the first to do it. Listen to "The Hanging Garden" or "A Forest", for early darker Cure. It's amazing.

The Cure were probably at their “gothiest” peak of darkness during the era of the albums Seventeen Seconds and Pornography. Through the strength of their music and songwriting, they managed to keep a lot of that core audience as they moved into more mainstream territory. The cool thing is they legitimately fit in both of those worlds. They wee never trying to be something they weren’t.

I walked down the aisle to this song. It'll always be beautiful to me. One of The Cure's darkest album Pornography was released in 1982. They mixed it up all throughout their career. Although I don't think Robert ever agreed to the gothic title.

The Cure had some dark stuff early on - Faith (1981) is a fantastic album, melancholy rather than dark - 'All cats are grey' for example. I also love 'Cold' from the Pornography album. Apparently this period was the typical rock 'n' roll cliche - burn out from touring, depression and drugs. Fortunately they got through it and their susbsequent work became more upbeat and commercial. I really don't get this obsession with precise genres, music and people are much more complicated than that - unless they are purely driven by commercial forces. Cheers.

This was NOT "early Cure".This was released in 1987, The Cure had been around for a decade by that point.
@0okamino5 ай бұрын
Early? That depends on how you define it. This is from 1987, which is 7 studio albums (about 9 years) into The Cure, with another 6 studio albums after it (from 1989 to 2008), and their most recent tour was in 2023. You could call it early in one sense, or mid way in another sense, but The Cure was quite solidly established by that point. So, by usual standards, I don’t think it’s considered “early”.

This song is from 1987, the first gothic song by The Cure is probably from 1980 ('A Forest'). But of course you are probably thinking of the Disintegration era (1989) which included hit songs like 'Lullaby', Lovesong' or 'Fascination Street' when you talk about them becoming gothic after being new wave (which they did for a short period in 1982)

The Cure is a deep rabbit hole and the Post-Punk/Goth/New Wave(not polar opposites at all) rabbit hole is even deeper. All three are my favorite genres of music(almost indistinguishable and formed together feeding off of one another, though you can argue Post-Punk came first). Please jump down both rabbit holes and enjoy.
@Reani715 ай бұрын
There's nothing to argue here, Post-Punk was definitely first, gothic and new wave developed from it.

If you want to dive into the darker side of The Cure, a good place to start would be a live version of "A Forest". A live version of "100 Years" is also good. Morning fellas! I only know a few cure songs(my fav being "pictures of you".) I was introduced to this style of music by my friend Imelda who was a mod (same as goth I guess just the word they used for goth girls where I grew up in Salinas California early 90s)anyways,she loved the cure and Morrisy. I have always thought that the cure has a catchy sound to it that draws you into the music and has a unique style...🙂🤓

Thanks for the 80s nostalgia trip guys with The Cure who have endured more than most. If you are looking for darker from them check out the "Lullaby" or "Close to You" videos. For more UK 80s classics surely I'm not the first to ask for "Two Tribes" from Frankie Goes to Hollywood but I can't see it on your playlist. If any song has your name on it to react to it's that! The intro is epic and the video though comedic is strangely prescient in these times. Perhaps you can have it playing in the background when doing the trivia as the chorus lyrics are "When two tribes go to war/A point is all you can score". You got to do it my friends!
