What gets me about the 'German representation' argument is that I have not seen one German complain about this or even care about this. (Almost like they have more important things to worry about than some fictional princess.) If anything, they would probably have their own version of the fairytale that would be way more accurate and authentic to the story in the first place tbh. The only people I have seen cry about this is white Americans and Disney adults that probably can't even point to Germany on a map or name a German city that isn't Berlin. This comment is gonna be so overly long, but damn I love this vid. This thing has rly been upsetting me. Seeing ppl put up a picture of Avantika, say they’d be outraged if she played Rapunzel, then show collages of blonde, light eyed women they’ve deemed suitable to be a princess in this story. Ugh. Ew. So unsettling. Often straight up gross. And the lack of creativity in these ppl is just ridiculous, too!! These overly faithful live action remakes literally serve no purpose. They’re just watered down versions of cartoons that acc brought smth original and singular to audiences. The only way for these dumb, cash grab remakes to justify their own existence is to change the story or it’s context. I wish Disney would set a Rapunzel remake in a sort of amorphous, generalized, fantasy Indian subcontinent just like they’ve historically done w Europe. I wish they’d cast an up and coming south Asian actress. I wish they’d write new songs for it with orchestrations inspired by Indian classical music. And- oh my God- I would literally burn cities to the ground to have Rekha play Mother Gothel. Slinking around in a red silk sari looking all sexy and evil. When?? Well, never, cause that would require Disney to be original for once and take a creative risk. Can’t wait for live action Rapunzel with worse versions of the songs from the original movie, one awful original song to nominate for the Oscar, and an actress who was born with brown hair and who’s not of German descent, who all these internet crazies will adore anyways. A thing that I don't think a lot of people get is that there are other versions of fairy tales. Like, yeah, the movie is based predominently on the German version, which is the best known. But Rapunzel is more or less an adaptation of an Italian version, and the story belongs to an international fairy tale type called The Maiden in the Tower. I haven't specifically found a documented Indian eqiivalent, but that doesn't necessarily mean that there isn't one. There are Greek and Egyptian and Middle Eastern versions, even. It's a very old oral tradition. The story belongs to everyone.

I feel their acting chops will shine more when they are not competing with the original iteration of the character, at least when it comes to all of these remakes. Broadway and theater are know for doing famous plays over and over again and bringing their own spin on them. What am I saying? Oh yeah. In all seriousness, the fact that people have made the argument about race swapping Disney characters that are already POC and that POC alter their appearance, too.... The race of characters like Tiana is very much a part of her story. It wouldn't thematically make sense for a white woman to struggle with issues of misogynoir and class in New Orleans during the Jazz Age. I hate hate hate the argument that no one should ever call out appropriation ever because POC do their hair and makeup a certain way. It's as if there is a historical, cultural, systemic precedent as to why POC participate in altering their appearance. It's as if certain physical traits and modes of dress attributed to POC were illegal/prosecuted. But I don't expect anyone who makes that argument to think of anything past their bubble.

One of my main thoughts about this discourse is that: the animated movie already changed a lot from the original fairytale, why is the live action not allowed to deviate from the animated version?? Like, in the Little Mermaid fairytale, she turns into foam at the end while the Disney animated version she gets happily married to the prince. The Tangled movie is very different from the original Rapunzel fairytale! It's all about translating a story into a different medium for a different audience. Why do people only care about the color of a character's skin, and not the various other things that are different from the original fairytale?

On the topic of a South Asian actor playing Rapunzel ... the discourse, sadly, focuses too much on what Rapunzel is "supposed to" look like and also on race, because it's ultimately all about racism and colorism and so on. BUT I think the much bigger issue is that I would hate to see an Indian cast portraying a story, that in its essence is _white_ . I want an Indian cast in a story that captures an Indian essence. An Indian story. (Also let's not pretend that Disney's Rapunzel has a German essence, that story has been Americanized AF.) There could be an interesting case to be made for making an Indian adaptation of the Rapunzel story (like Indian adaptation of Jane Austen novels), but you can't do an adaptation like that justice if you're also trying to pander to Disney fans and trying to stay true to the Disney movie.

I wish they'd run with it and cast her tomorrow. I can't unsee it. If they insist on sticking to the image in the first film It would have to be Amanda Seyfried, but that's so predictable... but also they were both Karen from Mean Girls...

I want Hollywood to change an originally nonwhite character white just to get these people to shut cause it's starting to get old hearing people complain about the race of a character which is arguably one of the least important things about them
@Eloraurora5 ай бұрын
They've done that already, decades ago, with real-world historical figures: Genghis Khan played by John Wayne.

The way y'all care and argue about your Disney princesses/characters/children's movies as adults is very funny and wild to me 😂😂"Rapunzel's German"but her ethnicity is thrown out when y'all choose non-German girls(most of them aren't real blondes) including Taylor Swift(singer not an actress)😂😂and those of y'all saying Disney should create new stories of diverse people are the same people who will say Disney's WOKE/DEI so what should Disney do for y'all now there are horrible things happening in the world y'all should worry about and last i have a solution to your problem;seek your therapists cause the hate/racism is now becoming a disease and get jobs😂😂😂

Rapunzel itself is a german fable AND name. So yeah no Rapunzel cannot be race swapped. HOWEVER, you could adapt the story to the indian culture which would change the name and some part of the story. The general structure of the story could remain the same but have minimal changes so it becomes its own thing.

Honesty it's pretty annoying, bc this people are racist, but not everyone who cares for characters staying accurate to their originals is doing it out of being racist. For example, Idk if you kept up with it, but in the original Percy Jackson movie adaptation there was A LOT of backlash for annabeth being a brunet (still white), way more than ginger grover being played by a black actor (they actually made him funny, and the least hated part of the film for most of the Fandom). Heck, Percy's eyes being blue instead of green got more backlash than black grover. At least from deep in the Fandom where I was Recently, I've been called racist for not being a fan of the new casting for the series, wich made me super mad, bc while I wasn't thrilled with black annabeth I tought it was kinda justified, bc the original had almost only white characters, and I get wanting to add representation, but I was actually really upset with blond Percy, bc you could just dye his hair or add a wig, or whatever, there's no reason why they wouldn't stay accurate to the books (black hair). So I was actually, at that comment that I got called racist as a reply, complaining about how they weren't even trying to get the characters right, thinking of Percy, but left it vague, but ofc, if I was complaining about the casting of the new series, I had to be a racist complaining about black annabeth, I guess, for racist reasons Nerds care about the characters from the franchises they like and from their childhood not being messed with, that's a whole thing. Particularly I think a character of color being portrayed as white is double bad, bc it messes with the character + erases representation A separate thing from this racist people having issues with people of color. And unfortunately those became kinda intertwined with the terrible nerd to alt right pipeline, but some of us still just care about the integrity of our characters, that we care way too much about, bc we are nerds and that's what nerds do It feels like violating something sacred, to alter what was already perfect, etc. Nerds being nerds and taking pop culture too serious, but it's our thing In this case, most of this people are too old to have grown with tangled and even more to be current fans, so it's mostly racism anyway, but please don't let it taint your idea of everyone who cares about accurate casting. We are annoying as hell, but not all of us are racist

The paragraph before the last kinda disregarded Disney adults and some of the animation fans, wich is ironic, as a huge fan of some Disney-pixar movies myself. It was just misconstructed. I meant that bc of their age most of those people wouldn't be fans of tangled, but not that that there couldn't be such fans in the middle of them

Firstly I say this as a black person. This is reminding me of the black Superman movie discussion my brother told me about. People got up in arms about it of course. There was even a black youtuber who said "KEEP SUPERMAN WHITE. SUPERMAN NEEDS TO BE WHITE." There was a rumor of a Superman movie where superman would be black, but there would be no consequences to him being black in the story. I do think those consequences should exist in that story, and it would give an awesome and interesting perspective. But yeah it wasn't just the usual right winged white supremacy DC bigots getting mad about this. Black people with internalized white supremacy were angry as well 🙄. How exhausting.

Shoot, I am reminded of the black 007 discussion as well. Its exhausting dealing with several the outrage from these anti-woke types and these are the same people who will call you a snowflake for calling out racism or accuse you of pulling a "race card" while they foam at the mouth over fictional characters.

Well, first of all, the movie isn't actually being made; it's just a rumor. Second of all, fairy tales aren't just for children, they're for EVERYONE. Third, people don't like change, or to see their nostalgia being RUINED. Finally, yes, Rapunzel was in fact a European fairy tale, written by a WHITE person! But I understand that we're all entitled to our opinions. And people who mentioned that Rapunzel is a European story, including myself, are just stating the facts. And yes, I do agree with those who think that Disney needs more originality. Well, not just Disney, but Hollywood, in general.

Okay but in my opinion it is disrespectfull to the original writer of the story. I will put myself in the writer of tangled's shoes (ik it is fairytale from Germany yet doesnt have a spesific writer) and i will be recreating the same scenerio happening to me. Someone just changed the all physical traits that i personally insisted in my story. I honestly would be hella mad cuz it was my imagination yet my characters. If i wanted them Asian i will say they are Asian with dark colored hair. If i wantedd them to be Indian i will also mentioned them as it is. Just changing someone's story just because making awareness is just an excuse and let me tell you its an awfull excuse. If you are still saying that it is okay since it doesnt effect the story then lets make all the princes genderbent and make Disney a gay hole ? Still the same pilot , still the same story but i wanna make my own Tiana , just big white light colored hair and makemy own Naveen Asian :)) Do you have a problem with that considering you are okay since its the same plot you shouldnt
@Peacebewithu345 ай бұрын
It seems to me you clearly didn't even listen to the video and come up with a conclusion (as always) by saying, "what if Tiana is white"? Yet, princess and the frog originally is German and Disney changed it to a black princess with New Orleans culture.😑
