Phil Perri There were very few options available on the 6 Pack Rd., Runner that came with the standard lift off fiberglass hood, the Edelbrock three two barrel manifold , Special x 70 series 15 inch Goodyear Polyglas red lines mounted on black wheels with chrome lug nuts. I don’t recall all the details, but it was a car with very few available options. I think that very few dealers ordered most of their cars via customer special orders. Yes a few did Nickey, Tasca and Grand Spaulding being notable exceptions. The car in stock was the car that all sales people pushed. The reasons are many and obvious. In stock means a number on the board, a commission slip, and another number for turn and earn. The flooring stops and the f&i has a victim. Cars in the order bank are great and just a bonus for a sales team.

What the vast majority of race fans don't realize is this: Even though the tires are bias ply, and are the OEM stock size, I was told by one of the racers that the COMPOUND itself is the key. It's a very soft, sticky, drag type rubber. This kinda clears up why these cars hook so well.......

These two cars were built for the FAST series I believe? Factory Appearing Stock Tire. Both have waaay more cubic inches than advertised. Everything is worked over, transmission, torque converter, and no doubt 4.56 gears. They also have a stock series too, I believe it's called purestockmusclecardragrace. I use yo go these races every year until in ohio until they moved them to new York and now michigan. They run factory repop tires that are damn near slicks and they air the tires way up for those belted radials. That's how they hook up so good. The camshaft are all custom grind to take away some low end torque also so they can help with getting off the line. All these cars and their owners are awesome! I use to talk to them every year.

Great race. Those 396's are often overlooked for the 427 and 454's but they were definitely under rated. Like that 440 with a six pack though. The 426 Hemi was a cranky motor and took a lot of maintenance on the street whereas a 440 would often beat a 426 at the stop light to stop light encounters on the street. I have always preferred the big inch 455 HO and SD of pontiac fame but also like the 455 stage one Buick with its monsterous low end torque. Still, I am a torque junkie at heart so I am jaded. I like the hole shot and often, a 1/4 mile winner will get its butt beat by the same car it beat at the track in a stop light to stop light encounter. Losing the hole shot then reeling a car end on the last half of the quarter mile is impressive but not practical on the streets. Unless you are racing on the highway....then that changes things. I once had a 1973 Trans Am with a built 455 that I stuck a 2.56 positraction rear end into out of a 1975'ish Trans Am....yes, you could actually get that rear end if you special ordered it in 1975 for your 400 ci trans am....lol. Even with the monster low end torque of that 455 it really suffered on the take off.....BUT on the highway.....with that turbohydramatic 3 speed transmission.....and stock stall......on the highway I could look over at you at 70mph and wave bye bye and walk off and leave you even if you were in a sports car. I ran a Jaguar something or another once with that Trans Am with that ridiculous rear gear and we were neck to neck up to around 150mph one night on a deserted stretch of highway.....I had a little more left but I backed off since I was not that trusting of my tires above that speed. That Jag kept going and walked on away from me and he must have been doing 160 or more. I just let completely off of it and coasted back down to 70mph.....lol. No overdrive back in those days....lol. At least not in US cars. Still, going that fast on a public highway....even at night with no other traffic was beyond stupid and I see that now. Just stupid shit we do when we are young and dumb. I just take my shit to the track if I want to see what it will truly do these days.......and as far as top end...well, I would find some closed track to do that at vs doing it on a highway or country road. Just waaaay too much stuff could go horribly wrong at 150 or better mph. Shit, I knew a guy that hit a cow once out it the country and he was not even speeding....just going about 60mph and came over a hill and BAM! COW! MOOOOOOO! Crash! LOL Luckily he was in a full framed car....a 1987 G body Buick Regal....still tore the shit out of his car and critically wounded the poor cow. Yep, just way too much shit to go wrong on the street going at high speeds. Even the stop light to stop light wars...while fun....are not if you get a nice drag racing ticket. I was lucky and worst I ever got was excessive acceleration once. NOPE....test and tune night at a local track for me.....may only get in three runs if I am lucky but at least it is controlled and somewhat safe.....somewhat.....lol. Shit...got off on a tangent there. These cars are both nice and I would like to drive either one of them for a blast down the 1/4 mile.

For the family car he bought a 1969 chevelle ss blue/black vinyl top with 4 speed and 425 horse factory aluminm head 396. The dirt spread boss had a nephew with a big block 1968 ford mustang and it would not touch the chevelle so, he went and traded his mustang for a 1969 dodge r/t charger 4 speed 440 six pack car. Wrong, HP and cubic inch size are different things on 396's... the 425 HP 396 was the earliest 396" engine and lacked the torque of the 440 Six Pack engine... They were 396" from 1965 to 1968, then quietly enlarged to 402", but still called 396...

For some reason, that 1965 corvette with the 396/425 was only available that year in the vette. Nothing else? In 1966, the 427 came out in the vette. Why didn't GM brass allocate that 396/425 to at least the camaro, chevelle, and impala? I'd love to talk to some of the old guys that were in charge of these respective departments. I'd say they would have some cool stories as to why they did what they did!

Im an experienced Mopar engine builder. The 440 is a great engine. The only drawback is the standard (B) series heads. They breathe great on a 383 but limit the upper RPM capabilty on a 440. More lift and bowl work really wakes them up. Many here are purists and keep these engines stock including that very docile grocery getter cam.

The 396/375 had 11.0:1 compression and a solid lifter cam...the 440+6 had 10.5:1 compression and hydraulic lifters. That probably explains the closeness in power despite the difference in cubic inches. The Mopar 440 had better street manners than the 396/375 did. Up the compression and slide a solid cam in that 440 and it'll smoke that 396 every single time. Ryan Thomas yeah I'm a die-hard Dodge guy. However just listening to the idle of the 440 in the initial transition up, that cam is not stock. 440 6-pack cam profiles would never have put that large of a note in the exhaust. They were actually a lot more modest. The cam sounds more like a Mopar purple shaft grind around 484 hydraulic maybe even The Next Step Up. I like what one of the Chevrolet fellows commented also the same as you, the cars are not stock. Power to weight ratio and then look at the ET. Doesn't fit. I went back and looked at some of the original times posted from the manufacturers, from some of the more respected magazines. Ford GM and Chrysler all underrated their engines. They all made great vehicles. But when will we get to see an honest all stock run? LOL I don't think we will ever see it on here ha ha ha ha ha
