Often the title 4degrees is attributed to the anal cavity being 4 degrees warmer than the vaginal cavity, although this is not an actual fact. The reality of the cavity isn't important, though, as Maynard has dismissively implied that the song simply about anal sex. Like you guys clued into, the metaphor of anal sex in this case is a fairly disturbing scenario where one person is persuading another person to open up and try new things (physically, sexually, abstractly and psychologically). Maynard often touches on Jungian psychological ideas like the Shadow and Ego, and this song could be a triple entendre of 1 - anal sex as a new experience, 2 - breaking down inhibitions to take on life as it is instead of how we prefer, 3 - turning your unconscious Shadow into an ally instead of an enemy at a psychological level. The first two are easy enough to pick apart line after line (even though he seems to focus more on one or other from line to line more than integrating the two together line by line). The third one, I think, ties the other two together and makes a cohesive song. If you ignore your Shadow (according to Jung), it will unconsciously act against you (your ego) and cause you to trip up, but if you integrate your Shadow persona with your Ego (not a one time act, a constant state of meditative/mindful awareness of your unconscious), you will be a more whole person, accomplishing more as you won't be unconsciously sabotaging yourself. If this third part of the triple entendre is intended, it makes sense in that it would feel uncomfortable and 'unnatural' like anal sex, but as any anal sex aficionado might tell you, when it is done right, it can be as good or better. It takes preparation, mindfulness and so forth to be successful and non-damaging. I think the key lyric is the "this brings us closer" bit, as simple anal sex does not bring one closer than cancer, et all, (except physically) but psychological integration and intimacy likely would. Sorry for the long comment!

Good read (except the formatting)! Jungian Theory is harder to understand nowadays than it really is. I think a big problem with it is the nomanclature (what names the theory uses, e.g. "Shadow" instead of "unconcious"), which makes it sound metaphysical (like star signs are). It is a good theory, though, and one should definitely look into motivational theories and research, if you just happen to have an affinity for this sort of stuff. Thank you for this cool comment!

This record was recorded at Sound City, which gives the drums a very distinct sound because of the building itself. Almost all the songs I LOVE from my childhood, 70s to 90s, were recorded at Sound City. Dave Grohl did a documentary a few yrs ago about the sound board(he bought it) from the studio.
