It's like someone at Disney grabbed Julia Michaels, pointed at Ready As I'll Ever Be, and told her "Do that". The difference is that Ready As I'll Ever Be is a _very_ character-driven song, while Knowing What I Know Now just... Isn't. Ready As I'll Ever Be also works in the villain _and_ gives the side characters something to do. Knowing What I Know Now, on the other hand, exclusively focuses on the protagonist, a single star, a goat, and seven teenagers who we don't care about. Ready As I'll Ever Be has depth, Knowing What I Know Now doesn't.

@@PurpleTheTapricorn915 Exactly, there is stakes and tension in Ready As I'll Ever Be, as we switch between Varian building the automatons, to Cassandra rallying the guards, to Rapunzel and Frederic preparing to sneak past Varian's defenses, to them all coming together in the final chorus, leading up to the finality in the final repeat of the title. Knowing What I Know Now doesn't do anything close to that, so instead of getting this intense punch, it feels more like a mosquito bite. That, and it suffers from Wish Lyricism Syndrome.
@dudnika-anti4 ай бұрын
there's a reason "ready as i'll ever be" has been used in so many animatics across many different fandoms. good music is timeless. there's just a really universal feeling to its lyrics. it describes a feeling every human has felt at least once in their life. and the contrast present with the different perspectives in the song (varian vs. cassandra vs. rapunzel) is also strangely personal and familiar. the song is just so human, no wonder it spoke to so many people. not to mention that jeremy jordan, eden espinoza and mandy moore are all excellent singers whose voices work well together, even if their styles are all different. i am not exaggerating when i say that a college paper could be written about the music in this show.

Something about the shift in the timing in Crossing the Line is it makes the duet section feel more conversational. "This has to stop now" is replied to with "No, THIS has to stop now!" because of the extra syllable pushing Cass into the stronger rhythm, which also shows how Rapunzel is about to accidentally push her further off balance into full villain mode. Raps pushes Cass onto the Rhythm because she's unintentionally reinforcing her making this decision.

In Sideways' video on the Wonder Woman theme, he said that strings are considered a more feminine instrument and that an electric guitar gave the theme a strong and feminine feeling. I wonder if the Tangled song writers were thinking something similar.
@SheegogProductions4 ай бұрын
I was thinking that the choice of guitar vs electric guitar was a reflection of Rapunzel, since from her very first song in the movie guitar has been associated with her (don't forget the gorgeous finger picking in I See the Light, either!). Here, since she's so angry, the guitar gets literally amped up, and even a little distorted until she calms down and tries to reason with Cass.

On the note of ungepatchka, I've been making similar arguments towards many highly technical artists over the years, admittedly most in metal and jazz. I once saw a jazz trio live that, at the time at least, consisted of three absolute masters of their instrument at the top of their game, and while there's no denying what they played was incredibly complex and technical, it - to me at least - felt like form over substance to the max. It was a very neat composition and all, but it felt like a series of songs written to showcase musical talent instead of to be a good song. In a similar vein, there's a reason there's only one Dream Theater song that ever achieved mainstream success, to the point that the band even released a compilation CD called "Greatest Hit (... And 21 Other Pretty Cool Songs)", that reason being... Well, okay, there's more than one reason, but a big part of the reason is definitely that their music much too often focuses on being technical showpieces over music, and they're far from the only band that does this. Less really is more a lot of the time.

It's a great show, especially the music. I just wish they had given Cass a better motivation from her villain turn than "I want to be the main character" and "Rapunzel stole my [spoiler];" the former makes her seem like a narcissist, and for the latter, the truth, as Cass knew, was actually the other way around. It's frustrating when the motivation for Varian's villain turn is so much better: Cass feels betrayed for no reason, but Varian WAS betrayed (albeit for an understandable reason).

The other fun thing about Crossing the Line is that it's a song that's very very clearly written from Cass's perspective. Like--she's actually being pretty unfair to Rapunzel, if you think about it? Rapunzel has a nice life now but had a distinctly worse childhood than she did, after all. But it's not about the literal truth or giving a measured, balanced opinion; it's about how she *feels* and that comes through so clearly and so well.

The songs are pretty great. However... the actual writing is pretty weak. Cassandra's villain arc was quite nonsensical and artificial. The story presented far too many bonding moments between her and Rapunzel for the betrayal to feel in-character. Varian's villain arc was a little better but it was tainted by Rapunzel's inconsistent characterisation in S1. The moment when she just stood there when the guards threw Varian out of the castle even though SHE was in charge was soooo out-of-character. And her inaction in regards to checking up on Varian after the snowstorm was also off-putting.

The songs are great but the 2 main characters turning villains never felt all that believable to me and more like it was done for cheap drama. That together with the constant edgy imagery of darkness and spikes, makes it more a show that i wish i enjoyed, then a show i enjoyed.
