Samuel Rothafel (1882 - 1936), known as "Roxy", was an American Impresario who opened the then world's largest movie theater, The Roxy Theater, in 1927, in New York City. Staffed with a 110 piece orchestra and a stable of regular singers and performers, Roxy also extended his palace into a variety radio show, first known as "Roxy and his Gang" from 1922 - 1925, then to "The Roxy Hour" from 1927 - 1932, the latter broadcast directly from the Roxy Theater's in-house radio studio.
On September 17, 1928, to commemorate the 1928 Chicago Radio Show Trade Exposition, Roxy invited Harvey Firestone, Henry Ford and Thomas Edison to appear as guests on his show. Since Thomas Edison Industries had an interest in recording any appearance of Thomas Edison on radio, the 2nd half of this show was recorded. To jump to the special guest segment, go to 8:19 in this video ; to hear Thomas Edison directly, go to 13:48 ; or best of all, play this entire video and enjoy this extremely rare example of a 1920's variety show recorded from an original broadcast, featuring The Roxy Male Quartette, Gladys Rice, Doug Stanbury, and others, and hosted by Roxy himself.
This rare early broadcast is listed as authentic on Elizabeth McLeod's 'Documenting Early Radio’ page
