Rappin' With ReefBum is a LIVE talk show with host Keith Berkelhamer and guests from the reef keeping community. In this episode I chat with Ben Johnson from Captive Aquatic Ecosystems.
Ben is an aquarium maintenance expert who has many types of clients, including both high-end and low-end clients. His company is based in Houston, Texas.
Ben has spoken at MACNA and he has strong opinions about how things should be done with a reef tank. So we will talk about tank maintenance and husbandry, which are vitally important for having success in this hobby.
Ben also co-hosts the Reef Beef podcast with Rich Ross.

Love Ben’s approach (and brain), and I’ve employed much of what he shared for my personal system. Totally KISS-ed this tank. No unnecessary gear, just a skimmer, reasonable sump turnover, and spares. I use a controller for temp control and awareness only. Manual testing. 👍 and ❤️ and ❤️ and 👍!

so i just finished the podcast, i watch it in parts at work. I swear to god when i added a melanarus wrasse and the 6line from my 20g into my bigger tank they devoured the red flatworms. its been over a year and i dont have a single one in that tank, never need flatworm rx for that tank

For glass cleaning I switch between RODI water, vinegar, and 91% isopropyl alcohol. Saving up for a Tunze magnet using a fresh razor blade for inside glass every week or two for now.

I feed my micromussa lordhowensis defrosted blood worms. They’ve turned from just a single color to rainbow and are some of my fastest growing corals by this spot feeding once a week

Refugiums obviously do something, depending on many variables. I don’t find them very effective as opposed to what I am doing currently as far as maintenance service goes.
